#Lightdidnothingwrong #Death Note
We return to the next entry in our "Did Nothing Wrong" series, as we take some time to shed some "Light" on Kira, the villain protagonist of the manga/anime series Death Note. When Light Yagami picks up the Death Note, given to him by the shinigami Ryuk, Light embarks on a quest to rid the world of criminals. But if he's killing criminals, does that make him one of them, or is he the god of the new world he's creating?
Thank you all so much for you patience. Video production will resume a more regular schedule, and I hope this video was worth the wait it took.

What else makes Light detestable is he hinted at desires to wipe out the lazy and those who felt didn't contribute enough to the world after he finished with criminals so really as he thinned the line on who should get wiped out it would mean nobody was really safe from what he considered a person not welcome in his perfect world.

Yup, in many ways he resembles the classic fascist leaders from history. Those kinds of people pretend to be the absolute purest when it comes to morals, but they consider their definition of 'morals' to be the only correct one - in other words, they're megalomaniacs.

And? As much of a lazy ass you probably subconsciously think you are, Light wouldn't have lived long enough to off your sort. And this world would be better off if the worst of humanity were offed as fast as their names could be written, regardless of whether it eventually would have killed off those worth preserving, (which is remarkably few people anyway).

@@mikescarlet4261 I’m paraphrasing but Light literally says something like “It’s too early for that” when Kiyomi mentions killing the lazy. That’s a huge hint that Light was already planning to weed out the “undesirable” people after he got rid of all the criminals.

It's been a long time since I've read the manga, but I think I remember reading in the epilogue portion that the Shinigami that tried to recreate what Ryuk did with other humans have said that other humans usually commit su*ic*ide when handling the Death Note, so that it showed Light and Misa were unique mentally to handle it. It's like the Ring of Power or the Necronomicon, an object of importance that few can handle and can corrupt people when misused.

I think people severely downplay the sheer brutality of light's killings. Light could have chosen not to kill the detective who opposed him on TV, ignored him, and kept on killing criminals as is (although that's already extremely fucked up by itself, for reasons I'll give at the end). But no, he deliberately led L all the way to him, just so he could get close and kill L. Why? Because he's an egomaniac who hates to lose. He would freely risk his "perfect world" for a literal power trip, he deliberately used his father's data as a police officer at tthe start so he could bring L to him. (He started killing criminals every hour instead of the evening as soon as he was suspected of being a student to tell L that he had connections to the police.) Hell, he fucking murdered thousands of FBI agents just to "avoid suspicion" he would otherwise garner if he only killed Ray Penber, a guy he never needed to kill anyway, because Ray was going to report Light as innocent. Light killed upstanding citizens to feel like a God, risked his own plans for power trips, and was otherwise a psychopathic maniac who killed people without remorse, and without giving an absolute shit about what people wanted. He literally killed thousands of people each day just because they appeared on TV. Forget fair trials, hell forget even trials, the mother fucker never even spent more than 5 seconds deciding deciding whether someone deserved the death penalty or not. The idea that this classifies as "justice" is so stupid it hurts. He was utterly irredeemable, and a garbage human. Light did absolutely everything wrong.
@chrisdawson1776

I have the feeling the story was deliberately written this way, where Light’s method is "proven wrong" not due to the method itself but stemming from the person's flaws, and not addressing the method at all to avoid anyone getting the wrong message. Because the morale from the story was Light was wrong because he killed innocents (cops and agents sent after him), the implication being he was right if he had not done those things. They did the same thing in American History X where the protagonist states some true albeit offensive things then he attacks someone for no reason for the viewer to dismiss his arguments as crazy ramblings. The anime can't have a version of Light that is morally consistent because it cannot have that conversation, it's an anime. Imagine a Light that did not kill fake L or any agents following him. You could still address the method by the punishment not fitting the crime, punishing the innocent because they seem guilty, etc. Capital punishment, execution already exists in the real world and Light is really no different. They establish him as only killing those who "deserve it", it's a literal plot point as when Higuchi gets the death note people suspect Kira is a different person as he is just killing whoever shows up on TV. The author could have made a deeper statement on morality and capital punishment but he reduced it to an ancient tale of hubris.

@@blackharmonics4518 That's my point, we are led to assume from the anime that all of Light's kills of criminals were justified from a judicial standpoint even if immoral. The anime never addresses the core problem of capital punishment in that there will be people who are innocent but found guilty. They entirely skip fundamental issues with capital punishment and instead pin the evilness on Light on him killing civilians, implication being capital punishment is actually okay if you're only targeting criminals.

I refuse to cut Light slack tbh. I don't like the "the Death Note corrupted him" interpretation. Light has signs of always having been an arrogant sociopath. And he was always a childish coward. The loss of his memory just restored the superego, without absolute power he kept up his good boy persona that formed likely due to regular social pressure.
@alirezaomrani7650

I disagree. I think that the Death Note did indeed corrupt him to an extent. It’s been stated multiple times by both the author and material that has Light never gotten the Death Note he would’ve gone on to become one of the world’s greatest police officers and eventually partnered up with L. During Light’s memory loss period he was completely unable to bring himself to commit any of the deeds that “Kira” would do such as taking advantage of Misa’s feelings or allowing deaths to occur just to come one step closer to finishing an investigation, (in fact he adamantly refused to allow the Yotsuba group to continue killings despite L himself stating that it would be the most effective way of catching them, Hell he even went as far as betting on a 2 out of 7 chance that the person who would not be Kira but also have enough authority among the board to buy them the time they need in order to figure the case out would be intimidated by L, JUST to save those few lives, whose names and faces he’d never have known, that the board would’ve sacrificed. Which L himself even compliments by saying that it’s something he might’ve came up with but was instead orchestrated by Light before even himself) Furthermore it’s been stated by the Author himself that Light was the greatest victim out of all those whom used the Death Note. Though he deserved every bit of what was coming to him, Light Yagami was as much a victim of the Death Note as everybody else we saw die during the series.

@@alirezaomrani7650 in this context i think it’s kinda fair to compare the Death note to the internet in a way. The internet lets you do and say what you want with almost full anonymity and (if you’ve ever seen twitter) many people choose to use that anonymity to be dickheads. The internet itself doesn’t corrupt people because it’s merely a tool and there are people online that aren’t absolutely horrendous. You could say that the dickheads are actually nice in person, but if they’re really nice in person why are they toxic online? Light always had that evil in him, he just couldn’t act upon it. In reality the true evil isn’t the ability to kill, it’s unchecked power.

@@staby3956 Comparing the DN to the internet is an interesting way to see this. But I think it's a bit different tho (and not only because the DN is an unearthly tool brought by a shinigami in an anime). I also believe that the possibility alone could bring out the worst inside of us, like having a deadly murderous tool in our hands and the possibility to change the rules significantly. I bet that every single one of us just wanted to kill somebody for whatever reason, even if we didn't mean it seriously. If we had that tool in the right (or false - just a way of perspective) moment, maybe this low impulse would've grown bigger until the point of no return. But regularly we wouldn't give in. So I think that Light having the possibility to give in to that impulse with the DN just let that impulse grew to an extend where he couldn't control it any longer. If he didn't have that tool, maye he would have overcome this and would reach adulthood like every other regular person. (Or maybe he would've become an insane killer in another way... who knows?) Edit: Surfing through the anonymity of the internet can also bring out our "dickhead" side in a weak and impulsive moment. If we are angry, we often tend to vent our anger through mean words. We don't mean it and we regret saying mean stuff when we are chilled again. So yeah, I get, why you compared the DN to the internet. But it's true that some people just are dickheads in general, even if they play nice in person.

Regarding the possibility of the Death Note corrupting him: I think it did to some degree and we can see this with him returning to being good when he gave up the Death Note and lost his memories. And it’s been stated by the authors that had me not found the Death Note he would have become one of the world’s greatest police officers. At the same time though Ryuk stated that Light was abnormally murderous for someone who finds a Death Note, that most people who find one write one name in it just to see what would happen and immediately become horrified and never use it again.

I don't get why people keep saying that Light was always like this deep down inside when the author has stated what his life would've been like without the Death Note. It feels like people are just nihilists and can't comprehend that good people are objectively good IF they never run into a corrupting force at the time of their life where they're susceptible to it. No one is perfect, saints don't exist, no one is born evil. Bullshit.

Possibly yeah, him doing so well in academics and such might have given him a big head - even if he wasn't aware of it. It's not easy to remain humble. Even saying you're humble is an act of uh, not being very humble about it. I guess the truly virtuous person would have picked up the notebook and either destroyed it or kept it around until the shinigami came to pick it up. Using it in any way would be wrong, but then again if you look at it from a nihilistic point of view, right and wrong cannot be quantified.

I disagree strongly with “Absolute power corrupts absolutely”. It has a similar theme to the statistics phrase: “correlation but not causation”. Is it true that often times having unchecked power leads to the worst time of people? Yes. But there have been those who have turned down similar power; one example being George Washington who implicitly turned down the offer to become King after the Revolutionary War (he wasn’t technically offered it, but was suggested that there should be a strong executive called “King” that would rule the new nation under military authority; by vehemently refusing such an idea he was indirectly removing himself from the opportunity (he also had considerable influence at the time)). In other words, if someone has strong, virtuous ideals the temptation can be resisted. Having unlimited power in itself will not corrupt someone. In my opinion, it only reveals who you truly are. I full-heartedly agree with the adage that “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” So then, what person do you really think you are? Would you be any better, morally, than Kira?

I think you're severely downplaying the sheer brutality of light's killings. The idea that Light's God complex was a post-hoc rationalization is fucking comical, considering how he blatantly kills people he doesn't need to just for an ego ride. His intentions of jerking off to his ego cause his murderous actions, not the other way around. This is literally seen practically all throughout the death note, right from the get go. Light could have chosen not to kill the detective who opposed him on TV, ignored him, and kept on killing criminals as is (although that's already extremely fucked up by itself, for reasons I'll give if you ask me to, but not including to keep the comment short). @OP Power can corrupt us in our weakest moments. People are different. There may be the ones like Washington who can turn down such temptations, but I guess, even he thought about it for a moment. We are impulsive / emotional creatures. Having a deadly tool in a weak / deeply angry moment could lead to a "crime in passion" and in some cases corrupt a person completly. Some would give in, some are strong enough to resist the urge. But those who gave in don't need to be "evil" on standard. Well... Giving in multiple times (or hundreds of thousand of times like in Lights case) aren't a good sign either... lol. There are multiple outcomes to a "what if Light didn't pick up / use the DN" scenario.

The question of if someone does something wrong has to boil down to their actions in the context of their situation. I find an argument oriented around his worldview to be uncompelling. He's egotistical, but he has every reason to be as such: he's brilliant for his age, he's effortlessly capable as an athlete, girls highly desire him, he's from a good family, he was handed the power over death itself, and his only confidants as Kira believe in what he is doing (or at least tacitly support it for fun in the case of Ryuk). Of course he's going to prioritize himself over his purported ideals, almost anyone would. People who want to tear Kira down risk taking away whatever benefits came from Kira's activities, therefore represent not only a threat to Light as an individual, but his entire new social order and religion, he hates them for the same reason that governments make treason a capital offense (even if they were born from treason, as is the case with the United States). I can't say that mentality is wrong. As to his actions, his killings were not calculated to efficiently bring about the world as he wanted it. There are clearly ways he could have gone about things better, and that difference is measured in lives lost. Light is very intelligent, but his priorities are definitely scrambled at times, which results in people who didn't deserve to die occasionally dying. While the stakes of mistakes are high, I don't think the perfect ought to be the enemy of the good. If total societal reform is the goal, there has to be some room for error, which can excuse some deaths resulting from misplaced priorities or of some people who didn't truly deserve to die. The question then becomes would the juice have been worth the squeeze - did Light at least have a reason to think that his society would actually be better than the current one? Light isn't given a whole lot of reason to distrust the authorities and their ability to bring criminals to justice. There is a lack of a personal motivation to commit vigilante acts, it's mostly an accident of circumstance that led him to have the power to do something. That "something" quickly escalated from experimentation with the notebook on subjects no one would miss to play God. His direction was more influenced by a domino effect rather than a grand vision from the outset. Ironically, he had more personal motivation early on (actual disgust for criminal acts as opposed to viewing them as props in his mental chess game), so the experimental deaths at the start of the series are more justified in one sense and less in another. The whole "god of the new world" thing was essentially a post-hoc rationalization to justify the crimes he had committed out of curiosity. But this post hoc rationalization would present a deterrent effect on crime, therefore minimize suffering except to the extent that people suffer if they commit crimes and have to fear Kira's wrath. It's not too far removed from how the government takes years away from people's lives and denies them future economic opportunities to discourage crimes. I think regardless of if Kira would be an effective deterrent, Light had enough justification to believe that it could have been although the situation prior to the show's events is not dire enough to necessitate a Kira. It could also be that once Kira would die, there'd be total chaos if he couldn't find an effective replacement, so I don't think the consequences of Kira were adequately considered by Light. So I wouldn't say Light did nothing wrong, but I would say what he did wrong was acceptably proportionate to his goals and to the fact that he's a human.

I'm still not over the fact that there are some sick-minded people who actually side with Light's character. The bastard was just a power hungry, egotistical person who was presenting himself as a god. He wasn't killing criminals to help others, he was doing it to clarify his image as a god. I say, why'd he kill the guy on T.V in the first place when L was onto him. He didn't know the guy was a criminal yet he still killed him just because he wanted to get rid of the only person who could put a stop to his horrific acts. Light was a selfish psycho who would eradicate anyone who gets in his way of doing things even if they haven't done anything wrong. The detective and his fiance whom Light killed in the starting episodes, and many other innocent police officers. He killed L, laughs like a maniac everytime he kills a person who he seems to consider as an "obstacle" in his way of becoming a "god" saying that "I've won" like killing people is like a game to him. Anyone who supports Light's character has some really weak ass morals. Once again, the bastard was just an egotistical maniac and a dictator sort of guy who hated to lose and would kill anyone who gets in his way of doing things.

Ah Light, one of my favorite garbage people character. Gotta say that I agree with what seems to be the general sentiment in these comments in that I don't think the Death Note corrupted Light exactly. And I'll never consider Kira to be some different personality. At the end of the day, it's still just Light who got the 'right' outlet through which he could 1. Escape his daily boredom and 2. Create a perfect, just world. What I've always found interesting about him as a character is this great mix and even paradox of a selfish yet very selfless desire. His need to get out of routine and his egocentric self drove the mantle of Kira just as much as his wish to see what he considers to be a better world. Which ultimately plays why he and L are such great foils. L himself is driven by the challenge, the puzzle, the stimulation and he is much less of an upstanding guy that most viewers consider him to be. He's obviously not a mass murderer but I think this cynycal situation, of these two guys having all this power and talking about values and what is good while battling each other in what is basically a dick measuring contest reflects how things tend to be run in real life.

From the start, its pretty obvious lights attention from the L Taylor scene,he could of simply from the start not killed him, he did but for what reason I ask you Not for power,somewhat for his ego, but the main thing that’s definitely not justices is simple He was bored,you can see how disappointed he was when the first person challenged him dies in a instance, but when L gets to talking he gets excited as all can be The justices was the first layer,ego was the second but at the core of it all,boredom made Kira Ryuks basically represents all the thoughts and feelings lights have but more upfront about things, he’s the pure outlet of light Boredom, light could of chilled in his room like ryuk could of chilled in the shingami realm, but they both wanted more I don’t think the death note really corrupted him more of gave him another option,before he could of been the basics shingami like ryuk that just lived life normally But the second he got the death note his cards were in a game that awaken something more in him then pure justices ever could,there was no morality in the center of the game

Something that not a lot of people doesn't mention is that Epilogue chapter in the manga after Light loses. In Epilogue, it was clear that everything went back to as it was, criminals and crime returned. Obviously Lights crime affected the world in many ways, but no matter how many criminals you give heart attacks to, you will always be fighting a losing battle because crime will always exist and it will return no matter. If light truly cares about protecting the innocent and decreasing crime rates, he could've used the death note on corrupt politicians and used them to change laws and government to create a better world that would force less people to commit crime. I don't know, what do you think?

3:07 Yeah,ı am glad they removed that line in the anime. Since its makes Near a hypocrite,because himself is aware that removing Light will eventually start a domino affect that cost extreme chaos at global scale. Season 2 shoudnt exist. Do not look at me 12:47 And that to,ım glad they also removed that. Since it makes things more interesting for Light. Let me explain: Sure,it makes him look smarter. But cmon. İt removes the very important question of "Will you sacrifice your afterlife for your dream?". Since at that moment,Light did not killed anyone innocent yet. And still can rid of his ownership of the book. He still can walk away. And he choose not to. This shows how far Light willing to go to even before he goes full physco mod.

I'm surprised this video has so few views compared to your other ones! I pretty much agree with your view on Light. What you mentioned about the author wanting to focus on the chess game, I do think that was the only way to keep the series entertaining. I hope one day to see a spin-off or re-imagining that more explores the associated philosophical questions, though it doesn't have to be Death Note in particular, it could be any god-power story. That being said, have you seen ""? The main character Rimuru is set up to be one of the most powerful beings in his world, and he makes use of his powers to build a society for monsters. His actions can be framed as "for the greater good" but I wonder if that holds true as the story goes on. Anyway, if you haven't seen/read it, I think you'd like it.

My biggest complaint with the anime is we never see what a pitiful little man Light is. In the manga, when Light learns that Ryuk put his name in the notebook, he actually begs for his life and shouts “I DON’T WANT TO DIE!” until he actually does die. The so-called “God of the New World” actually begged for his life like a whimpering dog. And do you think any of his victims wanted to die? In the anime, he actually dies peacefully of a heart attack, and accepts his fate. I wanted to see him beg for his life like the coward he was.

I feel like it's really interesting to compare Light Yagami with Emiya Kiritsugu from Fate/Zero, because they're so similar, yet such opposites. They're nearly Identical at surface level, they are both relentless killers who target bad people, and will even kill civilians if they think it's necessary, all in favor of 'justice' and their ultimate goal of an ideal world. However, Kiritsugu's methods are for more extreme, while light will sometimes target civilians, he'll rarely kill someone who doesn't oppose him, while Kiritsugu will sacrifice as many innocents as necessary for 'the greater good'. But I feel like their biggest difference, is that Kiritsugu is what Light 'pretends' to be. While Light's ideals are just a mask to hide his real reasons, which are his ego and God complex, Kiritsugu genuinely believes in his ideals, everything he does, is for the sake of a better world. While Light places his ego above his 'perfect world', Kiritsugu sacrifices himself for the sake of his ideals. (Sorry, I know it must look stupid, the guy with the Fate pfp writing an essay about a Fate character in a death note video. But I just think it's interesting to compare characters who are so similar at their surface, yet so different at their core, and I think Kiritsugu would also be a good candidate for a 'did nothing wrong' video.)

I am still firmly in the "Light is a hero" view. He had to commit evil in order to vanquish evil, yes - largely in self-preservation. But in a way it's a noble sacrifice, to become evil to end evil. Much like Lelouch vi Britannia. his most questionable kills or outright immoral ones were all to preserve himself...which is a necessary evil in order to maintain "Kira"'s existence. The only true flaw is the lack of forethought on what you do after you're gone. Society would eventually fall back to how it was when they realise Kira is wrong. So in short, ultimately Kira should not only continue as before, but also begin creating a successor, a system of some sort in order to maintain the standards of kira. It could be prone to failure, but if the Watari orphanage can do basically the same thing with L mentality, Kira can too. At the end of the day, the world WAS becoming a better place thanks to Kira. There's nothing inherently wrong with capital punishment, but the real trouble with kira is his standards for WHO should die. Because he typically uses the news, he tends to go after people from the accusation or charge stage, rather than focus on those actually convicted. He also has rather low standards for what constitutes a death-worthy punishment. But, nevertheless, the general ideal is something I'd say is worthy of respect at least. That said, if I had to choose between Lelouch and Light as the one most worthy of respect when both commit evil to eliminate evil, I'd have to go with Lelouch over Light, merely because Light severely lacks forethought, and his ego meant that he wasn't truly making use of it in the best way possible. His desire to make an "entity" by using the same MO to kill is foolish and folly; if justice were the greatest concern, then he could have had a more interesting MO like forcing people to confess their sins before death. Rather than mere abstractions of punishment, the fear of absolute exposure could have done so much more. I mean, I say he's a hero, but that doesn't mean I think he did nothing wrong. I merely see his general aspirations as admirable, and he merely botched the execution.

He did do wrong things. That's a fact. Did he also do good? Yes. That's what you get with anyone. Everyone does good things and bad things. The question is did you get more good than bad. With Light, yes, the 70% reduction in crimes and stopping of wars does so much good that it outweighs everything bad he did. Yes, he is evil. The results of his actions are not.

Great video. But the real question which you did not answer nor attempt to answer is whether using the death note on criminals is wrong. Furthermore, you mentioned that people who opposed Kira were at the bottom of the totem pole. But Light didn’t really care whether or not people disagreed with his ideology. I disagree that power brings corruption. Power just brings out things that were hidden and sealed. These bad sides and characteristics were hidden and sealed is because it is disadvantage to indulge in it, they were of lower priority. But with absolute power those things no longer need to be hidden or sealed and when they surfaced they were seen as corruption. Though I cannot truly deny that power brings corruption. As with power you are faced with more temptations, your perspective of things become more broad and you get to know more things. Perhaps it is more appropriate to say that absolute knowledge corrupts absolutely.

As a Non-Christian death note fan myself, your comment is miss the mark really bad. Those religous symbolizms are just there,due to do art direction. I do beleive the main theme is like "Would you sacrifice your freedom for a safer world?". Light is stands there as the yes. He ended %70 of global crimes. And this is why its makes him so hard to argue. He gives the results. L and Others are stands there for "no". Since Kira start to act to out of control. Killed many innocent people And actually planned to kill lazy people.
