@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy literally just finished my 5th variation of the same photo and without using imag-r and just tweaking the contrast, brightness, gamma, and sharpen in lightburn it came out great on newsprint. I couldn't agree more. Lightburn does, IMO, a much better job of processing photos for burning. It took a lot of hours, a lot of material and a lot of failures to finally figure out the processing because I listened to too many "experts" in the beginning. I was never happy with the results from Imag-R even though everyone raved about it but once I trained my eye to see the adjustments, I've not had a bad photo result since.

It seems every time I try to do a different project. That burn spot doesn't work. I've made a template, but after I use it once, the spots where I laser have changed. Thanks!

I feel the same way about engraving photos using a laser, I'm not a fan of it. I do love B&W photography though. Not to say that there isn't a need or reason why anyone would do it. I haven't explored the possibility of engraving a photo yet but if I did I would likely use Photoshop only because I've been using that software for 24 years, and I'm very comfortable using it. If someone were to ask me if they needed to use outside software I would tell them no and send them your video :) Hope you are recovering well from being sick and had a wonderful Christmas!

Take care of yourself. As with any virus, drink lots of liquids, keep your system 'flushed' but hydrated. Regarding burning images, if your system can do grayscale, that is what should be used. You should 'profile' the material to find the power / speed combination that gives you the first full black (max power) and just barely noticeable burn (min power) for the same speed and set your power levels and speed accordingly. Remember to run your profile at max power = 100% and min power = 0. Determining the correct endpoints will give you the greatest grayscale for that material. If you are doing wood, the direction of the grain can also influence the results; try burning horizontal, vertical and diagonal to see what works best for that material. It looks like a lot of work, but it is worth figuring out what works best for each specific material for YOUR machine. Once that is determined, burns become almost mindless, no brightness, contrast, gamma or other settings to fool with unless you want to alter the image.
@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy
@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy 2 года назад
Yeah, I've done all that Edward, and I have never gotten good results with grayscale except on dark wood. I do practice what I preach! 🤪

@jerseybigmike2619 Год назад
Rich, I have to disagree with your conclusion. Lightburn did a good j ob with the image but lmag-r did do imho a slightly better job. This is noticeable mostly in the background detail in the imag-r version. The lightburn version acted like the bokeh was changed on the photo and detail was lost. In the end it come dopwn to what you are trying to accomplish in the burn. You may well be able to spend a bit more time in lightburn and match the results closer. A very interesting example and comparision and should be very helpful to most laser users! Well done as usual.

Thanks Mike, but this was just a quick demonstration. Imag-r is just a script, Lightburn gives you full control over every aspect of the tuning of the photo.

Likely a power issue. You have to run test grids to get your speeds and power Gerard.

Hey rich, love your videos. Just wanted to add that if you're using the free version of imag-r it couldn't possible compare. Lightburn would win everytime. I tried the free version about a year ago and didn't see the value at all! However, if you used the paid version, running an image with something the kasia algorithm is a game changer. I used to have such a hard time with photos and I was skeptical of using another paid subscription but they do have a lifetime license available. I would love to see you do a comparison of the paid version. It's $8 a month or $24 for 6 months. I'm not an affiliate btw.

I agree with you Rich, I not a fan of subscription software, Lightburn has this correct if you ask me. You buy Lightburn and it is ours if after a year you want the updates it is $30.00 for another year of updates. I did purchase imag-R for $33.15 with a 15% discount from lasernoob the subscription is for one year, I bought it a few hours ago and so far the jury is out. I think that it takes a lot of practice and be sure to document what you did and run test to get the results one is looking for. 🤯🛫

Some of my wood sheets are curling /bowing a bit. So i have to raise the lazer a mm or two to prevent it from knocking the sheet out of position. Any tips? I have plans on building a platform that i can anchor the corners to but waiting on the new frame.
@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy
@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy 2 года назад
Yes, store them in a bag with a weight on top otherwise they will bow out. To use bowed pieces, you need to have a honeycomb bed with hold down pins. Or you can use a metal bed with magnets. All wood warps with the humidity.

Unless it looks different in person, the imagr is the better pic. I work in the printing industry. But that being said, you could of spent another 10 seconds in lightburn and made it better than the imagr version.

I’m having trouble doing a badge for a police officer. I am doing the badge on a bottle opener and I had to make it 3/4 of an inch round to fit. It comes out kinda blurry and none of the words show up. I’m new to the image game but I’m not sure if it’s me trying too small of an image or just not tracing it well.
@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy

It could be a combination of both Ryan. I find police badges don't engrave well under 3" or so. Start with a really high resolution photo, that might help.

But none of your tests make use of the variable power of a diode laser. you just burn 85% or nothing. Have you tried using variable power and dispensing entirely with conversion to mono pattern algorithms ? I've found I get far better results by making full use of the dynamic range my laser is capable of. This is true even with slate, where I can achieve around 4-5 different shades.

@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy but isn't the point to show which ends up best on the wood after laser engraving? That seems like the real test, right? It can look great on the computer but if it doesn't look good printing, what's it matter, and vice versa. Just my 2 cents. Sorry to offend.
