Lightening (or removing dye) with Vitamin C and Shampoo

Please do not leave this product on your hair for more than an hour (actually, I'd go so far to say to not leave it on for more than 45 minutes). I've noticed over the few times that I've used this method to lighten my hair that it works best with removing dyed hair and will only lift your natural hair by maybe half a level. I've also noticed that after the 45 minute mark that the Vitamin C no longer lifts/lightens your hair color. Do understand that Vitamin C can make your hair feel straw-like if you leave it on for too long, as well as make you feel sick, and even burn your scalp. Always err on the side of caution!!! If your scalp is burning at all during this process, WASH IT OUT. Thank you, all, for your love and support.
Vitamin C and Shampoo Recipe
Ingredients:
50-60 pills of 1000mg Vitamin C, mashed into powder.
9ish Tablespoons of clear shampoo (I used Prell but it's probably best to use a shampoo without dyes in it)
Mixing bowl
A spray bottle, filled with water
A plastic cap, or bag
Instructions:
Mix vitamin C and shampoo
If you feel the mixture is too thick, add another tablespoon of shampoo.
Apply to damp hair.
If mixture isn't spreading easily and/or you've run out of mixture, spray more water onto hair and continue to lather in.
Once hair is saturated with the mixture, cover with a plastic cap (or bag) and leave for 30-60 minutes.
Rinse out, wash with shampoo, and deep condition as this will make your hair dry.

This video helped me so much!! My hairdresser messed up and coloured my platinum blond hair dark purple because i said i want it more grayish and she missunderstood and dyied it so dark, there was no sign of blonde anymore and i came home and cried for hours, then i started searching in youtube what to do, at one point i wanted to bleach it, then after this video i decided to try this and IT TOTALLY WORKS! I used lemon, baking soda and clear shampoo, left it for about 70 minutes and it took out almost everything and now i am back to blonde and never been more happier about having blonde hair! Thanks for this helpful video 💇🏼

Hey girl! I can not believe in what similar situation we are.. I was also very very blonde and I wanted it more ash toned and more dimension in it as well.. My hairdresser put in some low lights that would be very subtle and ash toned. When she started blow drying my hair the color came out very very wrong. The low lights are so dark (almost black) and the tone of it just doesn't look healthy and natural at all. It looked so chemical and almost metal like. It just wasn't right. I am trying these methods out as well. You just gave me so much hope that my hair is gonna be fine haha! I cried as well and I just felt so stupid that I was crying over a bunch of hair, but still it is MY hair and I just couldn't believe someone just messed it up like that.. I am so happy to hear that you could fix it! It gives me hope!

Thank you thank you @Ladee from your newest UK fan. I have been box dying my hair black for more years than I dare to remember, like many during lockdown I decided to give my hair a well earned rest and take the opportunity to grow the dye out as much as possible. 1 year later I am almost totally grey on top with black growing out. I tried your method today for the 1st time not expecting much. But wow! A lot of the black is now dark brown and I am going to do it a couple more times over the next week . I used my usual Tresemme shampoo about 6 big table spoons with 50 crushed vit c tablets and there was plenty left over - my hair is about your length - left on for 45 mins and can't believe the difference! Thanks again!

Thanks for this video! I touched up my ginger roots with a shade that was much too red. I made a diluted version of this recipe, about 6 vitamin c tabs blended up, mixed with a little hot water and about a half cup of clear shampoo. Let that sit on my head for around 35 minutes. It lifted most of the too red tones out of my hair. My hair isn't perfect now (although a LOT better!) but I didn't want to over-do it.

YAY!! This makes me soooo happy to hear! It's best to get as much concentrated Vitamin C and a good stripping shampoo to make this work. Did you use Prell as well, or a different shampoo? One theory I was told was that the possible reason my hair lightened so well was because of the Prell.

WOW! Thank you for posting this! I had what I will call a salon FUBAR done yesterday by my hairdresser who misunderstood that when I said I wanted to go back to my ginger “roots” after being a highlighted blonde for 10 years..I figured letting my ginger hair just be free but rather than transition slowly, I wanted her to dye it ginger reddish..what happened was she put too dark of a “copper” and told me that it would lighten up after the initial shock of seeing a burgundy fake looking redhead staring back at me in the mirror... Went home to my 2young sons who both ran away from me giggling and play hiding on me:( although they were just playing I thought that was my initial reaction when I looked at that awful fake looking red! I found your video right off the bat and had vitamin c and my kiddos shampoo and immediately followed your steps and application and got the ginger hair I have been wanting! I use this method quite often. I do it a few days before I plan to bleach my regrowth and want to get the demi dye out, or if I plan to tone my hair a different color. I use 20-30 tablets and 1/4 cup cheap shampoo. I accidentally found a new method that strips hair color pretty good as well. I use 2 cups of epsom salt, fill the tub with the warm water, and soak for 30-60 mins. I don’t even have to be completely submerged for it to work. I just re-wet my hair by dunking my entire scalp under the water once every 5-10 mins then sit back up. This will remove hair dye that even had ammonia in it (which drives color deeper into the hair shaft). I colored my hair with medium brown L’Oréal hair dye and hated it. Well I took a bath in the way I mentioned above and actually got my hair wet this time, and it faded dramatically. It is a slower process (I say 5 baths equal the same results as 1 vitamin c remover session), but it does work if you’re just trying to remove a little bit of pigment at a time. It’s great if you overall like your new color, but just want it a tad bit lighter. I always wash my hair with my regular shampoo & conditioner then rinse with fresh water afterwards. It is far less drying than the vitamin c method if severe hair dryness is an issue anyone is dealing with.

Unfortunately, I go grey mostly on top and have my natural colour through the sides and back ao the majority of my hair dye is on top and a bit darker than my natural colour. But this process brought my natural colour back, in the back and it did lighten the colour on top. So tomorrow I'm going to go ahead and strip just the top where the hair dye remains. I should've done a better job of crushing the tablets, and I only ended up leaving it on for 35-40 minutes because the mixture was stinging my scalp, but it still lifted the color 1-2 shades (I mixed it with a peppermint and tea tree oil clarifying shampoo, which I had a sample bottle of). I used a deep conditioning mask afterward, which I highly recommend.

I have dark brunette hair naturally and wanted to lighten it for the summer, so I tried a honey/oil/cinnamon DIY treatment followed by two days of Sun Bum and sitting in the sunshine for an hour or two. My hair has natural red undertones and turned a bright golden-reddish orange and not the desired carmel/copper highlights I was hoping for. So I dyed over it with semi-permanent light brown dye, hoping it would still be lighter but without the orange-ness. However, since it was a lighter color dye than I normally use, I was afraid it wouldn't do anything if I didn't leave it in for a long time, so I left it in for twice as long as it called for on the box. The result was a very dark brown/auburn. I felt so defeated. So, I came across this video in desperation to help my situation, and IT WORKED!!! I am so so happy with the results! It not only lifted the dark color out of my hair, but my hair also stayed a nice golden-brown with natural-appearing golden/copper highlights. No orange or red hues. It was perfect. Thank you so much for this video! I used your recipe exactly except I couldn't find the crushable Vitamin C tablets in 1000mg, only 500mg. So I used a few more, I think like 80 tablets. And I used Head and Shoulders shampoo and left it in for 40 minutes. After rinsing it all out (it made my hair very dry!), I used the Head and Shoulders shampoo one more time, and then a deep argan oil conditioner. I put a deep moisturizing hair mask on my hair and left it in for 1 hour, then used leave-in conditioner spray after rinsing out the mask. My hair was the perfect color and felt soft, hydrated, and healthy after all of that. Thank you again for your video!!

I've been using this method for over a year to remove temporary colors and it works so well (I'm currently removing a temporary dark purple and blue) but I only use 10-15 tablets in one sitting. I noticed that helps make it a more gentle process. I could see why that many tablets would dry your hair out.

WOW! this is amazing!...just tried it and i am 100% happy with the results- my dark brown hair is mostly gray and although i love the gray and g-d blessed me with a nice head of hair... i started adding blonde to it about a year ago, had it done by a professional and it set me back 200.00 so after a few months i said - "dude try it yourself!' 8.99 loreal preference and had great results, felt 15 years younger... yesterday i went to get color and thought dude its winter i can go a shade darker than the color i hade been using- natural blonde...so duh...tried champagne blond, thinking it would be a grayish blonde ~ hello it was a pink blonde i was freaking out last night and i was sure i was going to have to bleach it ASAP... not sure i wanted to torture my hair so soon after adding color... i hesitated and caught your video and was amazed at how great your hair looked after trying this really simple process... i went an bought vitamin C tabs... seriously at the dollar store- since i was not 100% sure if this would work ~ i already had the head and shoulders 2 in one shampoo and conditioner, and as a back up i bought the box 'natural blonde' in case i needed it... followed your steps- piece of cake, but i used a mortar and pestle to break up the 500mg tabs they did not have 1000 mgs at the dollar store... so i used 20 tabs and left it on for 40 mins... and it took 85% of that weird pink tint and brought me back to a golden blonde- this is amazing i wish i had known about it years ago... i will live with my golden blonde for a few weeks before i try to lighten it up again... i have the MOST AMAZING Keratin conditioner it is called KASHMIR i dated a hairdresser and he turned me on to this brand now i buy it on eBay its from Isreal and it will turn straw into silk in one use... they make an entire line i bought the Deep conditioner which i use every few days if i feel i am super dry... and they also have a leave in damp serum that is what sold me on the brand years ago- it smells awesome and makes my wavy hair lay smooth and shiny like i had it done at a salon and that i use when i want to look like a natural blonde since it gives you shine and hair that looks like a million dollars- the line is not cheap but you use such a small amount each time i can easily get it to last a year... with my hair length to my shirt collar- obvioulsy women will use more with longer hair but its worth every penny!..turned my 2 daughters on to it years ago as well and they are always asking me to buy them more.... THANK YOU for your excellent video- and i agree anxiousness and hair go together if you are a hair person you don't like messing with it ~ if you are unsure of the results..this was the best RU-vid video i have seen in a while- YOU SAVED THE DAY....

Had hot pink hair once when it wasn’t cool. Used straight green Prell on dry hair. Left it for a while, rinse and repeat shampoo. I think the Prell is the thing that works. YES it dries your hair! But a good five minute conditioner left on for ten or 15 pretty well takes care.

I've used this method for years with great results always leaving my hair infused with vitamins and feeling soft. Used to bleach and dye my hair almost every week or two for a few years! 1 Tablespoon of crushed vitamin C tablet powder one table spoon of Johnson baby shampoo and one table spoon of L'Oreal conditioner. Leave on your hair for about 30 minutes then use your bleach if you want to get it an lighter tone because the vitamin C method doesn't totally strip out the color but it is important to do before you bleach since it will infuse your hair with the vitamins and you will be left with very soft and healthy hair with minimal risk of your hair ever falling out when going to bleach it to lighten your hair enough for other dyes👍🏻

I meant to dye my hair red (like ginger) and I’ve dyed it the same colour multiple times but this time I used a different brand. I dye it, dry it, and it’s a dark brown-red. And on the box it has what colour it’ll turn out depending on your current hair colour. And I look at it and I’m like “cool okay it should turn out ginger enough that I’ll be satisfied with it until I get another colour” and I cry my hair and stuff and it’s so fucking dark it’s ridiculous. I’ve dyed my hair black in the past and told myself I’d never go dark again.

The reason I used Prell is because it's a really good, tried and true stripping shampoo. I washed my hair again today and did another deep condition on my ends and the green-ish cast on my ends are gone.

Your hair turned out great. Thanks for the tips. I'm planning on trying this very soon to try to break loose some Demi color that has gotten stuck in the back of my hair for months now. I'm trying to transition to natural gray, and been using Demi for the grow out process, but lol now it's stuck in there and so far nothing has worked to remove it. I come back and update after I try it.

Samantha Lueck hey I have a question. Does this lighten the dye or does it help you come nearer to your natural colour? I have naturally dark brown hair and I dyed it red. If I use this method, will it just make my hair lighter or help me get back my dark brown hair?
@sunfyrewoman
@sunfyrewoman 7 лет назад
i would be cautious and wait to do any more lightening or coloring. bleaching over the green could go terribly wrong. maybe just do the ends again with the Vit C mix but use a Clear shampoo? should be able to get some at any Dollar General type store, then let your hair rest and do some deep conditioning treatments. wait as long as you can to recolor and lighten. these are just suggestions tho based on how i feel about my hair, id be afraid to do to much to it, but you of course have different tolerances than i do. i dyed my hair last summer with Feria Intense copper and haven't touched it since! LOL

Good idea! I may relighten with the Vit C and a dye-free shampoo. I think at this moment I feel more comfortable with that than use bleach. Thank you!

Ok I tryed this BECAUSE. ..I'm going grey with yes permanent hair color now I used vitamin c with a clear shampoo because. ..my grey hair is 5 month in transition so....It does work I think I would do this maybe once a week for those who are growing out their grey hair . It was mostly at the ends but it lifted off the color a bit....So thank you for this idea :) one more thing I only left it in for about 30 minutes cuz I didn't want to mess up my new grey hair coming in.

You can buy shea butter. Apply it to dry hair. Rub it in your palms to warm first. I do it before bed. It's amazing. Sometimes I blend mine with coconut oil. I also use shea butter as a moisturizer for the skin. It's a little greasy as most butters are so you only need a tiny bit. It has an earthy smell so I use it before bed then shower in the morning.

Your hair is a really pretty color! Your ends are most likely that "greenish" color because of the color of your shampoo. Also, if you do this technique again, it's important that you REALLY lather up your the shampoo...I think that's why the Head & Shoulders works SO well. It's white & it lathers up easily & fast!!😃👍

This did a great job! I would caution using gloves otherwise the dye coming out can color your hands (I"m sure it cautioned you in the video). It really got the build up of red out of my hair and now I feel when I recolor it - it will be more the shade I prefer. Without using a damaging bleach or peroxide process to fix it. I wish I could add my before and after pics of my hair so you would believe me! lol

"Vitamin C" Color removal can be done HOWEVER, the best results are obtained by using PURE Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid Crystals) which can be found at most Health Food or Vitamin Stores - Using the tablets is not the best way because they contain ingredients that inhibit removal ( Buffers, Colorant, Flavor, Sweetener, Filler, Binders). And here is my own recipe: 1 Bottle Pure Vitamin C Crystals, 1 Box Baking Soda, 1 Bottle PRELL® Shampoo, Deep Conditioner (You could get Cold Pressed Wheat Germ Oil from the Health Food / Vitamin Store - it is loaded with Antioxidants and natural lipids - Add a 1/2 Tsp. to 1 Oz. Conditioner) Here's how you do it: First, heat 2 cups of clean water to boiling and add 2 Tablespoons Baking Soda, stir and let cool to lukewarm, pour this mixture over hair to thoroughly saturate it. Work through for about 2 mins. then rinse lightly with warm water, towel blot until just damp. Add two tablespoons Vitamin C Crystals to 6 oz. warm water in plastic bottle and shake until dissolved. Starting at the ends (Or wherever hair is darkest) apply Vitamin C mixture and work in with fingers (Make more mixture is there is not enough), continue until all hair is dripping wet with mixture, Cover head with a plastic bag or cap and wait 10 to 20 mins. remove plastic and rinse hair with hot water for 2 to 3 mins. and check color if enough color has been removed, wash hair with PRELL 2 to 3 times to remove ALL residues. IMPORTANT: Washing removes the dissolved dye, if you don't wash and rinse well the dyes may reform and the hair will re-darken. If enough dye was not removed, apply a fresh Vitamin C mixture apply cap and time again (Baking Soda Mix Not Needed) if second application does not remove dye you will need professional type dye remover. Wash hair well and apply deep conditioner.

Hello, I'm trying the basic vitamin C and shampoo method to remove my natural hair color (not dye). I saw in another youtube video that it would work, but I'm not sure yet. Do you know if your recipe works for natural hair color? And thank you for sharing it.
@jimbearone
@jimbearone 6 лет назад
Unfortunately NO, Melanin, the natural color in your hair is not affected by Vitamin C it is formed in a different way than Oxidative Dye and is completely different chemically. The best and safest way to remove natural haircolor is with Oil Bleach, Activator / Protonator Packets and 20 Vol. Creme Developer and Olaplex (or other Bleach additive) to protect hair fibers. You can apply warmed virgin Coconut Oil to hair and cover with plastic for 30 mins. to overnight and apply bleach mixture directly over the oil to provide more conditioning and protection. Try CLAIROL® 7th Stage and 2 Activator packets (3 Packets if hair is medium Brown or darker) and 4 Oz. Creme Developer or L'OREAL Super Blue and 4 oz. Creme Developer you can get either at SALLY or other beauty supplies or Online.

I know this is an older video but I thought I’d take a shot. How long after doing this should I wait to do it again? I dyed my hair too dark on Tuesday, washed it with clarifying shampoo Wednesday and then added the vitamin c Thursday (today) I was scared and only left it in for about 40mins. It only lifted about 1/2 a shade to a shade and I’d like it lighter still. I appreciate any advice 😊

Ladee, I love your videos! I have become a subscriber and hope to dye my hair conservative red at some stage. (It has to be conservative for work). Some things I found when trying this: I did this 3 times and love the way my hair lightened, bringing it to a dark ginger brown from way too dark box dye (John Frieda 5N, which is what I thought my natural color was). I have fine hair, and I know that. My stylist always says I have a lot of it, even though it is fine. I used about 50 500mg tablets of vitamin C in Head and Shoulders shampoo. #1. My ponytail used to be the size of a quarter in diameter and now it is the size of a dime in diameter. When I touch the top of my head it feels like there is hardly any hair there anymore. #2. I can see via my part lines how wide they are and weren't that way before. #3. The baby hair in my 'high temple' area has now gone away or snapped off about 1" from the roots. #4. I got irritated skin to the point of scabbing on the top of my ear as well as behind my ear. My glasses hurt to wear for the first day or so after I finished. #5. The mixture was paste-y when I put it on. I left it on for an hour the first time I did it and washed it out in the sink. When I applied a conditioner to it the conditioner would start to foam up like it was shampoo. I thought I grabbed shampoo by mistake. :) I rinsed that and used another conditioner. Same thing. It took 5-6 attempts of conditioning/rinsing before the conditioner stopped lathering. That really surprised me! I guess my hair held the shampoo even though the first time I rinsed it was for 5 minutes. #6. The last time I did this, I added about a teaspoonful of conditioner, hoping it wasn't so drying. That did help. I am thrilled with the color I now have. I am surprised at the amount of hair loss. Ladee, I notice how thick your hair is. Maybe mine was just too fine to use this technique to lighten my hair?
