To keep with the theme of my tornadoes, hurricanes and blizzards "best of" videos, I've decided to put one together showcasing my best lightning video. This video features my best standard definition lightning shots covering the years 1999-2007. Enjoy!

Actually that was rain falling past the lights of our hotel. That footage I shot on July 5th, 2002 in Myrtle Beach, SC. It does look like snow though lol. Thanks for watching!

Yes you are correct, I did take a risk by filming on the beach. I was underneath an overhang so I was somewhat protected, but I certainly do NOT recommend doing what I did. I am an extreme weather photographer so certain risks I have to take. Thanks for watching!

Well, in Belgium you need to be 18 to drive a car...and today it was 30 degrees Celsius (86 °F) and tonight 20 °C (68°F), but no thunderstorm today. It will pass my window tomorrow evening :D Best of luck with catching some nice footage!

Soon enough you'll be able to chase if you want. When I was 16 I filmed all the storms from my front porch haha. Keep an eye out later today, could be some big storms around.

what setting did you have that one to get the night lightning storms at 2:30 with out seeing a extra lights when the lightning flashes? to have them out clear like what you have there. I have a video on a storm I filmed this past summer. drop by and let me know what you think.

I think the biggest difference is filming lightning with a CCD sensor based video camera, as oppossed to the newer CMOS sensor based cameras. With newer CMOS camera, lightning footage comes out pretty crappy due to a "rolling shutter" effect. You can google that term to get more info. With CCD, the entire image is captured at once, and therefore produces a clearer image of lightning. The cameras I was using for this video was a Sony VX2000/VX2100

at 2:10 you fill at the beach... but isn't that really dangerous ? i've learned as long as you can hear it, lighting can hit you even if you don't see the storm. Great video btw :)

I believe that one was the day after, on July 5th. We were down there for the 4th of July holiday so they were still people lighting off the leftover fireworks they had the following day haha.

+CECILIA TRAN There is definitely risk when it comes to photographing lightning. When out in the midwest, we usually let the cameras film outside the vehicle, while we watch from INSIDE our vehicles.
