What is it like to take a road trip in the winter in a EV?
What are the best All Terrain tires?
What is the best winter tire for my truck?
What tires come on the 2023 Ford Lightning?
Do tires improve the range or even if you can improve the range of your EV?
Can you take a road trip in a F150 Ford Lightning?
Can the F150 lightning survive cold weather?
Do the Ford Lightning batteries go down quicker in the cold
How long do batteries last in cold weather
Does cold weather effect range on an EV?
Have you ever wondered if your EV can survive if you are stuck in a winter storm?
Can you take a road trip in a F150 Ford Lightning?
In this video, we are taking our first winter road trip from Colorado to Texas.
The 2023 Ford F150 Lightning Lariat trim is such an awesome truck. You can even take a road trip with confidence. If you leave it in sport mode, the regenerative braking will help extend the range whether you are driving in town or on a highway.

It really depends on the state too. For example, I think EA is 56 cents per kWh in Colorado, but only 28 cents per kWh in Nebraska and Wyoming. Add the subscription to EA, and you can take 25% off those rates. My son is going to Utah State, much cheaper to take the route through Wyoming instead of staying in Colorado.

Thanks Trevor. That is a very good point. Every state does seem different on prices and changing all the time. Last summer I took a road trip and most states prices were about 36 cents with my membership, but Texas and a couple of other states charged by the minute, which made for super cheap charging. A total of $4 - $7 to fill up. Texas has since changed there prices it seems. :-(

I cannot wait until my lightning gets that update that shows the battery percentage on the gauge. It’s so frustrating that I see everyone else has it.

@F150LightningMike 6 месяцев назад
Hi Amanda, thanks for watching. Those updates seem to come differently for everyone. I’ve had mine for several months and even a couple of updates since then. However, I got mine a few months after others. One thing you could try is even if you have auto updates turned on, maybe go ahead and see if it has an update available and click on update now after you have your truck plugged in and charging maybe in the evening.

So nice to see someone posting out of Colorado Springs. Lived there for more than 9 years until we moved a couple of years ago. We still miss it. I bought my Mazda CX90 PHEV last year. If I would have known that you would have been able to buy a used Lariat for under 60k I likely would have waited and bought one of these (even though I REALLY wanted a 6 row).

Not that I’m aware of, but in Colorado I don’t even like to risk it. There is so much random stuff on the road from people’s vehicles you have to keep an eye on all the time. One time I was telling my daughter that same thing while we were driving and sure enough a 2 x 4 was just flying though the air at about 30ft high what seemed like in slow motion and I had to keep an eye on it to see which lane it was going in to move out of the way. :-(

That trip cost you around $.16/mile. That's about $4 to drive 25 miles, not that great of economy, and why I bought my lightning platinum to only use locally and only charge at home. If I only achieve the 1.7 miles per kwh, I only pay 4.7 cents per mile in the winter. I just can't see paying those high public charging rates. $1.75 to drive 25 miles, that's economical.
@F150LightningMike
@F150LightningMike 6 месяцев назад
Agreed…I mostly drive around locally too. So it’s pretty cheap, but yes driving on a trip is much more expensive. I still enjoy traveling in it though, and I have found ways to save money like charging at a hotel. Overall it’s about the same as traveling with a gas f150.

Is this your first EV and what made you decide to go EV? I have a Model 3 and had a Bolt for a little bit before that. I love EV road tripping. I like getting that first long trek (3 hours or so) and then stopping every 2 hours or so for 15-25 minutes...After 2 hours I'm ready to stop for a little break.
@F150LightningMike
@F150LightningMike 6 месяцев назад
Yes this is my first EV. I have over 30k miles on it so far and love it. I did a 4K road trip last summer too and it is my favorite. I don’t mind the breaks every 3 hours either.

I find DC fadt charging prices are similar to gas also.....lickily, I charge at home most of the time to offset that. I don't mind paying close to gas prices, as long as we aren't getting gouged....
@F150LightningMike

Yeah you get a little bit ahead with hotel charging but not much. It’s the charging from home that really makes a difference.

I live in south Texas where 100 Plus days of heat can by our high temps for months on end . I wonder what that does to EV battery life.
@F150LightningMike
@F150LightningMike 6 месяцев назад
I'm sure that extremes on either end of the temperature spectrum are not the best on any battery, but I have the "max tow package" which adds extra cooling for the batteries. And when I took a trip last summer for over 4K miles including through Texas it seemed to handle just fine. It actually got better range than what I'm experiencing now in the winter.

Forgive my ignorance but does putting a truck topper on the bed affect the 360 view ? Or affect anything on the truck? Currently looking at getting a 2023 platinum lightning. Thanks
@F150LightningMike
@F150LightningMike 6 месяцев назад
It does block a little bit of the bottom part of the rear view, but not too much to matter. Other than that it’s pretty awesome. I think it helps with the range a little too. Haven’t tested that though because I don’t want to remove it. Here’s a video I did about it: What is the best cover for the bed of the Ford Lightning? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tqTYk2cCjZw.html

@@F150LightningMike thanks for the feedback. I need a full size camper top due to my job and gear. Thanks again.
@F150LightningMike
@F150LightningMike 6 месяцев назад
In your case, then it would not be blocked by any of the 360 cameras that I’m aware of. I was only talking about the partial blockage on the rearview mirror so for you if you’re gonna put a camper on any vehicle, the rearview mirror will be blocked so it won’t make a difference whether you have a lightning or a gas vehicle. There is one camera though that you can look at the bed so I would imagine that one would be blocked.

I wouldn't be surprised if turning off the Pro Power does help a little bit. When it's "on" the the inverter is likely always energized. The draw may be minimal, but it's something. Similar to leaving a laptop charger plugged into the wall without the laptop.

@F150LightningMike
@F150LightningMike 6 месяцев назад
Hi Frank, yes I am still very happy with it. There are a couple of little things, like the 12v battery died as a result of an update that went through when I didn’t have it plugged in. So I had to learn how to jump it, which is the reason I started this channel. Also tires wore out too early because I didn’t have enough air in them to compensate for the weight. I now have 33k miles on it, and plan to drive it as long as it will go. Here is my 1 year 26k mile review where I talk about everything that I like and don’t like: 1 year - 26k mile - Review - Ford Lightning ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YZ-jeEzpk0w.html

I like my 2023 for sure. There have been good deals on them. Recently I believe XLT, but I always recommend the Lariat extended range which is what I have and you get a lot of added options from the XLT like BlueCruise. I’ve seen some lariat extended ranges going for mid 60s even high 50s a month ago. Check out the Facebook page called “No Markup Fords”. There are lots of dealers posting their deals on there.

Hey Mike, thanks for the videos. How accurate was the Apple Maps estimate on arrival charge? For example, it suggested 37% on arrival for the first stop. Also, do you believe Apple Maps is telling your truck to precondition? Are you seeing fast charging without using Ford nav? Thanks!
@F150LightningMike
@F150LightningMike 6 месяцев назад
It is not that accurate. I’ve seen it off up to about 10% on longer trips. Which was the case on this one. It does adjust as you are driving though. I don’t think it tells your truck to precondition, but I could be wrong. Yes on your last question. All of that is done through CarPlay. FYI: you should watch the second part of this trip when I post it. This whole range anxiety in the winter really hit me and the miss calculations of the miles remaining was really messing with my head. I didn’t even think I was going to make it. It kept telling me there were more miles to go than range available.

@@F150LightningMike I look forward to part 2. Thanks. Do you find Apple Maps to be conservative (get there with more than expected)?
@F150LightningMike
@F150LightningMike 6 месяцев назад
Yeah I’d say it’s conservative about 90% of the time, but it adjusts as you are driving so it’s the first number that seems conservative.

You're trying to FUD someone who actually owns a Lightning? "I'm hearing" is never a good thing to hear. And now he has access to the largest most reliable network in the world. A network that is significantly cheaper than EA. And a lot cheaper with a Tesla subscrition. For a one time payment of $99 you pay roughtly 30% cheaper rates for a whole year. That's less than the cost of a single fill-up on most ICE trucks out there. So knock down the costs he was showing by another 30 to 40%, and you get a idea of what he will be paying on the Supercharger network when he gets his free adapter.
@F150LightningMike
@F150LightningMike 6 месяцев назад
I agree. I have access to Tesla and I already have a Tesla subscription however, I have not received my adapter yet so when that comes in I will definitely use it. And I will record videos, showing my experience. I am a huge fan of this truck and not trying to say anything manipulative, fearful or untruthful just showing what I had to deal with on a trip and using my actual numbers to help people understand that if they do what I did it will cost about the same amount so the goal is to help people save money, not to make people run away from traveling with the lightning, which I believe is the best road trip vehicle. Keep in mind too everyone that you will get better range in the summer when you travel as opposed to winter.

Something else even more important is how long did it take to charge at each stop ? I’m hearing that it is 45-60 minutes.
@honesty_-no9he
@honesty_-no9he 6 месяцев назад
Depends on the charging station and how much you need most stops should be 20-40 minutes most stops are topping up enough to get to the next stop.
@F150LightningMike
@F150LightningMike 6 месяцев назад
I showed the time at each stop. It was 19 min., 20 min and 35 minutes. I should have stopped only twice. Skipping the first one, and it would have been about 2 - 35 minute stops.
