What is it like to own a F150 Lightning? How much does it cost to charge? How far will it go without refueling? Can you take a trip? How well does it work in cold weather? How much does maintenance cost? Overall is it worth it? In December 2022, I bought a '23 F150 Lightning, Lariat trim with the large battery and Max Tow package, and almost everyday since then I get questions like these above. So I created this channel to answer your questions from someone who is not borrowing a truck for a video, but someone that has owned, driven, and used an F150 Lightning for over 6 months. Ask more questions in the comments of the videos and I will try to create videos to answer them. Hopefully I will meet you on the road some day driving your own Lightning. :-)
Give it two years or more and you won't be even getting 300. Ever have an iphone for more than a few years? That battery doesn't last as long year after year.
Try it when it's cold and raining or snowing and you havè to use the heater, lights, windshield wipers or tow a trailer. I have a friend who had one , he got rid of it within 6 months, lost his ass.
Here’s a winter test I did testing different modes. It’s definitely less. I think I ended up with 2.4 in sport mode, so that’s a little more than 10% less in the winter. Ford Lightning - 1 Pedal Drive vs Sport Mode - Winter Range Test ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tjgFYQS1Aj8.html

Yeah I know right. I’m just happy I got a good result on my test and people either don’t believe me or they are just wanting to be mean without watching the full video to see more information about how I did it.
Here’s a video that I did recently on sport mode vs normal vs 1 pedal drive and for me sport is the most efficient. Ford Lightning - 1 Pedal Drive vs Sport Mode - Winter Range Test ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tjgFYQS1Aj8.html

Thanks I love mine for sure. Hauling actually does NOT impact range at all. Towing will, but I have filled up the bed and the frunk as you see in this video and it hauls it great. Can a Ford Lightning Haul Anything? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-meOK3cLwryY.html
Your channel has really given me some good information. And as a Denver resident just north of you I feel it's pretty apples to apples. Thanks again and keep the content coming.
It’s a guess for me to have bought this new lightning, but so far, stress range is not there. I went from Moncton NB to Ottawa ON, with no problem at all. I must say tho that usually, I’m doing short distance, living urban area, using the truck for my tools and for a generator. I have to charge it about once every two weeks, for about 2-3 hours max. I keep it at 80% max.. it takes forever to reach out the 80-100 and got no need to topping off anyway.
I installed my ford pro power. Way better when not everyone is tight on schedule to charge it before it needed it. Paid 600cad installed, and my portable charger stay in the frunk for when I go visit my family where there are not much public charger over there. But I agree, having your own gas station at home is very nice
This is good information. I think my quote was pretty high, but there were multiple electric companies saying around the same price. I’m glad you got a good deal.
After three years of driving electric, the confidence of not running out of battery definitely has gone up for me, but one thing I suggest that most people do is pick a time and place where conditions are great and you’re not in a hurry and you have a back up plan Take the car past 0% battery a mile two miles whatever you want, but just do that. once you do that then you can personally feel confident you could do it a second time if you really ran into a tight spot. Experience and time have a way of helping alleviate many fears that people might have without going through that in person.
My experience is 70 mph on the highway is the max you want to drive to get great range. But hey sometimes if it’s 85 and there are enough chargers for you to charge more go for it. BlueCruise doesn’t work past 80 though.
The Bolt has a great gauge cluster feature that shows the max and min range guesses including the middle guess range. It was handy for knowing what the best and worst range could be at the time.
@@F150LightningMike had it for about a year. The constant recalls and battery fire danger made me lose faith in it. Great car and good 200 mile range. Charges very slowly 50kW.
@@F150LightningMike people and critics overestimate how much charging they’ll need day to day. I used a splitter off of the dryer 30 circuit and it was just fine for every day use. My charger set to 16 amps was enough at 3.5kW. I also got a Bolt EV on Turo and charged with a 110v socket just fine for that trip! All local area driving.
I agree. Most of the time I am only driving about 50 miles at the most so it doesn’t take that long for me to charge up. That’s why I had an electrician install a 240v outlet and I only use my portable charger. And it works great.
The speed limit going up and down the mountain is 45-55 depending. For the last 40 miles I was going about 65-70 on the interstate. I also use sport mode and turn off Pro power on board which both save me on range.
Sure thing. I used to think that I needed it turned on in order to charge my phone, but that is not the case. The USB ports run off the accessory power.
Horse owners said similar things about early automobiles. Yes, EV’s are not perfect and the infrastructure still has to grow to meet the demand. However, the market is growing exponentially. So naysayers should just stick with ICE vehicles and quit the negative reviews of EV’s.
I’m only at 1:46 but the assumption that you can treat as a normal F150 with only charging at the end of the week is a bit false. Bc if something happens in your life that you need to emergently travel further than planned it is no problem with gas. I know in other respects you are correct but having just an electric battery this is a major downside. If it had the Volt or new Ram where it could run off gas for a range extender it would be different
Just finished. Great job. That efficiency is great for such a big truck. I’m sure the lower mph limits helped on those back roads. For commuters who spend a lot of time on back roads with speed limits less than 55 they might be able to get 350 miles. To add to my comment above the beauty of the EV is that you can keep charged at you house to keep a cushion of charge in case of emergency
Yes you are correct. If for some reason I needed to go further for an emergency as you are suggesting I would then I would just charge it that night instead of waiting till the end of the week. If I need to as well there are at least 5 fast charging stations in Colorado Springs and 1 in divide, a town near Woodland Park.
@@F150LightningMike true. The example I was thinking was I got a phone call once that a family member was admitting in the hospital to trauma for a crash and I was driving at the time and rushed there. Was glad I was t in my electric vehicle at the time bc I wasn’t driving efficiently (😉) and the hospital was over an hour away.
By charging to 90% or whatever you feel like is important for your possible emergencies every night it really alleviate a lot of anxiety as far as if an emergency would come up because you could go long ways on 90% charge even 80% charge and by the time that’s used up, you can figure out another plan or call somebody else to help you if it really came down to driving that many miles in case of an emergency However we all know emergencies are different. We can never really plan for everything no matter if it’s gas or electric so I think the pros definitely make it worthwhile to drive electric.
I wonder how many people that haven’t driven electric vehicle very much , or at all realize how much quicker they are so that’s one of the pros in case of an emergency. They will perform better than every other vehicle on the road and not just buy a small margin I would choose an electric vehicle. Any chance I got if I had an emergency situation, and not worried as much about the range because for the most part, the range is sufficient anyway.
Nope I have Falken Wildpeak AT3w with about 11k miles on them now. I had to switch early because the hankooks are not good. Here’s a video I did about that: Tire Issues with the Ford Lightning - It’s New Tire Day! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-u-4X7t6-Bjg.html
Don’t get fooled by these electric cars people, you’ll be taxed by the miles you drive eventually, also don’t believe all the range stuff cars don’t ever go that far with ac on and radio on.
Not sure what you are saying. The radio and other accessories run off of the 12v battery, which gets charged by the bigger battery. The ac and the heat both use energy from the big battery but not that much. And yes I really did get this range. Here’s a video test of me sitting idle in -9 degrees to show you how much the heater actually uses:
Maybe so. I might do a test like that soon too. Comparing it to going up and down in elevation though it might be hard to beat. I wonder if I can get 3.0+ in city driving? Keep in mind though I have falken Wildpeak AT3w tires on so it might have impact on the range a little, but I still got 2.7 on this test in spite of those tires.
I use sport mode (Without) 1-pedal and turn off pro power onboard. That helps me get better range. In this case the change in elevation also helps, and the fact that my max speed was 55 except for the last 40 miles that were 65-70. If I wasn’t driving on the interstate for that last little bit then I would have gotten even better range.
Great test, thanks so much for your channel, it’s explaining so much! Bought a F150 Lightning in Kansas a month ago and drove to Santa Cruz, CA for the first road trip
Thanks. Yeah the range hasn’t had any impact from any battery degradation, since buying it new. Wow 20k in half a year that’s a lot of miles. Great job!
Yeah the platinum has the 22” wheels so the range would be worse for sure. You should be able to get 300 in the summer though., depending on speed and if it’s all in town vs. highway.
