A 'point and squirt' aeroplane that was introduced operationally in 1959 and lasted until 1988 did rather well.

Excellent interview again! I like how Grinner is describing the Lightning. Often pilots tend to exaggerate, especially if a particular aircraft was their first love. Would love to hear some Lightning versus Starfighter stories. As far as I know some Starfighter pilots mentioned Lightnings due to their speed were a challenge. IIRC F-104s were on low level flights at high speed, and not many aircraft were able to follow them.

Great interview, maybe next ask the expert to explain what the alphabet soup of phrases and acronyms mean. I was a boswains mate in the navy and still didn’t understand any of his lingo….
