This video came up on my feed, good kit! I teach prepping and security and am a big advocate of front loading (suitcase style) packs vs top loading (duffle bag) packs. The contents of the kit is well thought out, I too recommend most of what you showed. Medical kits should be readily available, so I recommend that they are either on the inner top or mounted to the outside of the pack. Fish mouth spreaders are good when boiling water. As a former Eagle Scout and current Scout leader, I use Boy Scout Merit Badge pamphlets as handouts covering most topics. They are easy to read and understand. I also recommend the BSA Field book for more in depth knowledge. And survival by the numbers = 2 is 1 and 1 is none (redundancy of critical items). And remember the 3s: 3 hours exposed to inclement weather 3 days in hot weather without water 3 weeks without food

I have a question for everyone and it's in regards to water filters freezing. I have watched quite a bit of through hikers and one of the main issues they have is their filters freeze and are useless. This kit definitely addresses this issues by having a Sawyer Squeeze or back up that can definitely be kept warm close to the body, in a pocket, whatever. But I see so many going for the Grail filter and as of yet I just don't get it. What is the advantage? For 90 dollars no less. I have the Katadyn Be Free because like the Sawyer I can store it in a baggie stashed in my pocket. It's an open filter so no need to backflush. I bought a ton of these .01 micro filter socks another company made for this filter and they work brilliant for keeping all debris out of the filter and so easy to pull off and wash. I also chose the Be Free for the wide mouth and the Hydropak 'Seeker' model bottle bladders I can pair with the filter. These come in 2l and 4L so I can carry allot of water if I needed to. They can be frozen or hold boiling water so they can double as a wash up station because they have the ability to hang, and even create a solar shower with one small attachment. Hang and create a gravity feed to fill bottles. I think of medical use to hold ice or create a hot water bottle. Platypus has a similar system. The back flush syringe on the Sawyer I suppose could be used to clean out wounds, flush out an eye, so it's atleast a multi purpose item. The little bag it comes with is pretty useless and the number one item found in the trash for through hikers as they break easily. Hydropak also makes the bladders to fit Sawyer. If water is super nasty it's a good idea to carry men's cotton handkerchiefs because they are dye free to prefilter water. Bandannas and Smaugs are made with toxic chemicals dyes from Asia. Or even washed with you toxic laundry detergent from home. Think Tide Pods. If you boil them the dye just leaches out. It's better to cut up white cotton better linnen bed sheets, bleach and keep wrapped sterile especially for medical use and water filtering. Keep the Smaug as clothing, a sling or Sun, wind, cold protection. All common sense.
@preparednesshive
@preparednesshive 5 месяцев назад
Appreciate your insights all around here! Freezing water filters is definitely a concern, and like you said, keeping them on or near your body is ideal in those extremes. That said, The Grayl can handle a couple freezes before being rendered useless, unlike the Sawyer Squeeze. If I were in an environment where freezing temps were more of a concern in a larger portion of the year, I would likely go the same route as you have (love the Katadyn Be Free as well and have several I keep on hand for emergency use - especially in my vehicle).

Very good choice of items. The only thing I am missing, is a medium sized swiss army knife. Sure, the multitool will provide similar capabilities, but the pocket knife will provide it faster and more convenient. And a Bundeswehr Field Stove would also be a great addition. Nice start. I live in the north east so extra socks, beanie, gloves and pretty much head toe is critical. I also always keep Vicks rub. Vehicles get a tote and a back pack, hiking boots, you outfit from the vehicle and carry as close to 20 lbs each. Water is everywhere here so 3 ltrs and a filter is plenty. I didn't see signaling like a whistle and orange panel incase you need to increase rescue odds. I acknowledge your radios, lights, mirror and fire but a signal panel is set it and forgot it. Slingshots are light effective tools for travel. Final thought, I would ALWAYS choose a hip belted larger pack in a subdued color. By day 2 your going to thank me.
@preparednesshive
@preparednesshive Год назад
Appreciate the feedback Jason! Clothing, or your "walking shelter", are super critical in colder climates for sure - I never leave the house without an extra layer! And you're right in that there will definitely be items that need added or swapped out depending on your specific location/environment. Slingshots are great and fairly easy to master, we just prefer a firearm if it's allowed in your area. And a hip belt is definitely a plus and more comfortable overall... the ability to drop the pack and flee quickly just ended up winning in terms of priority. Again, thanks so much for sharing your knowledge/experience!

@andrewbeilke502 Год назад
Seems like no one is going to give constructive criticism, so I will. The "Grayl" water filtration system is great but pricey, Sawyer and Katadyne have good systems that will work just as good. A lot of fire starting materials can be made at home without buying pre made items. The biggest issue I have is with the medkit. First thing I noticed was no PPE (personal protective equipment). Every kit should have gloves and masks. The trauma kit is a little overkill, and unless you have been trained to use certain items like an airway kit, the patient/victim may be better off without somebody jamming a tube or hose in the nose or mouth. Chest seals are another issue as well. They are a lifesaver if a person knows how to place them. They are also to make from a piece of plastic and some tape. Save a few bucks and don't buy the pre packaged ones. Also, learn how and when to use one. Adding a bottle of baby aspirin to the kit can be crucial if you come across a person with a possible cardiac situation. A 10 cc syringe of saline is not exactly effective in wound cleansing. Those syringes of saline are designed to be hooked to an IV line to help push medications, not wound cleansing. Suggesting to spend $30-40 dollars on a specific tourniquet sounds like a plug. For over a hundred years, people have made a tourniquet with nothing more than a crevat and a stick. Everything doesn't have to be brand name to work. I keep maxi pads in my kit for large dressings. A trick I learned from an underbudget volunteer ambulance service. Guess what? They work fantastic. I'm sure I will have naysayers replying to my comments and that's fine, but I have 8 years in trauma and EMS services and have treated hundreds of people. I don't know everything, but I have had experiences in a lot of situations similar to what this medkit has been equipped for. These are my takes and how I might tweak it a little. Closing thought... If you aren't trained to do something, don't make an attempt. I watched a "prepper" stick an IV needle in his arm in the wrong direction once. That was a bad day for him.
@preparednesshive
@preparednesshive Год назад
Really appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback, and being an EMS/trauma responder, I’m not surprised by the concerns you raised. I couldn’t agree more in that you should be adequately trained in order to use any/all of the gear within, which I should’ve been more adamant about mentioning. Some of the items you mentioned are included in the kit, I just didn’t go through everything provided to keep the video more palatable. In any case, I hope it provided a little support for your bug out bag needs at least. I’ll take these insights to heart, and again, thanks for sharing!

Forget about any of this stuff if you aren't at least twice a year going out and using this to really learn how to use it in a real survival situation. Go someplace and live with ONLY what's in your kit for at least 24 hours. People uy this stuff and never practice and learn to survive.

Chances are if you ever needed a bag for 72 hrs your not going to need much. If it was a natural disaster or a evacuation you would just travel a few towns over or go stay with family or friends or get a motel. So the only bag that makes sense is the "inch" bag which stands for I'm never coming home bag. If things get that bad then you're not coming home. So pack accordingly for that.
@preparednesshive
@preparednesshive Год назад
In those two scenarios, you’re absolutely right, it’s just the other infinite possibilities that make versatility key. An inch bag would serve most any purpose, you just have to deal with the added weight of carrying around all the extra gear. In a bug out scenario you may plan for a 72 hour trip that ends up taking 2-3 weeks to get where you’re going. In this case, having something in between (like this pack) would’ve served you well. Ideally it’s a smooth and fast trip, assuming you chose to leave at the right time, and none of the gear really gets used! In any case, I appreciate the feedback and am always open to sharing perspectives if you want to continue the conversation!
@sparrowflying864
@sparrowflying864 Год назад
@@preparednesshive Yes, It's hard to figure out what you might use and what you wouldn't. I figure just pack for inch and if I don't need the stuff then I could stash some of it somewhere and come back for it later. I'm hoping to be far away from it all when the shtf. Maybe have two bags. One for the vehicle for scenario one ( 72hrs ) with food, electrolyte powder, tarp, sleeping bag, ground sheet, silcock key, water bottle, water filter, clean socks, knife, eye drops, bandana, paracord, some fire making items, lueko tape, bug spray, hygiene kit, clean change of clothes, map and two compasses and weapon and some cash. Scenario two, I'm packing like I'm never coming home and stashing what I don't need imeadiately along the way.

I've heard that leather men multi-tools break in cold weather and I've. Seen demos of Leathermen vs Gerber multitools with cutting chain link face. The leatherman broke far more than the Gerber's

We've always had great success with Leatherman multitools over the years, but good to know that Gerber is a good option as well, especially at the price point. I'm guessing neither of these are meant to cut chainlink fencing, but knowing you can in a pinch (at least with the Gerber) is also helpful ;) Appreciate you sharing!

Lots of options being a warmer climate like that. Just looking at a pack list I found online, here's a few thoughts that come to mind from my perspective, some being weight savers and others just ideal in terms of gear: On your person: - "Rite in the Rain" notepad would be ideal with mechanical pencils and/or ballpoint pens (one of each). - Titanium Leatherman might save you a little weight as a multitool/knife option - Add a bic lighter 24hr and 72hr packs: - I'd swap the matches/case out for a ferro rod and some mini infernos just for a better fire solution - Depending on the intended use, you might swap the 50' of paracord out for 50-100' of #36 bank line. Could save a little space and provide plenty of strength for shelter support. - As for a spare flashlight, Nite Ize makes a mini red led light (amzn.to/41HIYtD) that's a great space saver and highly functional. Clips easily to your shoulder strap or inside your pack. - For a shelter system, I'd stick with a swagman roll for your sleeping bag, the large garbage bags as a sleeping pad (fill with soft debris), and a USGI poncho to double as your shelter. This would avoid the need for a tent and sleeping pad. Or perhaps an ultralight hammock to avoid filling/emptying the garbage bags each night. You might consider adding a blow up pillow (only weighs a couple ounces) just for a little added comfort too (but not needed with the hammock option). - With mosquitos being as bad as they are down there, the hammock with net option may be most comfortable - those bastards will still bite you through the bottom of the hammock though, so be sure to put the swagman under you lol. - And I'm sure you know this, but freeze dried meals are the lightest of course - they just take up a lot of space when you're trying to carry 4-5 days worth. 3600 cal meal bars are good space savers, but don't taste the best and won't change the weight much. They can make it easier to get your pack weight ratio/organization to a more comfortable place though. Hope this helps, but I'm guessing I may not be telling you anything you don't already know - happy to continue the convo via email or call if you'd like though. Just hit me up on the website contact form. Thanks Dewey!

I call them my basic cross country road trip/bike-packing/camping bag. Basically, stuff you need when things go south. Otherwise, I shelter in place and have everything I need at home, or ready to church into the car to high-tail it if necessary in a few minutes. Where I live, we typically have ample warning to evacuate (hurricanes). Most of them aren’t much different than a through-hike backpack.

Keep in mind on food, like those "SOS Food Ration Bars"(or any), they are "hard" to bite and chew. (A problem with false teeth), and expiration dates. The ones I had were good for 5 years. (I just threw them out) Also, a BOB like this, you're going to Easily have "Several" hundred dollars invested in this.
@preparednesshive
@preparednesshive Год назад
Appreciate the feedback on the ration bars, that’s a valid point! Food rotation in your pack is no different than in your home too, so expiration is always going to be a factor. That said, if you have any recommendations for longer terms foods outside of the freeze dried pouches we included as well, please feel free to share! And yes, “several” hundred dollars was put into this pack as it was part of a giveaway… there are lots of affordable options out there though, especially the more skilled you become over time. Really great bag. For my greater area I need a much more bulky bag during almost all seasons. Even in late spring, early autumn it can drop to 5°C (32°F) with lots of rain and wind. That makes me almost always packing my Carinthia Observer, a real 3 Season sleeping bag and a sleeping pad. If its winter, I need to amp that up with a really really bulky winter sleeping bag. All in all my Get Home Bag weighs between 14-18kg (30-40lb) depending on season.

The last thing you want to be doing in this situation is carrying a "tactical" type pack. If I'm looking to acquire resources in an emergency that's the first thing I'd be looking for. I'd recommend a cheap and shit brand backpack to avoid drawing attention to yourself.
@preparednesshive
@preparednesshive Год назад
Appreciate you sharing, and I certainly can't disagree with you depending on where you're bugging out from. The gray man mentality is super crucial in most areas, especially urban environments. We opted to go with 5.11's AMP series as we felt it blended enough basic backpack (solid color exterior, no visible molle, etc) with tactical versatility. It isn't the most gray man pack out there of course, but it feels "safe" enough from our perspective. Ideally your journey, with whatever pack you have, is early enough that it won't really matter - hesitation is a bigger concern than any equipment you may or may not have ;)

Great video. I like the fact that you are including the people who normally do not know Bushcraft, etc. and are just getting started on preparedness. With that in mind, I’ve been watching the news and for the different scenarios that you do have to bug out. Generally you would have to seek shelter with other people probably set up by the city or the state that you live in. What do you do, if they don’t let you in with the weapons, i.e. guns knives, etc. I’m assuming they will check for weapons before they allow you to go in with the rest of the group?
@preparednesshive
@preparednesshive Год назад
Appreciate the feedback, and great question! First, I commend you for thinking about this now instead of having to react when the time comes... you're two steps ahead of most already. Having a plan, or multiple plans for that matter is absolutely imperative! To answer your question directly, yes - they will almost certainly take your weapons upon entry, and I would not plan to see these again for the most part. The top two things that come to mind here are 1 - Mutual Assistance Groups (MAGs); and 2 - Survival Caches. If you don't have or belong to a MAG, we have an article on our site that talks about all the details around the importance of these, especially in a bug out scenario. Being part of a MAG would mean that you have a location you're going to rather than a shelter, which is far more ideal, and likely safer for that matter. If you're not part of a MAG, and/or just plan to go to a local shelter of sorts, you may want to consider integrating a survival cache somewhere along your planned route to get there. Survival caches are simply a buried or hidden sealed container with some important "cached" items (couple of meals, firearm(s), ammo, water filter, fire kit and maybe some form of shelter, depending on your environment). This can be tricky in an urban environment of course as there's no place to really bury or hide anything without the risk of losing it. There are some creative ways around this though... We'll be launching a video in the next few weeks talking about these, so be sure to tune in if you think this might help you! Hope this helps!

Great to hear you got some value out of the content, although I can’t promise anything regarding INCH bags anytime soon. In fact, I’m more of a proponent of utilizing bugout bags and survival caches (which we’ll be releasing a video about soon) with a planned location(s) in mind. If a SHTF scenario comes about, I really don’t want to have to rely on one pack to get me though. Whether I have to book it and flee at a moments notice, or maybe even get robbed by a larger group, I think it’s smarter to diversify if you can. That said, if you’re looking for more creative options to include in your pack, hit us up on the website and we continue the convo there - always open to supporting anyone who’s interested in being more prepared :)
