The Buzz Lightyear Star Command animated movie was a great way to explore the character and world in a way that felt like it gave way to the toy. A Saturday morning cartoon that seemed to be made for kids around the same age as Andy. And it was also cool

To be fair... other than having the toys literally watching Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, that series never made sense being in the Toy Story universe either. The two biggest problems are Emperor Zurg is at no point revealed to be Buzz Lightyear's father. I know that was just a joke in Toy Story 2 but the whole thing about the toys in both movies is that they don't know they're toys, they actually think they are the characters. So for Zurg to randomly quote something as a toy that the character he's based on never actually says makes no sense. Unless that Zurg was like a factory error that got mixed up with a Darth Vader toy so that's why the Star Wars reference is in there? Anyway the other issue is that in all of the Toy Story movies there's no indication what so ever that the little alien guys are part of the same franchise that Buzz Lightyear is suppose to be from. In Buzz Lightyear of Star Command they're literally working for Star Command the entire series so Buzz should recognize them in the Toy Story movies as being members of Star Command when they meet in the claw machine. Instead Buzz treats them like some random aliens he's never encountered before just like everything else in the movies. Emperor Zurg is the only other toy we know for sure is actually connected to Buzz so it's weird to randomly put those aliens in there as well. Thematically it makes sense that they could exist in the same fiction but to just assume everything sci-fi has to be connected some how is like having a Kree alien randomly show up in Star Trek. That said... this movie I think has even more problems since the personality of Buzz in the movie doesn't even match the show or the toy. Plus we're suppose to believe that this is a movie that would have been made in universe back in the 90's when the movie can't even come out TODAY without huge amounts of controversy around it. I mean the movie is actually banned in some countries because of that Lesbian kiss scene and there are parents today that won't let their kids see this movie because of that scene but we're expected to believe that this movie came out in universe nearly 30 years earlier without a single parent complaining? Are we to assume that humans in the toy story universe are a lot more tolerant of homosexuals than humans in real life? Don't get me wrong here, I personally do not have an issue with that scene. There are kissing scenes in kids movies all the time and this isn't any different just because it's two women, doesn't really matter. I just find it hard to believe that a movie like this could realistically have been made 30 years ago and had a popular toy line based around it when there are parents in the real world that still today would not allow their kids to see this movie over something so stupid. Plus the fact the suit the toy is based on barely being in the movie so why is a kid going to get excited for something they never actually see utilized in the movie? I could see this being a reboot that exists in universe today, something Adult Andy may have seen because of nostalgia and been largely disappointed with but it's so disconnected with what we know about the toys in universe that I can't really imagine Andy seeing this movie before he had a Buzz Lightyear action figure. I don't know would any kid TODAY be interested in buying toys based on this movie? Also why is it the real life toys based on this movie look way more detailed and nothing at all like the toys in universe? Again that really makes it feel like a reboot even in universe rather than something that would have existed to sell the toys in Toy Story. Buzz Lightyear of Star Command feels more like something that would exist to sell toys.

This film was not needed

It sounds like they had a Buzz Lightyear movie as a concept and then tried to be smart and add depth but lost the target audience as they didn't make characters or action the focus

Obi Wan is ok and Doctor Who (The Timeless Bollox) is acceptable but Lightyear destroyed your childhood???? Words fail me.....

I've seen a theory that this isn't actually the movie Andy saw as a kid, rather it's a "live action" remake akin to Jungle book, Lion King and Aladdin from within the toy story universe and that Andy has grown up, he's had kids and this movie has released so he's taken his kids to see it because he remembers the TV show from when he was a kid. However, the fact that this theory exists is just further proof of how bad this film is, that it needs the theory that it's a crappy live action remake to justify why its so bad

Someday you could make your own edit of Lightyear that only keeps the best scenes.

I'm yet to watch it, but that title card confirms my main objection to the film: Why isn't Tim Allen doing the voice, if Andy's toy was based on this film it would have sounded like Chris Hemsworth, no?

Il admit I was exactly the same, where’s the laser? Where’s the jet pack? It turns out buzz is the one who built the suit in the first place, when he sees the wrist laser being used and the jet pack in the movie they add it to the official design going forward, also there’s is no way this is the film Andy saw, the 1990s cartoon is what Andy saw as a kid , buzz lightyear of star command the adventure begins They mention the suits were designed by buzz in a random line that no one pays attention to, if it were focused on more it would make sence, and the less said about zurg the better

First, Pete Doctor is in charge of Pixar now. He directed Monsters Inc, Up (I believe) and a few others. In my personal opinion, Pixar in general has kinda gone downhill. I personally consider the studios golden age to have been Toy Story until Toy Story 3 in 2010. Cars 2 onwards, I think their films have been either really great (Finding Dory, Turning Red, Soul etc.) or just painfully mediocre/bad (Luca, Onward, Cars 3, Toy Story 4 etc.). Too many sequels, lackluster writing and, worst of all to me, losing its identity: John Ratzenberger barely does cameos now, no A113 references and no sense of venturing out into the world in their stories. Lightyear was just okay for me but those first two Toy Story films will forever be untouchable to me.

I liked it, but I think it definitely could have done with the changes you mentioned. For me it was the minor comedic bits like the gps joke and the introduction of the rookies that made the film, as well as socks. I think the marketing really set up expectations that the movie couldn’t meet.

I was already not thrilled with the movie while I was watching it, but what they did to Zurg was the final, unforgivable, inexcusable straw for me.

I totally agree I haven’t understood why we need this movie like I was when toy story 4 came out cause 3 was the perfect ending to the franchise with 4 retconing it and like I have said before buzz lightyear of star command still feels like what Andy could have seen to make him want a buzz action figure cause they better connected it with the franchise with some of the toys doing a comeo right before the opening credits saying they want to watch the show like it existed in their universe as well as ours even though Tim Allen didn’t return to voice buzz and got patrick warburton to vice buzz how that could work is that Tim was the voice of some guy who could do a patrick warburton impression the company got to voice the toy cause it’s cheaper than getting the actual actor and Pixar actually did this with woody cause Tom hanks didn’t voice the toys his brother actually did

This movie was so... Eh It wasn't good or bad, it just exists and idk how to react with this movie, I have no opinion... The movie also makes no sense Why did they make a Buzz figure? Think about it, why isn't there a Socks figure in the Toy Story Universe... Why isn't her friend a figure? Why isn't old Buzz a figure? It's strange and annoying

Buzz Lightyear of Star Command is awesome and far superior to this film definitely. I still have my ancient as f*** DVD of The Adventure Begins on display with my Toy Story 10th Anniversary boxsdt of the first two films.

As someone who grew up on Pixar’s films and the Toy Story films especially, I personally enjoyed the film. I remember watching that 2D animated Buzz Lightyear movie you mentioned, Stephen, and I do have quite a bit of nostalgia for that one, but I’m not really going to compare this to that as they’re telling different stories from each other. I didn’t need this to break new ground in any respect, I just wanted to have fun with it and enjoy the ride and that’s what I got. And while I personally disagree with what you didn’t like about it, that’s totally fine, you can feel however you do about it. No big deal, to each their own! (BTW, in regards to the much talked about kiss, I don’t really think of it as tokenism seeing as LGBTQ+ employees at Pixar really pushed to have it in the film, so it’s fine.)

soo much missing potential in this film, my idea for the film zerg he is the father with a different name but have him as good space ranger fighting off a invasion of aliens or robots but have him as a quick back story of him dying as a hero in action by the robots while his son grew up to become like his dad years later , have him now and star command are under attack by robot tech are after the time travel crystals to use to destroy worlds or conquer , have it action pack and spaceship battles of all space rangers while buzz finds a way inside zerg's command ship , and have buzz and his friends sneaking in to take down the ship , like star wars the new hope it will make buzz to use all his gadgets in the ship , and later we get to zerg in his armor and all evil glory , and its just buzz and zerg, his friends have been blocked from the other side, and no music , just silence between zerg and him fighting while buzz is struggling, to a point we get empire strikes back, buzz : you killed my father , and zerg stops and doesn't kill him, and finds out buzz is his son, and we get the hall drama of no buzz I am your father , to as a twist of him betraying the star command , ether left to die or have evil intentions of him betraying the star command this entire time and now wants buzz to join but that leads to back to the final battle then his friends shut down the shield of ship then the space rangers gets a clear shot , which makes ship being shot down , slowly crashing down to a planet which make this intense moment that if they continue to fight they die, zerg doesn't want buzz to leave and die or become like him , which cause buzz to lazar beam his helmet and reveal his father burnt face and lets go, as the ship blows up buzz uses his jet pack to fly out along with his friends, the war is over, buzz is in distraught his friends confit him doesn't matter if your dad was bad or once was a space ranger , your the space ranger he wasn't it its just a quick idea but that is something that i believe is more faithful and with the funny star wars references

Tbh I think the first movie is to only set up sequels where Buzz ends up getting the wings and laser sometime down the road. They don't wanna be like the movie Andy saw in Toy Story was the first, rather it could be a later iteration that Andy was exposed to. Think about the MCU, they had to start somewhere to create a nice and adored franchise of movies.

One of the franchises I never bothered with. I grew up in a third world country with out a single toy, except for marbles, rubber bands, and my own sandals. While other kids got toys, movies about toys, now they got movies about the origin of said toys. But ppl making those movies longer care. Simply don’t give them any more money. Pls!

It's not a single kiss scene people have a problem with, it's the writing to get to that point. Instead of how can we make a entertaining movie about buzz light year it's how do we insert a lesbian romance into a buzz light year movie and it's that way of writing that is making these films utter rubbish 😂awesome vid!

It was funny hearing you talk about the idea of a Woody movie and your plot outline you gave that you intended to be 'bad'. When you started saying how it would be about Woody rebuilding a wagon in a barn, my initial thought was, "Okay, but what if Woody and his dad were building the wagon when he was a kid, but eventually the dad died and it was never finished, and because Woody became a sheriff he never learned how to finish building the wagon. So he has to go on this cross country adventure to find a carpenter that can help finish this shitty, old wagon. Maybe there's some bandits along the way, supplies are stolen, maybe the carpenter is killed even. Maybe the wagon goes unfinished because Woody realises he likes it that way better." Who knows. But it just goes to show that any idea can be a good idea, it's just about how you execute it. I think Lightyear could have been a really great, emotional movie, but they just didn't stick the landing. Worst part might be that it probably would have only needed a few more drafts of the screenplay to get there.

I disagree. I've seen "Lightyear" twice now, and both times I really loved the movie. I think it's the best film that Pixar has ever made. And I liked the twist with Zurg.

Eh, didn’t mind Lightyear all too much. The plot twist was kinda lame and Buzz’s origin of his iconic wings and laser felt like an afterthought BUT otherwise, good but not great 7/10!
