Leica is definitely at the top of the list when it comes to 35mm rangefinders. The Fed 5C is a camera from the USSR that tried to emulate what makes the Leica rangefinders so popular. So I decided to put a roll of JCH400 in it and see just how it measured up.

Great Video!! My grandfather had this camera, he gave it to my dad as he was younger so he could make photos with it. Now that my grandfather died, we found this camera in his apartment. And now I get to make photos with it. My grandfather lived in soviet russia and so did my dad half of his life. Thats why this camera has such a value for me. Greetings from Germany!!👋🏻

This is M39 screw mount. M42 is different flange distance.

@EasySolutions theoretically it's a zeiss mount. And widely know as a Pentax M42 mount. Zenit is kinda the last one you think of when talking m42 usually.

Correction. Its not M39 but LTM (Leica threat Mount) 39 or L39. This are rangefinder lenses and M39 is using for SLR camara's. Like Zenith 3M or urlier Practicar. Yes, the tread looks the same, the construction is different. Its a littlebit confusion. By L39 lenses comes the back site out and by M39 not.

Soviet rangefinders kinda peaked early in the 60s, by the 70s and 80s I believe the SLRs are far more advanced/better feeling. My Zenit-11 has a much smoother advance lever than my Fed-5v, and my medium format SLR (a Kiev 60) is generally much more comparable to its contemporaries. That being said, the 5v is a lot of fun to just lock down on one setting and then just walk and shoot in the street.

The top plate screw count is mostly an eastern European design style. If you ever work with Polish engineers they will always try to double or triple the amount of screws that an American would use. Also those cameras were very expensive in eastern block wages, they were meant to last and be maintained.

Another difference is that Fed 5b and 5 has a diopter adjustment, while 5c doesn't.

How are you so underrated? I just got my hands on the FED 5C as I’m currently in Russia. was researching the camera and stumbled upon your channel. It’s great. Really loved the way you’ve put things together. Already subscribed and awaiting more content from you.

thanks a lot Brijesh! just putting content out there and we will see what happens I guess. solid snag with that camera as simple as it is. also the lens is really nice and I would recommend trying it on a DSLR if you ever want a unique look. wrapping up 2 videos this week hopefully! keep in touch

Carrigan Whiteley glad to hear! They are great little cameras. Quality control wasn’t that good and they aren’t easy to repair, but if you get one that’s working they can give you some really nice results.

My friend just found one at the attic being unsure if it sill works. He gave me to test it after quick check and finding out everyting works properly - winder, shutter etc. I was surprised how good quality it was after developing the film. I loved Industar 61 on mirrorless camera, because it was the only old 50mm lens without coma on fully opened diaphragm. I used only built-in lightmeter on FED and everthing was properly measured. All photos turned out to be great. So I would really recommend it. The same with Zorkij - the shutter is shitty and camera feels like it's gona break in your hands and it needs some oil for mechanical parts - but the lens, oh my. I could read the letters from sign being 50 feet away.

Haha. Agree. Camera makes you question every shot you take but glass is shockingly nice. As long as you get one with the elements properly aligned.

Stumbled on your channel; good stuff! I especially appreciate the advance research you do (vs the standard RU-vidr’s lazy prompt to “you can Google that if you want to know). Minor correction: the Fed’s M42 screw mount is not the same as Leica’s L39 screw mount. But it is the same as the old Pentax screw mount. Dig your content.

On the market, this Fed 5C is about $30 to $60 and a cheapest used Leica is about $1000... it's surely not like a Leica and cannot compete with Leica by any mean. But it's still fun and very good to use.

Wow there Amerikanski! The film advance lever works and that`s enough for Soviet Camera :))) For the light meter to work, i think you have to remove the lens cap (not sure about it) :) Excellent chanel and videos!

Hello. Thanks for this very educative video. May I ask a question? I own a fed 5 and every picture which i shoot is out of focus. Actually they are focused but a little bit backward from the thing that I try to focus. As I look through the viewfinder it seems focused to me. But when I get the pictures I see they are not. What can cause this? If you have any idea please share with me I will be grateful. Thank you. Sorry for my English by the way. I hope you would understand what l am trying to explain. :)

Hmmm. So when you use the viewfinder it’s in focus but when you develop photos it is not is that right? It could be 1 of three things if I’m not mistaken. 1. The lens. If it isn’t the factory lens the distance to film could be wrong. Likewise since the quality control for these cameras was very bad, the lens it self could be defective and have elements slightly off of where they should be. 2. The viewfinder has shifted or was never calibrated properly in factory. Meaning the distance has changed and when you think your focusing at 3 feet the camera is focusing at 2.5 feet. This would mean you need to put it in a tripod, measure a distance and adjust the set screws for the focus mirrors ever so carefully. Lastly it could be the film pressure plate has lost tension and the film isn’t the proper distance from the glass.

it's not usable for composite the frame, it's a metal circle in middle that's too hard to check the corners of frame because of that

MrCelroy ha. It wasn’t easy or fun. There are 2 screws under the film advance lever and that whole thing has to be removed in addition to the shutter dial with the set screws (mark it’s exact position for proper re attachment ) then there are 2 screws under the name plate in the front

Horrible. Very difficult to adjust the speed on this camera. It is a kind of a timer, connected to the film advance lever.

Оптико-механические фотоаппараты достигли своего совершенства в 60-70 годах. Это касается метражных, зеркальных и дальномерных фотоаппаратов. Их развитие прекратилось. Виновата электроника. Это она все вытеснила. Но потенциал развития оптико-механической фотографии не исчерпан. Вся проблема в глоболизме, однополярности и засилии электроники и пластика.

Use black paint and it will look better than leica XD I think it is better becouse of price :3 1 Leica M4P= Fed + 3 Lens + scaner + Bag + Koreks + Developer + Fixer + a lot roll of film and even Fujifilm xpro1 XD I own a leica and Fed XD About light meter .... dude it is easier than f..... i can't belive that you can't figure out how to use it XDDD And about electra :3 After it btoke you can throw it to trash but new Fed is still cheeper :3
