Dear Starfleet Engineers, Just a heads up, please try to avoid reconfiguring your sensors to the attached spec, as it can sometimes cause interdimensional aliens to warp reality on your ship and abduct your crewmates for deadly experiments. Hope you're having a great day! G. La Forge

In an episodic format in which syndication at the time still largely dictated self-contained stories for each episode, it simply wasn't feasible. As well, Seasons 6 and 7 were already showing signs of the show struggling to come up with good stories as the writers began running out of ideas and the network began relying increasingly on sweeps-week gimmicks to garner more viewers. DS9 in later seasons and especially Voyager were infamous for such practices. And really, why follow up a mediocre horror story that didn't fit in with the tone of the show?
@Fatherofheroesandheroines

Remember how 1990s TV shows typically had self-contained episodes with no ongoing storylines or character development? Except for soap operas, of course! I recall watching Full House and noticing how characters would be introduced in one episode and then never appear again. It's fascinating to see how TV storytelling has evolved since then, with more complex, serialized narratives becoming the norm. The xfiles was an exception and i think a pioneer in continuing a narrative. Yet they would have more stand alone episodes as well. All tv shows including the next generation had a continuing narrative in a sense but was not a main point in almost all of the episodes. X files seemed to continue the narrative as a main theme in about half or more of their episodes. But i must say my favorite x files episodes were the stand alone stories.
