No one wanted to find Samara. Like the doctor said, when she went missing, things on the island got better. Samara projected images into peoples' heads and it drove Anna and the horses mad. The cabin was built on top of the well, and the TV was sitting right on top of Samara's grave. She projected the images into the tape and it spread from there.

This film is one of my all-time favorite theater experiences. To see this film in a packed house was absolutely magical. It's a slow build, with deepening tension throughout, and when she climbed out of that TV I think everyone about pooped themselves. When the film ended and rolled credits, the entire theater was stone silent and shaking. Some dude down front just said "fuuuuu..." and everyone just cracked up laughing. Stellar. Ring 2 is worth watching!

This movie was (indirectly) the scariest thing to ever happen to me. After watching it with my wife, and getting a few nice jump-scares, we had gone to bed. My then setup had a DVD player/stereo receiver that was the the main point of the entertainment center (very early 2000's), and would shut itself off after an hour or so being idle - the thing is, if you left the TV on it would default to static when the DVD player shut down. Which it did. LOUDLY. Right when I was walking to the kitchen from my bed to get a drink of water, and had me jump sideways clear out of my skin. White noise will never be so terrifying.

It's definitely a cultural difference between Japanese/Korean cinema and viewers and Western. In East Asia spirits just...are. they exist for a reason or for no reason. They can be good, bad, or indifferent. And they can decide who to help or hurt on a whim. Western cinema always needs a reason WHY the spirit exists, and why it's attacking this particular person or family. And frankly, I find the idea that a random evil spirit could randomly decide to torment me far more frightening than finding out I'm being haunted because my great great great grandmother didn't give a cracker to a witch in 1823.
@alexbruce9499

She's an Onryo. The stuff around her origins and nature is strongly rooted in Japanese folklore, so in the US remake it gets a bit lost as it doesn't perfectly map over to Western concepts of ghosts.

What I truly, truly love about this remake is the final reveal that Samara isn't just a vengeful spirit. She was a vengeful child. A sadistic supernatural child. Becoming a spirit so you can keep hurting people must be heaven for her. Just living her best afterlife. I know evil kids aren't all that uncommon of a phenomenom in horror fiction. But when I first came across this movie, I wasn't really a horror fan. And that reveal was so unsettling. To see that cute little girl smirkingly answer "You don't want to hurt anyone" with a "But I do, and I'm sorry. It won't stop". So creepy. So good.

The Ring was one of the scariest films for it’s time. It doesn’t matter if it’s not in Ringus level. It’s good enough. I understand your reaction to this after watching “The Conjuring “. But the Ring had a bigger impact in horror more than MANY other films ppl find scarier. I heard stories of certain ppl leaving the theater, video stores being shut down, ppl becoming afraid of their TVs, the JHorror trend starting in the early 2000s. It also inspired the VHS franchise. The Ring effect was HUGE.

Samara wasn't an evil entity, she was born with the power to inprint her thoughts on anything. Even as a baby she would unconciously burn images in the mind of people around her. She was never aware she was doing that to her parents and as a result couldn't understand the reason they were treating her like that. After her parents locking her up in the barn she started to have sociopathic tendencies and actively wanted to cause arm to others for no reason, because from her perspective that's how people were treating her. When she died, her ability to inprint her thoughts remained until one day they built a cabin over the well and placed a VHS tape right over it, letting her curse the tape. Samara became purely evil during her 7 days dying in the well.

Yes, _Ringu_ is better because the Japanese prefer their horror to be more suspenseful, while the US audience prefers to have more jumpscares. Different culture means the focus is on different aspects, but since Hollywood has more money, Japanese horror needs to be more creative. If you want to compare it to anything, perhaps _The Shining_ would be a decent comparison. More suspense, more creepy camera angles, that kind of stuff. It makes the movie _unsettling_ rather than scary and horror is at its best when it's unsettling, where the feeling lingers even after you finish the movie. _The Ring_ is honestly just a B-movie to me. They _tried_ and it was a decent movie, but it's just not particularly scary. And if you watch the Japanese version, there's an actual trilogy for this story ;)

The only horror movies I like are basically ghost stories. The problem with them, though, is that they tend to have a happy ending because the protagonist(s) investigate the curse and solve it. The reason why The Ring is one of my favorite horror movies of all time is that they do that, investigating the curse, find the cause, and have that moment of solving it....and it doesn't do anything. The curse continues. The only way to stop it from happening to you is to curse other people, essentially. I refuse to watch any of the sequels, though, as I feel that this doesn't need anything more. Top tier horror that solely relies on spooks (and a couple jump scares, but I'll forgive them for the rest of the movie). Top tier!

The story of this movie is a fair adaptation of the original Japanese film, but they really changed fundamental points to make it work better for a western audience. I have to say they did a great job at doing that, but I will always prefer the original. They kind of moved away from the meaning of the original in that the “ring” wasn’t the last thing she saw, but instead the cyclic ring of copying the curse and passing it on, so it endlessly repeats. They changed the story enough so that they’re completely different from each other so I can actually love both films as they are, with this one being more in-your-face horror style than the Japanese version which was very, very focused on the slow intense build and psychological torture of waiting. I recommend seeing the sequel as well as the original Japanese version and its sequel.

In the deleted scenes it's stated Samara is their biological child. It's implied Mrs. Morgan conceived through unnatural means. So Mr. Morgan was right his wife was not meant to have a child.

No one found her body because everyone in their small town agreed that her disappearance was for the best. Like the lady said “when you get a cold in a small town, it becomes everyones cold.”

You really need to watch Ringu and Ju-on in Japanese. The American versions are like 10% at best.

That's a freight elevator. Most of these condos in the US (especially near downtown of big cities) are converted warehouses.

38:30 - they don't have to actually show the copied video to an innocent person. Surely Rachel can find some lowlife ass out there, maybe some kiddie fiddler, get them to watch the copy and save her son that way.

Be glad you didn't watch this when TVs still went static. Post-2003 nothing was scarier than the TV going static.

You not understand J Horror, specially the Onryo myth, this aren't like western ghosts, here there is no resolution, no happy ending, ones you encounter a Onryo in her territory or mess up with her possessions, you are cursed for life, and she would chase you down to the end of the Earth and kill you, make you disappear from the face of the Earth or you are a innocent bystander drive you mad.

i think this movie is innovative but i think its overrated. and it open the flood gates for merican remakes of japanese ghost movies for years after. until paranormal activity changed everything.

Samara wasn't evil she had a evil spirit attached to her. her mother tried to drown her when she was born to get rid of the voices she was hearing from the demon i guess. I'm not sure if the demon gave her powers but Samara had the ability to burn images from her dreams or thoughs on to things. It's called nensha. Great truly sad in my opinion.

Samara tortured her mom so much it drove her to murder her despite her being all she ever wanted. It has echoes of changeling-stories where the fairy changeling exhausts the mother to death.
