=====================
Let's Start Here is the fifth studio album by American rapper Lil Yachty, released on January 27, 2023, through Concrete Records, Quality Control Music and Motown Records.[1][2] It is his first studio album since Lil Boat 3 (2020) and follows his 2021 mixtape Michigan Boy Boat.[1] The album is a departure from Lil Yachty's signature trap sound, and is instead heavily influenced by psychedelic rock.[1][3]
Background and release
In a January 2022 interview, Lil Yachty said his next project would be a "non-rap album", calling it "alternative" and "like a psychedelic alternative project. It’s different. It's all live instrumentation."[4] In December 2022, a project of Yachty's titled Sonic Ranch leaked on the Internet.[5]
Lil Yachty officially announced the album on Instagram on January 17, 2023, posting the cover art, title and release date. The cover is an AI-generated illustration of men and women wearing suits in a boardroom with "contorted facial features and warped smiles".[6] Yachty's caption referred to it as "chapter 2", with Variety calling it "a potential redux" of the leaked Sonic Ranch.[6]
On January 24, 2023, Yachty released a "thriller-style" skit in promotion of the album titled "Department of Mental Tranquility", in which he arrives at the titular department and is asked a series of questions by the receptionist in a waiting room full of people behaving erratically. He then walks down a narrow hallway and into a bright white room.[7]
The album was released on January 27, 2023.[3]

I’m so proud of Yachty. He’s always been somebody that, even if you don’t like his style, you can tell he loves making music, and it seems like he’s always wanted to do something different and stick out. With this album, he finally has!

I knew Lil Yachty was capable of making good vibey music; it's what made him a light breath of fresh air when he broke through in a sea of the usual trap rap. I just didn't expect it to sound like THIS.

Well, I guess by your word, since MGK is going back to Rap, Lil Yachty is stepping up to take his place in the rapper-turned-rocker sphere.

Trippie Redd was also headed in that direction somewhat until Mansion Musik (which was a bit more interesting than I’d like to admit but I digress)

MGK and Boat make 2 different styles of rock. MGK is punk and Yachty is more psych/indie. And there’s nothing wrong with experimenting with different sounds it’s the execution that counts. Yachty’s vibe works and MGK is a mid try hard 🤷🏿‍♂️

@@CJ2CLUTCH I'm aware. And I like that Yachty didn't go the same route. I was just trying to say he was one of the last rappers I'd thought would go rock.

Who knew that Yachty will drop an album that is less mainstream hip hop and more Spiritualized-like. Regardless, I really enjoyed it

Well darn, now I have to check it out. I wonder if there are any moments where Yachty uses a cello as a woodwind instrument. UPDATE: I don't think there are, but BOY, am I enjoying it! Yachty's ear for psychedelic rock instrumentation is to be highly commended!

I liked Let's Start Here, but when it comes to rappers deciding fuck it I'm going to make a depressing and surreal neo-psychedelia album, Lil Ugly Mane still takes that crown with Volcanic Bird Enemy

Lil Yachty was the LAST person i expected to make a rock album let alone a rock album that takes influences from prog and psychedelic music yet here we are. It's not perfect and there are times where i feel Yachty's voice can be annoying (specifically pRETTy) but when the album shoots for the stars, it really does. The production throughout especially is immaculate. I'm very excited for what Lil Yachty has got going for him next if this is the sound he'll be sticking with and refining further.

Now I *have to* check this out. I remember seeing him for "After the After Party" and wondering what he was saying. Then I came across a few videos with his lyrics like "Turn this shit to Columbine" on Broccoli or talking about his "balls in his nutsuck" on iSpy. So to hear he's doing something way different is piquing my interest.

You see, I know, as an artist, the use of AI generated album artwork should irk me, and 99% of time, it totally does, but I actually think it works here. If anything, the album art reminds me of a lot of Storm Thorgerson's artwork for Floyd, and the hideous warping of the faces on the cover give off the vibe of oddness, and the uncanny valley, and if Lil Yachty making psychedelic rock isn't the textbook definition of music that sounds like it comes out of the uncanny valley, I don't know what the fuck does. Now, would I have preferred Yachty to pay someone for a similar vibe with actual, labor made art? Duh, of course. But I'm willing to acknowledge when this kinda stuff is used effectively. Also, the record seems pretty decent.

Yachty actually has stated he doesn't actually listen to rap, and he made it because he made rap because it was. So it makes sense he's good at psychedelic rock

Good point my friend. I bet that he also didn't rap on time and that he constantly had to be punched in. Probably didn't get anything done in one take and probably doesn't deserve any of our respect.
