Lillie Ruth May Remembers the March on Washington 

At 12 years old and living in Mississippi with her family, Lillie was aware of the March on Washington through her grandfather’s cousin, who was then 90 years old. Lillie’s cousin loved and admired Dr. King and said she saw a spark in him whenever her cousin watched or heard Dr. King speak. Although her cousin always thought that Dr. King was in grave danger, still her cousin was hit hard when he was assassinated. It marked the first time Lillie saw her cousin cry. Lillie does not specifically remember seeing the March on Washington, but she’s sure she saw coverage of it because if Dr. King was on television or on the radio, her cousin was surely listening and watching…and so was she.
