A young escort arrives at a new client's hotel room.
LILY MEETS CHARLIE is used with permission from Audrey Gagneux. Learn more at lilymeetscharlie.com.
Charlie is trying to book a companion for the night when his regular girl isn't available. Instead, he decides to meet with a new person -- a woman named Lily who is said to be a "good listener."
But when Lily enters Charlie's hotel room, they're both in for a surprise: they know each other already, under Lily's real name. Ten years ago, Charlie abandoned Lily, leaving her broken and alone in life. And now they must reckon with the consequences of those events.
Writer-director Audrey Gagneux's short drama takes the classic two-hander format -- essentially two characters having a conversation together -- and layers a psychosexual element over it. But the drama and action are never titillating or prurient. Instead, it explores the ideas of responsibility to one another and reckoning with the effect our decisions have on one another.
Being a two-hander, the emphasis falls on writing and performance in the storytelling, especially its dialogue. It's not particularly wordy writing at first, however: instead, it's quite pared down and practices a quiet economy as it parses out key details, relying instead on the intelligence of viewers to piece together the mystery of just what Lily and Charlie mean to one another.
But as the two characters unravel the messy knot of history between them, the mysteries of their past and their relationship between them unfold for the viewers. The excellent script explores family, obligation and the impact of adult romantic relationships on the children that can get caught in the crossfire told from the point-of-view of those who have to live with the impact of choices they have had no control over.
Actors Barry Ward and Tanya Reynolds bring their characters to life with subtlety and honesty, balancing the narrative's need for a slow, gradual reveal with their needs and wants. The result is a slow sleight of hand that works on the level of character, not plot or other story mechanics. The gift of the storytelling is that as viewers unravel what happened between the pair, Lily and Charlie fully acknowledge this as well -- and the acknowledgment opens up emotional terrain for further growth.
LILY MEETS CHARLIE ends just before a "big reveal" or a cathartic atonement, but while some viewers may crave more, it's still an honest ending, for the arc of the film isn't about repair or reconciliation, but the recognition of the damage that exists between two people. This first step is seemingly small but crucial, allowing for two people to face one another honestly and vulnerably -- and to accept the power and responsibility of their interconnection, however long ago that it happened.

_"The moral of the story is, you don’t abandon your step children the moment their mother dies because they don’t have anyone else left for them."_ Ah... Yea, you do. They are not your children. If she would have said any bad words to the police oh because she didn't like the bedtime he imposed, he would be sitting in jail the rest of his life. I dated a woman that had an 8 year old daughter. One night her mother wanted me to bathe her because she was tired for some reason. I said "No". If her daughter ever spoke about it to anyone, I would have been sitting in jail the rest of my life. You do not understand that you are *Guilty* until proven innocent in Family Court. First time I've seen this. Hits home. My wife and I had to take custody of two grandchildren when they were 2 and 5. She passed away when they were 7 and 10. Granddaughter being the 7 year old. My wife had adopted the childrens mother...and I married her when the mother was still a teenager (wife was a widower, so was I) so I had absolutely NO blood relation to the kids. After my wife passed I struggled with the selfish desire to just give the kids back to their worthless mother....but after a few months I decided to not be a cad and continue raising them. This was 12 years ago. Grandson is now a pilot in the Air Force, granddaughter is in her second year of college. I never remarried, devoted all my time to raising them to be respectful, contributing members of society. I had a lot of help from both sides of the family..mine and my wifes...but I could not abandon them. I could just imagine after seeing this just how they would have hated me if I had. And of course I love them just as much as any parent could love their children.

I think this is a bit deeper than him just abandoning her. He clearly has money, paying for attractive escorts in a nice hotel - the one thing his step daughter is truly deprived of. Her job is basically providing support to lonely or desperate men with money. Basically, he's paying for prostitutes and she's a prostitute when in reality he could've just supported his step daughter from the get-go and this literally would've never been a problem. She wouldn't need to sell her body and he wouldn't need to pay women to pretend to love him. Humans are silly. A lot of our pains are self-inflicted. Our egos too big for our own good.

I didn't know of omeleto till this moment and the one thing that struck me was how very good the acting is it seems to be in this short at least. Thought the ladies performance was excellent, have to say it has a plot that was not anticipated, that was the reason it's so damn good. A deeper than surface plot combined with a performance by the players that is top shelf. More filmmakers could learn from this, I can only hope....

I grew up without my father. By 22 I he never sent a birthday card, called me and had a new family, giving his "new son" my name, like I was dead or never existed. It was something that always hurt me but I always acted as if I didn't care. I met someone who knew him at 22.I lived in CA and he was in Florida so it was highly unlikely. He agreed to meet me. I liked his personality and we had a lot of common interests. I found out a year later he was a monster. My mom never told me because she feared it would affect my image of myself growing up but he had grabbed me as an infant and threatned to brake my arm after my mom caught him cheating and wanted to leave. He did worse things as well. But it did make me a better father. I love my kid unconditionally and would NEVER harm or abandon them no matter what they did. But I get it. Nobody can damage us like our parents can.

Grief makes people do strange things. A good friend and his sister were raised by their paternal grandparents after the early death of their mother. Their father was so overwhelmed by the loss of his wife (who was his childhood sweetheart) that shortly after his wife’s death he failed to pick his children up from his parents home where they went after school, and disappeared. He rapidly drank himself into an early grave without speaking to his children or parent ever again. Prior to his wife’s death he had a good career and idyllic family life.

He is in as much pain as she is, but he is the cause of his, and hers. The regular ‘companion’ has helped to ease the pain in the short term as he had someone to talk to (‘good listener’), that’s why he reluctantly accepted Lily, and he then perhaps realised that talking with Lily would not just ease the pain for a short while but could help them both for good. He was a good guy that ‘fooked up’ big time and was so disappointed in himself he found it too hard to go back and sort things out. He past ‘wrong’ just showed up on his doorstep, and he was brave enough to deal with it. Well written.

It would be just as easy to create another different moment from their lives, entirely consistent with everything portrayed here, which would make most of you feel sympathy for him and disgust with her ....in a whole lifetime, individuals have many different facets, they are never simple ......

Then he chokes her while sobbing and telling her how sorry he is. However, she stabs him in the gut with a knife she carries with her for protection, unfortunately he was still able to kill her. @@almac9203 Yeah, the actual age gap between the actors Barry Ward and Tanya Reynolds, is only something like 11 years (Reynolds was born in 1991, and Ward seems to have been born in 1980 or 81, according to info on his IMDb page). This short was made/released in 2019, making Ward only around 38 or 39. I think his character is meant to be a bit older, and Reynolds' character is meant to be several years younger than Reynolds' actual age (since she looks younger, and has played characters younger than her age). So maybe the stepdad is mid-40s and "Lily" is 21. But if you ask me, Ward doesn't look over 40 there (he just has gray hair), although maybe we could believe Reynolds is 21~ there. Made me wonder, how old was Lily's mother supposed to be? Was she a teenaged mom? I guess this kind of casting is very common in film/TV/theater - casting an actor playing the mother or father who is only like 15 years older than the actor/actress playing their onscreen child.

If you daughter learns morals and love from you, much less likely this will even occur. Good luck, God bless.

It is indeed disgusting, but also sad seeing apparently her stepfather raised her like his own daughter for some years before her mother died and he left for 10 years. It makes me think about how there are many step-parents that do not take responsibility for their step-children in situations like in the film and in turn cause a troubled life path for the children left behind. Personally I have been to many orphanages where children were left in the same way as in the film. I think this is the biggest social comment of the film. It doesn't give solutions though.

They could not explicitly narrate this because he did not want to articulate what he had done, and was, indeed, internally covering up his misdeeds by drinking, such that he didn't recognize her even on his phone. The fact that @Anandi Ganguly "...NEEDS ANSWERS", shows she is as shallow and weak as the father character. But at least the father was going to face reality, it would seem, at the end of the story. I can't stop watching these short films. Its as if hollywood films never existed to me...also reading everyone's diff views of each film is teaching me alot about people's perspective on life...wow..Im 36 years old but I feel like I'm learning alot from everyones point of view.
