It's time for yet more plastering and this going to take a while! The kitchen diner is the biggest room in the house. There's three doorways (with curvy sides) to deal with and four stone features. There's also lots of exposed beams and lintels to work around. Join me for a bit of peaceful plastering and see this rough shell take one big step closer to becoming a real room.

This is one of the most comprehensive stone house hemp-crete insulation projects undertaken and will be used by those wanting to do something similar in the future, no doubt. Excellent workmanship indeed.

Hi. I might be able to help on your inside corners. Take a 3-4 inch trowel, put your mix in the corners from top to bottom and then run your corner trowel from top to bottom in one motion holding the bottom of the trowel out just a little bit. Don't use the corner trowel for installing just for shaping. If it looks good leave it until it drys , if not run the trowel again, don't worry about the outer edge yet. After it drys take a flat trowel and feather edge the outer edge. Don't be scared to go thick in the corners and maybe a little wetter. That's what I do for drywall. Hope this helps. GL. Cheers from Canada.

Saludos desde Chiapas, México. Nice work! I helped lime plaster a 800 year old traditional 4 square farm house in Lower Saxony in Germany, during my studies 40 years ago and it was an all granite stone structure, with around 1.5 m walls. I found it much easier to spread the lime plaster in rainy days. Like you it took us several tries to get a good consistency out if the plaster. We used chopped up wheat and rye straw, instead of hemp. It looks pretty similar in consistency to the hemp. Love your videos.

I admire your work and determination. I saw that you are having some difficulty spreading the product. The dough seems to have little water in it and is therefore hard, making it difficult to spread. It also dries faster and when you apply the sponge it also becomes more difficult. Sorry for my English, I got help from Google😊 .Keep going.

What a wonderful thing is plaster. Mind you I certainly see why people forced their aesthetic responses out of the way to make that ghastly stippling on ceilings acceptable. The sheer magnitude of the task makes those mental gymnastics reasonable. As well, for ceilings the bent back and arms raised work must be so much harder and must be torture on the body.You are such an indomitable couple ,so admirable.Your house is going to be absolutely sound for many many years to come.❤

Hey guys, not sure if it's been suggested yet as I don't have the patience to read more than a few comments down 😂 When you are going to do the limewash and need to cover the exposed stones, you cover it with plastic and then carefully use painters tape around the edges to secure the plastic and also define your lines. If the stone isn't as delicate, you can use masking tape, which is generally cheaper, instead, and then the painters tape on the outer edges only. This method is used for masking in various mediums and I think it would work just as well with what you are doing vs. spending extra time trying to work around it or using excessive painters tape to block it. Also, if you want to try it, as it would work awesome, secure a piece of denim (old jeans) to the top of the sponge float. The denim will keep the sponge from breaking down and it will give you a finer float finish. Fingers crossed you can move in before the end of the year!

Agree re: mix order - I learnt it's always best to mix the lime ( even if it's just a lime putty that you're letting down with water), and give it 10-15 mins to fatten, then add the hemp next, and give another 5-10 mins mixing before adding any pozzolan or extras like sand. It feels ridiculous waiting around for the first mix of the day, but it soon gets into a rhythm and there's always plenty of tidying up & cleaning to do while waiting! Walls are looking good, I think you're going to be really pleased with them once you've had a day or two away from it.

The plaster seemed much too dry when you were working on the corner - but don't listen to me. I have experience only in using a corner trowel to apply drywall mud. Hey, Guy, Another thought I had about you base coat(s) with the hemp in them. I agree, hemp first makes sense, but I suspect it's more that the hemp gets wet, and so being wet then ATTRACTS the lime in the mix, thus making it more 'buttery'. Or 'creamy', as I think you said. Another thought I had, despite your statement that you want the walls to have a 'rustic charm', it's nice if you can control some things better, and one of those is the outer corner edges of reveals and doorways. What my old Greek and Italian plasterers used to use was a length of 4x1 or 6x1 face-nailed to the wall, when FIRST doing the first few layers of the hemp based render/plaster. They mostly did this for either cement-based or lime-based sand renders (i.e. no hemp) but it made it so easy to then get a properly vertical corner, nice and plumb, and the wall of the reveal relatively flat and also plumb. I noticed some of your corner edges are a bit...wobbly.... I also know how OCD Kylie can be about things being plumb and straight.... So maybe there's room for improvement on the edges, and this might be the trick to assist? Essentially, you use masonry nails (or these days probably masonry screws) to attach the board lightly, such that it is easy to remove. Run your spirit level over it and pack it out or reposition it till you are happy with the fit. Obviously, with some sto ne walls, you might end up with plaster an inch thick at the top down to nothing at the bottom, but this up to yo and your 'easthetic' as to how far you push this. Once the vertically placed board is fixed you can then place plaster on the reveal, and ahave a 'screeding edge' effectively to screed to. Once the initial 'set' has gone off, remove the guide board and then trim the edge of the plaster back to say 45 deg. Then when you do the face wall, you simpoly use the screeded, cut back edge as your guide, and do as you have been doing. The trick to starting in the inside corner and pulling the float out and around the outer corner edge as you were doing is the correct technique. Keep the float clean and moist!! Pun intended.... All the best Mark in Oz
@markwalker7813
@markwalker7813 6 месяцев назад
Hey, Guy! Your skills with the steel float and hob are DEFINITELY improving. Been watching as you develop your technique. Probably, by the time you've finished the house, you'll be an expert plasterere, and never want to look at a float ever again!! lol Cuppla quick points: 1) the inside angle float: - I don't know if you've tried this, but keeping the float wet and clean is crucial to get it to 'flow' down the inside corners. Similar to what you were doing with the large plastic flat. Clean and wet. Give that a try maybe..?? 2) the same applies for the steel float when you are doing the later coats without the hemp in them. From what I can recal of my old plasterers I used to employ during Victorian terrace house restorations in Sydney in the eighties (Greeks and Italians) the trick is that the very surfce of the plaster is effectively a slurry, and what you are doing is pushing the slurry back and forth, the steel float scraping the top of any edges or humps, which then add to the 'slurry' and get pushed across the surface, filling in the micro holes and depressions. The trick is to move the flat QUICKLY and with as little pressure as possible to distibute the slurry. As the wet slurry hits a dryer patch of render, the water in bonds with the lime kin the surfce and the slurry suddenly thickens, and stayd stuck to the wall. If the slurry dries out too much, it sticks and draaaaaggggsss, making mess and potentially ripping off the plaster. So the TRICK is to balance the water content of the slurry. Too much water, it runs everywhere and you have no control. Too little and it sticks everywhere and you get big runs, dags and gouges as it 'catches'. What my old Greek plasterer used to do was use a sponge or a brush (maybe your pressure bottle?) and just **lightly** spray the wall ahead of the float's path. Not enough so the wall was dripping water. More like the first raindrops on a sheet of newspaper, if that image helps...? Obvioulsy, you eventually learn what the right look and feel of the slurry is - for you - and work with it like that. Hope that helps..??

Good day Guy. Watching you do the outside corners (I know you didn#t ask for advice but I wanted to share this anyway - it might help someone else...) I discovered a method of achieving a good degree of uniformity on the corner by using a damp (tea-)cloth (as the linen was a sturdy material which didnt tear). The cloth was basically held with both hands and pulled in both lateral directions whilst staying still in the bend hence compacting the plaster and forming it at the same time. I found the sponge mothod bought a degree of roughness to the surface which then needed more additional coats to achieve the degree of smoothness that I wanted. The great thing about this method was that I could create fairly large radii without having to worry (to much) about the uniformity. It came on its own - analogue to the strech tension applied. Accidentally rubbing your skin on a rough surface may be good for peeling but its not for me.
