1980 Lincoln Continental Mark VI
(5.8 liter 351 Windsor V8)
- Carbureted year 1980 only -
NOTE: Vehicle is in working progress and is a survivor first generation Panther Platform.
Proud owner of my 1980 Lincoln Continental Mark VI (5.8 liter 351 Windsor V8). The Legacy of this generation Mark is greatly undiscovered and under appreciated by many. The Lincoln Continental Mark VI was technology and beauty in motion from model years 1980-1983. It is my hope to be a valued resource for quality content and make evident why the Mark VI is a significant contributor to Lincolns rich history. Please read my debut blog titled - Lincoln Love:

Man, that was an cool and refreshing ride out. And I love how older cars have emblems out on front hood. Cruise on man.. cruise on. I’m an older car die hard. I own an 81 towncar coupe as I commented before. And I also have an 77 NewYorker and an 73 Chevy Caprice. I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s. Those were real built cars then. It’s ashamed that the cars nowadays you can thump a dent in them. Nice video.

Marc B , vehicle’s prior to the 90’ were a couch on wheels, but cars now are rolling appliances. after 1978 the New Yorker slightly downsized. The Caprice gave a great final effort before ending production with the black impala. Thanks again for watching and enjoy cruising around this summer.

Back in the early 80s when I was a teenager, my parents rented the 4-dr, the Town Car, and the Versailles (bustle back & pre-bustle back) just to go on family trips from Los Angeles to San Diego. I loved everything about those cars, the way the exterior looked, the cloth interiors, and especially the sound systems back then- it really sounded good when “Sailing” by Christopher Cross came on- LOL. And now, every once in a while whenever I see one of these cars, I remember those times fondly. Thanks for sharing your trip to Belle Isle. By the way, your car’s muffler sounds like my late aunt’s 70’s Olds Delta 88, which she named “Gracie”. That car was huge!

Since the recording of this video I have changed the exhaust, it’s much quieter now. Always something to maintain and repair, but that’s the charm. Owning a classic takes a loving touch. My Dad bought off the Showroom Floor a 1981 Model 2 tone Blue/Gray with Blue Leather interior & traded in his 1976 Ford Country Squire Wagon. My Dad's only Dislike about his 81 was the Many owners complaints was the Electronic Carburetor which was New for 1981 & by 1983 Model year Ford went back to the 79-80 Simple & Non-Problematic Carburetor. Otherwise My Dad absolutely loves his 81. My Dad is 93 yo now & still owns his 81 with 102.000 miles to Date, Been Garaged since New & in great condition. It's rarely Driven now But goes to same Lincoln Dealership as bought for Service once a year now. Wen my Dad does drive he drives his 20012 F250 that has 30.000 Miles

I had the Lincoln mark VI Bill Blass a 1982 coupe It was white with 2 tone colors red on the sides white leather and red integrated leather straps I had the Landau top making it look like a convertible so the oval opera windows were not present but made it quite private in the back. That was presented to me around 1995 in Chicago. Beautiful car they had black carpeting which Nicely coincided with the black carpeting Ford factory CB radio and an 8 track player Full digital dssh- and extra buttons.. The CB radio was integrated in to the radio speakers and the aerial also was AAM FMC B antenna factory amazing car had a lot of fun and it ran at to 300,000 miles. Not bed for throttle body 182 horsepower. The hood ornament was missing so I put on a gold Cadillac Sedan DE ville ornament it made people ask alot of questions but it looked pretty cool. One of my favorite cars but in this Chicago Winter the headlight covers would freeze shut if it got very cold. Ps. At the end of the video in the night time sceen, the very last frame it said mark 6,, was that from the computer control read out 3rd panel dashboard computer right square or was that on the passenger side wood facia etc? My friend let me drive his all silver Cartier version and my Uncle in Florida had an 82 bill blass with the gold to tone and blue with the mix of leather and cloth stitch seats love these cars too. My favorite was the black and silver Givenchy. The car was so much fun and classy to drive around do you enjoy it to and do you own it. The only sadness it had ever brought me was. I ran over a pedestrian the last year I owned the car, actually a little girl who was about six on her bicycle drove right over her in that car. It was dark night and I pulled out of This restaurant Really fast, and she rode along without looking for traffic.

your post is super engaging and i'm honored you took the time to share. your Mark VI was fully loaded and quite the color combination. any metal vehicle lasting that long in the Midwest is a miracle, wow! 300k. the Cadillac ornament really confused people, Ha ha! it's funny about the headlight doors too, because so many Mark owners are frustrated because they stay open. the ambient light at night reading MARK VI is from the passenger wood facia. I believe continental only did this for 1980, later models it was painted over silver. the light comes on when you start the car, and can only see it at night. I love cruising in my Mark VI, I've owned it since 2017. sad story you tell about the child, did she survive? these old cars don't have the best of road lighting and children need more traffic experience, especially if not with parents. well on a more positive note, I really appreciate you watching my video and commenting. That Lincoln is one of the nicest (If not the nicest) and most well kept early 80's cars I've ever seen. I agree that this generation (1980-1983) didn't enjoy much appreciation, but all things considered, the Mark VI moved Lincoln into modern territory with features like the 4 speed overdrive (a great improvement for 1980). If I had to chose a car from that year, I'd go for the Mark VI, and in a close second: a Mercury Grand Marquis, Ford LTD, Chevrolet Caprice or a M-body Chrysler LeBaron or Cordoba. It's good to see this Lincoln doing the thing it was designed for: to give comfortable transportation in a daily drive/weekend drive and not staying in a museum.

All the equipement are ok. She s got only 63 000 kilometers. I think this génération is very rare in europe, one of another 1980 lincoln continental Sedan with the 351w is in France because it was in selling in 2017. I think its a c/4 tranny though Classic wood paneling look ! Digital readouts for that year seemed way ahead of their time- therefore way cool. Nice car ! Luxury and beauty= Lincoln 👍

Ryan Sellars Thanks for sharing the details. Yes, the Mark VI was ahead of its time. 1980 was like a transitional year proving the newer transmission, but offering a choice of fuel injection or in my case carbureted. Hi Nice Mark VI I noticed your Trip Computer/Clock is not working. They had problems with them 80-83.If you go to any Auto Wrecker and find 83-89 Lincoln Town car with the Digital Dash, Its your control Module that is gone. Its located above the gas pedal next to Transmission Hump .There is 4 1/4 inch bolts and an electrical plug in. The 83-89 version is identical and improved Plug and Play. They are known as Ford Conquistador’s in Venezuela and they were hugely popular amongst kingpins, drug lords and politicians back in the day. My dad bought a 1980 model, full loaded, in 2002 because it literally was the first car he saw on the street when he moved to Venezuela and he fell in love with the style. Super comfortable and easy to drive, giant car and slow as hell. I never saw one with a digital dash though.

xrmerkur I have a ton more stories, my dad loved the Ford/Lincoln land yachts of the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. He actually got so upset when they anounced the discontinuation of the Panther platform that he cried. The only other time I saw him shed a tear was when my grandmother got sick and the doctors said she would not recover. Grans was very stubborn though, lived for another 15 years “just to prove the stuck up doctor wrong” lol.

Congratulations on your Mark VI! This was my first car..a 1982 Lincoln Mark VI Signature Series Coupe in French Vanilla with a Bordeaux Red velour interior. It was the smoothest riding car I have ever owned. The only major issues I had with it were with the transmission slipping. Other than that..smaller things like one of the digital displays going out..a loose door handle..and the headliner drooping. I still miss that car to this day..and am always looking for another affordable one..but all the good ones that were taken care of are usually now over $10k. I hope you keep restoring it..and that it gives you a lifetime of pleasure my friend. Take care!

+xrmerkur I will indeed keep checking..and if you do any more uploads on it that I don't comment on..please message me here. It's very cool to find another person into these specific cars that isn't over 60 or a low-rider..lol. Nothing against low-riders of course..but I've seen some beautiful Mark VI's turned into cartoon cars by them..so it's nice when someone just wants to keep them original and classy. By the way..one suggestion I have for you if you haven't done it already is to switch to full synthetic oil. It makes a huge difference..and you don't have to change it nearly as often. And if you start experiencing slippage from the transmission..try Lucas Transmission Fix. Take care brother!

I really can't decide between the V & VI. The V is a bit larger but the VI seems to have a better fit and finish if that makes sense? Too bad you can't find someone with a V to do a comparison video, I think you could make a good one!
@xrmerkur
@xrmerkur 4 года назад
Si vis pacem para bellum , terrific idea indeed. I will put the versus video on my to do list. I completely understand what you’re saying. The Mark V is more widely available and priced more consistent. The Mark VI is more rare with asking prices all over the place. Between the two the general car community loves the Mark V, but the Mark VI creates a two way conversion. (edit: Conversation) Because the VI is on the panther platform machanical parts are plentiful, but body panels are another story. Whatever you decide I hope you enjoy owning a classic as much as I have.

Larry Hawkins , I think it was all done to gradually transition us into smaller engines. From what I understand Ford has been dropping larger displacement ever since the later Mark V’s. Also I want to thank you for watching my video and engaging in conversation. Please check out my newest video about My Lincoln History.

Nicolas DeFranco , also detuning V8’s even up to the last generation Town Cars kept these vehicles reliable and some running well beyond 1/2 million miles. This is the biggest advantage to maximizing fuel economy. If you want maximum performance power you gotta buy a Mustang GT500.

Nicolas DeFranco , now with majority of vehicles being leased, the public focuses more on disposable technology and excitement. The thrill wears off within 3 years. The old Lincoln were like fine furniture meant to be appreciated for the life of ownership and future owners.

Bohemia Lite , every now and then I drop some fuel additive in the tank, but basically 87 octane. It’s carbureted, do you recommend something special for this 5.8 liter Windsor V8. I didn’t think the 351 ran on anything different than the fuel injected 302. Please advise???

The factory recommended that the 351 2V V8 use regular gas. But because of this car's age premium fuel is a good idea.
@xrmerkur
@xrmerkur 4 года назад
Larry Hawkins , I will more consistently use higher octane going forward. acceleration has never been a problem on 87 octane, but it could use some massaging during idle. Sometimes I have to give it a couple extra throttle kicks to bring the idling down. That’s even after I’ve driven it a while too. The weather has an effect on it some days.

fuel consumption is one of the realities when owning an American luxury from this era and prior. my Mark VI has the higher displacement (only available for the year 1980). when driving in and around the city you can expect at least 10MPG. fuel economy improves generously on freeways and highways, but of course still low. I definitely keep a gas can in my trunk and a fully charged cell phone. Samiy, do you have a classic? What is your absolute favorite dream car?

rick davis , 2020 Detroit is on pause just like the rest of America and much of the world. I’d encourage you to check out how the Motor City resumes after the pandemic is over. I graciously thank you for watching my video. Possibly we both share a love for the Continental. Detroit made beautiful cars for generations but have now halted production for volunteers of the auto industry to manufacture ventilators and respirators. We want to be part of the solution. Live well and please be safe!

Love how it has all that gimmicky electronic gauges yet still has a carburator under the hood. Benz, BMW, Jaguar etc had fuel injection on their cars for quite a few years by the time 1980 rolled around.

Aaron Smith very true. this was like the transition year. believe it or not this was the first year you could also option for fuel injection. Is there a dream classic you’re planning to park in your garage some day?
