1980 Lincoln Continental Mark VI
(5.8 liter 351 Windsor V8)
- Carbureted year 1980 only -
INTERIOR VIDEO RECORDED AUTUMN 2018
NOTE: Vehicle is in working progress and is a survivor first generation Panther Platform.
Proud owner of my 1980 Lincoln Continental Mark VI (5.8 liter 351 Windsor V8). The Legacy of this generation Mark is greatly undiscovered and under appreciated by many. The Lincoln Continental Mark VI was technology and beauty in motion from model years 1980-1983. It is my hope to be a valued resource for quality content and make evident why the Mark VI is a significant contributor to Lincolns rich history.

I remembered these beautiful land yachts brand new. The 351 2v, was torque superior over the 302 f.i. but, it ran out of STEAM too soon on the highway. Especially in overdrive.
@xrmerkur
@xrmerkur 5 лет назад
Papo Cam , the transmission was relatively a new design at the time also, so if the torque converter was computerized like today’s cars they might have been able to manage the power better. But I’m really impressed by your familiarity with this vehicle Papo Cam. Thanks for your contributions.

A small drop in power from 166 HP in the 6.6 to 129 HP in the 5.0, or 145 HP in the 5.8..the Mark VI deserved the accolades from its 41% reduction in fuel consumption, but 1980-1981 was a tough time in the market with snow flurries and inflation. I respect the VI more than the Mark V, but I love both. Criminally Underated, in my opinion. I Love the time you've taken to ensure your video exudes the great thinking that went into these machines. And I'm a diehard 351 Windsor and AOD lover. FoMoCo killed it off because of 1 mpg of adjusted City/ Hwy CAFE, not because it wasn't able to pass emissions or highway mpg figures. For 1981, Congress changed the aggregate CAFE calculation, so HFII decided, all full size passenger cars except for Police Interceptors, we're gonna lose the 351W and the 351M and 400 were promised gone for 1983 in trucks and SUVs. They added a four catalyst 5.8 HO 2bbl V.V. variety for lucky Canadian and US Cop cars, which made practically the same highway Mpg figure as the 255 and 5.0 and standard performance 5.8. But 1 mpg less in City. For just the sake of a mpg , Ford killed the option off for civilian use. Have a great day. 🥝✔️

I didn't realize that the mirrors weren't power in 1980, my '83 Mark VI has power mirrors. I also find it odd that yours like mine doesn't have autolamp or auto dim. Most Mark VI's I've seen have it but I've seen my fair share of photos of those without it. I do really like how the Mark VI on the passenger dash lights up. I know after 1981 some stuff started to go away, like the glovebox flashlight, the lower woodgrain trim on the doors and the factory toolkit. I've even seen a few that had trunk carpet as nice as the interior carpet. I really like those Lincoln emblems in the rear seats, mine are just embroidered in. The white/red is also my favorite interior combo, I missed out on a '78 Town Coupe last spring that was dark green with a green/white leather interior I really liked that one too.
@xrmerkur
@xrmerkur 2 года назад
yes, i believe in 1980 only the highest trim levels had the additional power equipment and advanced settings. but as far as extra chrome ornamentation and wood, the 1980 had the most of all the years standard.

Beautifully shrunken, Cleveland or Windsor, the 351cid should have had either fuel injection or a 4V carburetor. I'm certain the 4spd o/d automatic would have made this luxo quite sporty. The larger engine was for more torque over the smaller engine. I mean neither was like the 460cid 4v. Que sera, sera. Ford did an excellent job in decreasing the size to the point where ppl @ 1st couldn't tell til they got up close. When LINCOLN'S were Still awesome. I shall miss em, new LINCOLNS with turbos, 6cylinders, but, still with a 6spd automatic, while even ecoboxes have MORE gears. No going back now.

I know its an old car now and cars were more mechanical in the 80's, but compared to what Ford Australia was putting out back then, this car is one part more feature rich but equally more clunky and unrefined. Nothing has a nice tactile feel to it and everything in the cabin is ritzed up but quite crude and sounds it in operation.
@xrmerkur
@xrmerkur 3 года назад
The unrefined nature of 80’s luxury was part of its charm. Today vehicles have a better fit to finish, but are easily disposable upon damage and wear. Back then virtually any decent mechanic could repair like new, but today totaled out for the simplest accidents. Manufacturing has changed along with the elegance of the iPhone. Once the iPhone sealed the battery, so much engineering today uses glue and snap together. Technology and elegance is supreme these days.

1911beauty , with so much tech inside all vehicles these days you’re really naked without a warranty. If anything a Lease is the only way to keep up with the advancement of connectivity. Back when the Mark VI was the latest in transportation the electronics complimented the car, and wasn’t trying to stream or GPS anything. Just clean simple features.

You couldn't find a a better 8-track tape sample? A Boz Scaggs or Doobie Brothers 8-track would have been more fitting for this car. It's also a quadraphonic 8track player which is rare in cars. This is the first I've seen of an Mark VI 8-track player without the Premium Sound amplifier.

Quad8track ,Ha Ha! Love your comment🤣. Funny thing is I only have the Doobie Brothers on CD and digital download. At the time of recording this video a Learning Spanish 8-Track was the only one on hand. My 1980 Mark VI is the rarest of the rare. Manufactured in November 1979 before small tweaks were made, and without keyless entry. I’m excited the original audio system still works. Also if you notice there’re no speakers in the lower doors. I’ve never seen a Mark VI like this either. The closest I’ve seen was one exactly but with the 302 V8. Thanks for watching and giving me a lesson on musical taste. I hope you have a special car with an 8-Track too. Please tell me about it!

Why did Continental turn the Mark 6 into a sedan?? And they put a Fairmont steering wheel in It?
@xrmerkur
@xrmerkur 5 месяцев назад
History shows much parts bin was exercised with ford in the 70’s and 80’s. The Continental was built on the Panther Platform and was trying to consolidate every Lincoln on it. I guess they couldn’t resist up staging the Town Car trim. Note: that steering wheel was also used in the Thunderbird and many other Ford and Mercury vehicles too.

302 engines weren't that economical. That's why I never understood why they stopped producing the 351 in civilian passenger cars. GM did the same thing with the 350 in 1980.
@xrmerkur
@xrmerkur 4 года назад
ChevKen , I think they were trying to appease the people reluctant to change with this carbureted option, because the fuel injected 302 was new. Ford shrink the Mark and went all in with technology, so I guess they had to leave something familiar. Smaller cars and engines was the theme of the 80’s. Thanks much for checking out my video and leaving a comment. I also have newer uploads available on my channel. Check them out!😁

In the early 80s Detroit was struggling to meet emission standards since the mid 70s so they went into creative solutions for it like FI. The 351 came about in very troubled times economically so ford simply did not bother and just began decontenting the TC as the 80s progressed.

The 351 wasn't as fuel efficient as the 302 and all you gained in 1980 was an extra 10hp, it just wasn't worth the loss in mpg for a lot of people. GM kept using the 350 in at least certain Oldmobiles and Cadillacs until the early-mid 90's. They also kept it in the caprice until at least the mid 80's.
@kylemichaels3373
@kylemichaels3373 2 года назад
@@MrCarguy2 The 351 was nowhere near new in 1980 and Ford certainly did not decontent the Town Car in the 80's, there are no options on an early 80's TC that weren't available in the late 80's. In fact late 80's cars added self leveling suspension and a CD player among other options. The 96-97 cars were extremely loaded, moreso than my 2001 was, and the 03-06 or 07ish cars were also extremely loaded. By 2009 you couldn't even get air suspension anymore and for 1990 up that's what really made a Town Car a Town Car.

It's Ders Mane , they infused just about everything in this car from the digital dash to the electronically controlled carburetor. even though technology was exercised plenty in this generation, the engine relied heavily on vacuum hoses and mechanical components. Sadly, the Mark VI, design was quite unattractive compared to the prior Marks with it's boxy styling and upright windshield. Also, for it to share the same platform with the Town car and offer a 4 door model was just a really bad idea. In hindsight, Ford should have used the 1979 Thunderbird/Cougar XRY chassis/body and gussied it up with the new electronics and 4 speed auto and left this new body just for the Town Car.
@xrmerkur
@xrmerkur 2 года назад
Very interesting perspective Vicious Poodle. You have to put this design in context of what Ford needed to achieve at the time, and needed to achieve quickly. The Panther was introduced with the 1979 LTD and went on as the most successful platform in history. It wouldn’t be until 1981 before Town Car would be it’s own vehicle, prior the Town Car was just a trim level even before the panther platform. It was the Mark VI and Continental to first utilize this generation in 1980. For 1981 Continental would hiatus just to return on the Fox platform in 1982. Ford truly worked a miracle at the time considering both Cadillac and Chrysler was quickly downsizing even before the 80’s. Mark VI was reduced bumper to bumper, but not as drastic as its competitors. I greatly respect your opinion about the formal roof and overall proportions, but many agree this was a masterpiece for the 80’s. Thanks for watching and sharing your comment.

@@xrmerkur You're welcome. My reference to the Lincoln Continental was as calling it a Lincoln Town Car. I do remember when the cars first came out how disappointed I was that the Mark used the Panther platform and other than the end caps, the Mark and Town Cars were basically the same car. Historically from 69 to 79 they were on different platforms. I also thought the Continental/Town car was the better looking of the two and ended up being a more successful. They moved the Lincoln Continental name to so many platforms I can keep track of it. I totally forgot about the Fairmont based Lincoln Continental (which really should have been the Versailles). And Ford didn't have the money to hide the windshield wipers on that car either! 70's models were the best!

That would be a subjective opinion, as some of us love the size of the Marv VI, and I for one especially loved that it was a more manageable size, but retained that "chiseled from granite" Lincoln look that made it so iconic. My family had both a Mark III and a Mark V - I loved the look of them but absolutely hated driving them. They were just too big. This Mark VI has always seemd to me to be a severely underrated car for what it was at the time.
@viciouspoodle5543
@viciouspoodle5543 2 года назад
@@RitzyTrailerII For some reason people loved the Town Car version better. That was a huge success and would probably still be selling today if they didn't stop production. The panther Town Car outsold the iconic 1970's Lincoln Continental. People just didn't like the Mark VI.

What a nice car. But the heater A/C is semi-automatic, not automatic. Meaning the air temperature is automatic, but the fan speed is manually set. I think it was 1984 or 1985 when it became automatic, for the Town Car. The Mark VI was basically a fancier Town Car. The 1980 - 1983 Mark Vi, and the 1980 - 1984 Town Car were my favorite cars of the 1980's. In 1985 the Town Car had a facelift, but I liked the 1980 - 1984 style better.
