A Washington state civil rights advocate and educator, Dolezal resigned her post as president of the Spokane chapter of the NAACP on Monday amid reports she falsely identified as black. The controversy began when Dolezal’s parents told reporters their daughter is white, and shared photographs of her as a child. On Tuesday, Dolezal broke her silence, saying she has identified as black since a young age. We host a roundtable discussion with four guests: Stacey Patton, senior enterprise reporter for The Chronicle of Higher Education; Lacey Schwartz, producer/director of the documentary film "Little White Lie"; Linda Martín Alcoff, professor of philosophy at the City University of New York and author of several books; and Jelani Cobb, associate professor of history and director of the Africana Studies Institute at the University of Connecticut.

***** (1) race is not looked at in the same way as sexuality and gender identification (as a trans-woman). And we all know this already so why ask the question? (2) Rachel Dolezal used deception to get what she wanted while Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner openly declared what s/he is doing. And again, we all know this already. Since we know this already, that "person you know" is being disengenuous.

Culturally she can be or become whomever she wishes. It's obvious she made those decisions long ago. She's obviously white by race and living as a black woman. There's nothing wrong with her holding her position at the university or with NAACP. But she should be truthful from the get go. Her parents seem to have their own issues

Would it have been better if she was honest by saying "Hey America, I want to be Black, now let me live my life how I want to"??????? Seriously, what's the crime here? Her parents are evil, that's why their little girl left home. So the White girl has some soul. Big deal. I got soul, are you going to make me quit my job?

The problem is racism, we humans don't belong to different races; we might have different skin color, come from different corners of the planet but, if you must use the word "race" we all are the human race. Now, while her skin and her background are white at some point she became culturally black and when in this sense she claims to be black I am not going to disagree, she is black. Hopefully she knows she is not alone.
