I lost even more respect for the 'news.' She says that black women don't understand what she has been through. The authentic black women don't understand what the pretend black woman has been through? She started identifying with being black at age 5. What experience could she have felt by age 5 as a white girl living in Spokane with 2 white parents?

Joseph Mays well, she grew up with crazy religious parents...that is pretty traumatic. does it mean she has experienced blackness? what does that even mean? im so fuckn tired of black ppl playing the victim. its not a war on blacks, it is a war on middle/lower class ppl. what most blacks call racism is really just bigotry. it doesnt really matter though, the only group black ppl can blame for keeping them down is black ppl themselves. too much effort went into explaining baltimore, that event alone created a significant number of racists, because they dont like "black people" burnign their business down and then justifying it, so this group is creating their own obstacles to hurdle. what is really funny is how there was little opposition to her position until her race changes, now she is not? that is racist....heheheheeh!

That’s BS! Melissa failed to ask the hard questions. This is not a case of Passing and Transracialism. This is about unethical and unlawful behavior. Had Rachel been a Trans woman but never told anyone she was Trans, spewed lies about being born a biological woman, openly discussed naturally developing breasts at puberty and experiencing menstruation by the age of 13 yrs old everyone would be in an uproar. If the Trans woman that never said she was Trans took positions designed specifically for disadvantaged minorities like women then the world would have exploded. Melissa failed miserably.

Personally, I do not feel that she is a black woman. I say this for the sheer simple reason that she could, if she wanted to, wash the perm out of her hair and wash off the tanner and revert to a white person. A REAL BLACK PERSON could not revert to another race. THAT BEING SAID, I support her work and everything she has done for the black community. She has done more for the black community that a lot of black people have done for our community. I feel that she also has had the "black person experience" with raising black children and being immersed in our culture. But just because you have experienced with "black person experiences", that doesn't mean you are black. I have no problem with her identifying with black culture but to say she is black I would have to disagree.
@charmainedaisley4685
@charmainedaisley4685 9 лет назад
Cassie Telusma I have no problem with her saying she's black, because identity is not only external, it is an internal thing and shaped by what you've experienced or seen others experience. I do have a problem with her lying though, but in the spirit of humanity, I am willing to forgive her. And yes, I agree with you that she has done more for black people than many black people themselves have done (including black stars with billions of dollars)!!! The thing is too, we keep killing our own brothers and sisters with guns and illegal drugs, but we're hating on a white woman who is dedicated to help black people up? Well, I'll take that any day than a black woman choosing not to help a sister up in life because she wants to be among the few successful black women in the world!
@cassietelusma4993
@cassietelusma4993 9 лет назад
Charmaine Daisley I agree with the fact we can accept her into the black community. And it is perfectly okay for her identify as a black person. But she isn't a black person. She could just switch back to being a white person if she truly felt like it. I, as a black woman, do not have that possibility. I agree it was also wrong for her to lie to everyone about her race. I am also willing to forgive her but she has to first admit she was wrong.
@charmainedaisley4685
@charmainedaisley4685 9 лет назад
Cassie Telusma, I think we can agree to disagree on some points in this discussion, but the overwhelming sentiment is that people should have the choice to identify as who they want. Why are we being the race police while our black sisters don blonde wigs, blue contact lenses and use skin lightening creams, all in an effort to get jobs and positions that are socially more accessible to mostly white women or light-skinned black women? These black women are passing as white!! If more black women owned their blackness by wearing their natural hair, at least, then MAYBE they could cry foul. Until then, we have to understand why people on both sides do what they do.
@cassietelusma4993
@cassietelusma4993 9 лет назад
Latonya Wilson When I say she has done a lot more for black people, I meant that she has done more for black people than some black people have done for their own community. Not all black people do nothing for their own community but there are a lot who haven't done anything at all. Now to say she only has done things to advance her self proclaimed blackness I feel is incorrect. She may have genuinely trying to change things for the better for the black race. You probably don't know her just as I don't know her so neither one of us can say exactly what her motives were. But regardless of her motives, she did do good for the black community to which I commend her for.

I have actually seen this behavior exhibited by two different people, coincidentally both women. I am an ASL interpreter, I have been professionally certified since 1990. There was a woman who claimed to be deaf; she signed all the time, made the same sounds as profoundly deaf people do while signing. The problem is she was hearing; her hearing was perfect. A second person gave a moving, tearful speech about the horrors of cancer; chemo, a death sentence, depression, etc. Problem is, she never had cancer. Both had deep psychological issues like Mrs. Dolezal. If there is a white privilege (there is not) I can see no better example of it than being so arrogant that you can pretend to understand blackness and discrimination and make up faux hate crimes and somehow become "black."

The WHY is more important- acting like a victim, or a marginalized group gets you attention or sympathy in some way. A lot of whites are jealous of blacks because they get attention for their struggle when they are victimized, so many whites want that kind of attention and sympathy for themselves, to experience it. They don’t understand what true love is- they think sympathy and playing victim will get them love, but it is far far away from that. True love is empowered and empowering, not disempowered and actively seeking a victim identity

I don't know what I think of this. The parallels between transgenderism are vast. I accept transgendered people, but this throws me through a loop. My brain just keeps saying, of course shes not black, it doesn't work like that. Identifying as black and actually being black are two different things. But the same can be said about being transgendered, or can it? I'm confused. This brings up a very interesting subject nonetheless.
@ExclusiveLM
@ExclusiveLM 9 лет назад
SkitterNSnicklez Well that transgender issue is more clear cut because Bruce Jenner has never denied being a man that thinks like a woman. Rachel thinks black but denies her race. She should say I'm white but feel black instead of this nonsense.
@SkitterNSnicklez
@SkitterNSnicklez 9 лет назад
ExclusiveLM Isn't by saying that skin color determines a persons identity, we're assuming that identity is dictated by race? I think if we really want to abolish racism, a persons race shouldn't be taken into account when referring to a persons cultural background. I agree, she's not biologically "black", but I don't think that should be the point. She grew up culturally identifying with a group of people. "Black" has become the word used to refer to a culture as well as a race. I don't think she means it in the way that she's black as in her race.

@macgeek2004
@macgeek2004 9 лет назад
SkitterNSnicklez A few points: 1.) This has nothing to do with "transgenderism," and there are, in fact, no parallels between Dolezal's case and transgender issues. There are actual, substantive, and _physical_ differences between men and women. People who are transgender aren't transgender because they all of a sudden "feel like identifying as a member of the opposite gender," it's because, due to some sort of physical issue, such as nonstandard uterine environments or genetic abnormalities causing the person to essentially be born in a male body but with a female brain and hormones (or vice versa), or even just hormone issues, etc., they actually *are* females born with male bodies and vice versa, and the science has born this out. ...which leads me to my second point. 2.) The above is simply not true about race. Race is merely a social construct. There is literally no difference between the brain of a black person and the brain of a white person. After all, throughout history, race was determined by one's skin color, not by one's mental abilities. To attempt to reason that Dolezal's case is anything even _remotely_ similar to that of a transgender person's is to say that there actually IS a difference between the races that lies deeper than skin color and, due to some sort of genetic/environmental abnormality, Dolezal was somehow "born with a black brain" even though she has a white body due to "white genetics." I hope it doesn't need to be (further) pointed out just how absurd this is. 3.) The other GLARING difference between Dolezal's case and those of transgender people and that transgender people aren't _lying_ -- they are actually being more open and telling the _truth_ about themselves -- whereas Dolezal is, was, has, and continues to LIE in pursuit of this issue. A transgender person isn't lying by saying that they are men born with women's bodies and vice versa, but when Dolezal attempted to pass as black and hide her true origins, she actually WAS hiding her race. 4.) Dolezal *_CHOSE_* to identify, disguise herself, and pass as black. For her, this was a CHOICE. For _Actual_ black people, it is not. Mrs. Dolezal could've -- at ANY point -- stopped getting her perms and tans, and started acting and dressing as her actual self again. Most _actual_ blacks do not have this escape route. Now, while it _could_ be argued that it was actually kind of admirable of her to shed her "white privilege" and not make use of this escape route available to her, she did not have to constantly and consistently lie to attain her goals (except for, you know, when she get herself admitted in to Howard University on a scholarship meant specifically for actual black people -- she probably actually DID have to lie [as she had] for that one), and these lies not only caused damage to black people and their communities, but she effectively deprived them of a true ally, a statement more powerful than just another black person standing up for their rights.
@SkitterNSnicklez
@SkitterNSnicklez 9 лет назад
macgeek2004 I understand where you're coming from, but while there may be scientific evidence to support transgenderism, there are also a huge amount of transgendered people who actually are the gender they were assigned to at birth, but just want to identify as the opposite. A born normal healthy male, who wants to identify as a woman for example. Honestly I don't think it should matter either way, I don't care how people want to identify. It's none of my business to tell them what to do and how to act if they're not harming anyone. I was referring to that type of transgendered person. I know there are huge differences between Mrs. Dolezal and transgendered people who were actually born the wrong gender. It's my fault for generalizing. I actually went through a period where I was struggling with my gender identity so I'm just trying to relate in the way I know how to. Also, I'd like to note that there's a lot more to transgenderism than just binary genders. Maybe you misunderstood me, but I was trying to say what you said yourself, that there's no difference between races except skin color. I feel bad that I must have done such a poor job of making that clear.

This woman went around accepting money for speeches and lying about her "black experience." She hurt her real family by denying them for many years. No one has a problem with her being white or embracing black culture....the problem is that she lied. Her lies about her race and financial background allowed her to receive a full scholarship into a HBCU, (that scholarship could have been for another underprivileged, African American kid). Her lies about "struggling to be a black woman" made a complete mockery of the arduous experiences that black women really face.The lies were just insulting. In my opinion she can't be trusted to be up front about anything... She ran around saying that a black man was her "dad" then said the white man was her "father". And that any man can be a "father" but that this black man was her "dad" and that it takes a lot more to be a dad. In the reporters interview where she ran off she was asked if the white man was her father and she said "yep, that's my dad" So, the white man is once again her "dad" ? Soo many contradictions. Discrimination comes in many forms. And after Trump was in office, police brutality against black people became disastrously high. This is not new, in fact Buddhism alone is more than 500 years older than Christianity which is widely accepted in the West. I am not personally condoning what she did. She drew pictures of herself as a child as "black" and just chiming in another perspective that anyone who is not a Christian who believes in the concept of reincarnation might consider she was a another race in a previous lifetime. However, the way she went about her identity issue was totally wrong and lacks integrity. The greater message here though is if anyone believes in Reincarnation they will understand they have been multiple races and cultures. Therefore racism should not exist but it does because people hold onto physical and cultural identity so much. But talk to a Buddhist or a Hindu and they will give you a very different answer than a North American Christian. Open the mind to learn and you will have more access to different people with many different perspectives, not just your own.

I could only watch up 1:11 Liberalism didn't cause this sort of bizarre behavior. Liberalism condones it. Instead of acknowledging that mutilating your genitalia and taking hormone pills is a sign of mental illness, liberals call it brave and force feed it to the rest of society. The contradiction in liberal logic has seen Rachel Dolezal chastised for identifying as something she's not. I don't understand the root cause of both examples. It's an ugly term some use that describes a white person who identifies completely with the black experience. She said she is black meaning she has embraced & adopted the cultural experience & identity of black people which is not the same as claiming to have come from the African race. Many people of color commit much of their energy trying to look, talk & act in any way to neutralize their obvious non whiteness but for some reason that hasn't made front page news. Whites say she needs therapy & blacks would say the same to a black person who identifies solely with white culture. The reality is this divide between the races has damaged all of us to some extent.
