Line 18: UK's housing crisis won't be solved by more homes

Sky News research suggests the government's plan to build hundreds of thousands of new homes is unlikely to solve the housing crisis.
The problem is far more complex than a simple shortage of houses, which is confined to London and the South East. In some other areas, communities are shrinking or the housing stock simply isn't up to the job.
As part of the Sky News Line 18 series, Sky's economics editor Ed Conway looks into the state of the UK housing stock.

I don’t really comment, however this really annoyed me. I live in London where the council have sold the majority of land to international property developers. They build big apartment complexes and sell/rent them at prices, working class people cannot afford. For example, a 1 bedroom apartment for £300,000. People can not afford these places and they cannot afford to move, and they rather be cramped in houses. If the council were more considerate of the people who live in London, issues like this wouldn’t happen. Oh and btw, these property developers are complaining these apartments they have built are empty but they refuse to decrease the price. So, it’s not like there aren’t places in London - it’s that people cannot afford them!

@freebeerfordworkers
@freebeerfordworkers 5 лет назад
In 1997 I was responsible for the maintenance of social housing with oversight of about 7500 units. All modern and about 15% of the estate was “voids” and when I asked the manager why he said; “We are in a declining market”. We were, I demolished 30+ vandalized houses and single person flats because there was no point renovating them to add to our empty stock. So on my beat we had just short of 1200 houses and flats literally going begging. This surplus was not confined to Manchester and existed in several other city’s with the possible exception of London which has always differed from the rest of England and Wales. Of course all social commentators scream, "It's Thatchers fault for selling all the Council houses!" They are blissfully ignorant of the actual reason Thatcher’s government pushed the sale of Council houses. Selling them was economic common sense because the cost of modernising 50-year-old Council houses was more than new build. In shifting the cost to the new owners she was not selling off an asset but disposing of a liability. Back then we had all the social housing we needed and then some. One of the reasons we have people sleeping on the streets is because the common lodging houses crudely called doss houses were phased out in the 1980s. We had that many empty flats the residents were encouraged to take up vacant flats For over 60 years governments have used the birthrate to forecast education and housing requirements. This gives five years warning of education needs in any area and allows them to plan accordingly while feeding the figures through gives notice of housing requirements. The question is did they stop looking at the birthrate or has something happened in the late 1990’s to throw their calculations completely out? Now what could that be?

Part of the problem is the UK planning system. It's a pain in the arse for developers to actually build houses as it can take them years to get permission for schemes. It has to be relaxed. Additionally, if the government reduced corporation and income tax for areas outside London, such as Cardiff, Leeds, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Glasgow etc, then firms would move offices further north to take advantage of the tax incentives, taking people and jobs with them which will reduce the house prices down south

That Scottish man who lives in the last terrace house made me want to give him a hug, he must be so lonely. The man with a big house shouldn’t feel anything, the area he’s in doesn’t have enough demand so the issue isn’t in his area but in Liverpool and London. The densely populated areas need to build up. We don’t have to spread out.

Building more houses will not solve the housing crisis. The "affordable homes" that have been built are for those who can afford to buy a house, and they are most certainly in the minority. Many of these new builds are bought to let, with some individuals owning several houses in the same new developement. Greed, greed, and more greed. People renting the new builds are paying more per month in rent than they would have to pay for a mortgage on the same house, which contributes to keeping homeownership just out of their grasp. The Tory government are doing their best to return Britain to the days of slum housing and no NHS, and completely trash the wonderful things that Labour did for the people of this country.

I don’t think the older man should feel guilty about anything. He worked for his money and now he’s enjoying it. No shame in that. AND his taxes pay for social services so he really has no reason to feel guilty. Plenty of room for his grandkids to sleepover 🤷🏽‍♀️

A lot of what people are saying here in the comments might be true, but nobody mentions the fact that globalization is also a big factor in this crisis. Many people are moving to the big cities, leaving their hometown behind - this creates a demand for housing in big cities and leave homes empty in the country side. It's not a UK problem, it's a global problem - the question is, should big cities grow rapidly or should we try to stop globalization?

Why are all these immigrants coming to the UK to live in these tiny crowded rooms rather than live in their own country. How bad was it for them to think living in one room with a family is better than where they were before. Theres alot to this story that will take too long to report here. Not entirely sure why the main focus people in the comments is to praise the old rich man and not question the hell these other families are going through or have been through in their old country and why they feel better living in such horrid conditions.

Because for example a Pole can work in the UK for just five years, live in a smallish room for that time, and save enough money to go back home and BUY a house OUTRIGHT. Obviously if we Brits could live in a room in Poland and work for just 5 years and come back to Blighty and buy a house, there would be 10 million of us there and the Polish would say how hard-working and humble British migrants are. But that ain't gonna happen, because the EU isn't a level playing field.

The title is misleading. In other countries people already knew that there are shrinking regions, where infrastructure is getting too expensive too keep and housing is more than enough. That doesn't change the fact that building a lot more homes in and around London would help to improve the situation there. Trying to make other regions more attractive for businesses can help in the long run, but is very hard to achieve, because attractive cities keep getting more and more of the economic pie.

About 11% of UK homes - 2 or more beds - are inhabited by people who are old and single. A Government with a brain would look at opportunities for them to WANT to move and downsize.

Answer: land value tax! Smaller homes would pay more than bigger(couze less people on land than in tall building) that would lead to building taller buildings with more apartmants

Solve it? With enough housing for everybody, there would be no inflated prices! Can't accept that can´t we, a lot of rich people depend on the poor to pay large amount of money on rent, and interest on their real estate loan.

The government insists on enforcing a central building solution of build build build based on clever desk statisticians and technology. The problems would be far easier solved to give each local authority autonomy to make decisions on new builds and investment. Yes some areas may need thousands of new homes, others need investment to refurbish existing stock but go back to basics and let each council plan for their own area and just maybe the right levels of housing could be achieved for all

It’s happening in America more so than there. Our problem is greed. Investors are buying up older homes and apartments turning them into luxury living facilities. My wealthy new neighborhood has large new homes that empty for the past 3 years. LLC’s are buying up the properties and letting them sit as they begin to immediately appreciate in value. An average buyer cannot compete in this market. It should be illegal. Affordable housing is a no go in Florida. DeSantis isn’t addressing the issue at all.
