This video is Part 1 of line boring and bore welding a Caterpillar 730 Articulated Dump Truck A-frame that has a badly worn eye causing the bushing to be loose. We are using our Sir Meccanica WS2 portable in-line boring and bore welding machine. First we need to remove a seized bolt on the A-frame footing before removing 3 broken bolts that hold the retaining plate to the eye. We then use the Sir Meccanica centering device to set the bearing mounts for positioning the line boring machine. The eye position has been so badly worn and bolt holes damaged that we need to line bore out a huge amount of damaged material and bore out to the depth of the bolt holes. We position and tack weld a run off ring to the eye, hand weld to fill the bolt holes before line boring again to give a clean surface ready for the bore welding in Part 2!

That’s been loose for a long time to be that flogged, that should have been picked up in the daily or weekly service and inspection of the machine. Some operators, and I use operator very loosely in this case, are too precious to climb under a machine or get their hands dirty.
@MattysWorkshop
@MattysWorkshop 3 года назад
Gday, I’d say that was rooted, obviously the operator didn’t give a shit cause you would have felt it floggin up and down but more then likely told to just drive it, I don’t think you would be far off in the 9kg of weld guess, I wish I lived closer to see this in process done in person, one day I might get up there and have a look hopefully, can’t wait to see part 2 mate, throughly enjoyed watching, cheers Matty

I agree! I had a customer who constantly pulled this crap until he brought me a part that was no longer available. I called around to find out what the new one would have cost if one was available. Of course he lost it. "I can buy a new one for less than that!" Of course I invited him to do so, which then he admitted there aren't any available. "So you got a deal, you brought me a pile of crap and I return to you a fully functional part ready to be used. Next time bring it to me for routine service and will cost you but a fraction! @@CuttingEdgeEngineering Kurtis what is involved in making up complete swap over parts for something like that? Is there the option to go from just repair work to fabrication of components?

I can do it right, I can do it cheap, I can do it fast....choose any two! Hope you got a premium price for a rush job! Holy smokes...might have been easier to just saw the thing off and weld on a whole new eye...daggum

I was beginning to wonder about that option myself. Getting the alignment right in the three or more dimensions could be tricky.

Just watched this video for a second time, I simply cannot believe that the bearing housing was allowed to get so worn, and another thing is the turn around time your client expected. Bloody good show Kurtis on how you went about getting that pigs ear sorted!

On the bright side, if you asked the customer to "keep an eye on the bearing clearances..." it might mean less business. Fantastic job bringing the old back to better than new.

Some of those are design flaws. They don't use big enough parts for the use it gets. They use a pin with a grease hole in the center that breaks or the self aligning bushing is too hard and it breaks from impact.

Not a welder or machinist, just trying to learn: why wouldn't you be able to sleeve this after boring, instead of welding the bore back to size?
@billslack1879
@billslack1879 3 года назад
would work for a while but then fail as there is not enough meat on the outer diameter to hold it for long. economics come into play here. been a farmer for 50 years and make and fix my own gear. when you haven,t got gear like kurtis you can come up with lots of alternative fixes
@CuttingEdgeEngineering

Hey mate fair question. We would never sleeve a job, personally don't consider it an adequate quality repair. They are prone to fail, as mentioned here lack of structural integrity plays a part too.
