Just a quick video discussing the differences between a liner pond and a natural pond. Liner ponds are easy to achieve crystal, clear water. Unlined ponds it's more difficult.
In the video I mentioned another video that talks about how the bacteria work to keep a pond clean and clear. Here it is if you're interested. • Pond filtration| Cryst...

Hi Kev, brilliant video thanks. I have a huge pond 20x30 meters. Do you think if I line with plants and put water lilies on top it will be clean enough to swim in? Thanks
@Ozponds
@Ozponds 9 месяцев назад
Maybe. Lots of variables. Plus it depends on what you are willing to accept. When I was a kid I swam in everything! Your clarity might not be great but doesn’t mean the water isn’t alive and healthy. If you are worried get it tested 👍

Hey 👋 Kev, question for you. I have asked a few channels, but am failing to get a clear answer. Here in the states we have small bags of river rocks. They are more convenient as they come in a plastic bag that I can handle without having to shovel and cary in a bucket. I have been painstakingly removing the sharp broken pieces as I am afraid to get a puncture. So my question is this; if I have fabric above and beneath a 45mil liner, should I be considered with removing sharp pieces? Mind you this is to fill in between level boulders already set in the pond. I hope this makes sense and appreciate everything you do!

Obviously it’s a risk/ reward situation that you personally need to weigh up. On my dream pond I used a rock called scoria, it’s quite sharp. I sandwiched the liner between the geo-textile, no far no issues for me.

I love ALL of your vdo's and have watched all of them multiple times! Thank you for doing this. Wish I could transport you to Thailand to help me with my pond! I have a 6 x 8 x 1 meter deep natural earthen pond with no liner for my 20 ducks and 7 geese, no fish. The water has turned green. They are still swimming happily in it - but I just wanted to find the best and economical way to keep the water cleaner and not green without using a liner and possibly without a filtration system, if possible (?) You say that the single cell algae need more surface - can I add more aeration to the pond and then some stones / rocks to the sides and bottom - and then some diatoms weekly? Do you think that this will help? I have tried to add a variety of plants to the pond such as water hyacinth, duck weed and water spinach - the ducks ate them all up in a matter of seconds! Vetiver grass along the edges of the pond is the only thing they're not eating. The problem is they grow much too fast and we can hardly see the pond now! I feel like ripping them all out and start all over again. Any suggestion you can provide will be much appreciated.

Clay lined is very hard, so is ducks and geese. Basically your main issue is too many nutrients being added to the pond. It’s like trying to outrun a bad diet, if you eat bad food all the time it’s very hard to exercise your way to weight loss. Therefore your first thing to do is reduce the number of animals using the pond.

Do you have any experience with bentonite clay? I.e would a bentonite clay pond be more like a liner pond or a natural pond (in terms of the issues, challenges and opportunities you've covered in this video)?
@Ozponds
@Ozponds Год назад
No personal experience but I’d expect it to be more like a natural pond.

Hi Kev,I took a short trip and came back to see my pond was green as can be!! It’s a small pond,about 350 gal,should I drain it to get it clear again or is there a way to get it clear without harming the fish?

What do you think about non filter wildlife ponds? At least how many litter is suitable for goldfishes in nonfilter ponds
@Ozponds
@Ozponds Год назад
I’d say minimum 1000 litres. That’s just my opinion. Water will probably go green.

I’ve seen and read about clay lined ponds being built with layers of compressed clay to make them more watertight. Much like with a farm dam. Do you have opinions on doing that? Or Is a naturally low spot with clay sides and base enough?
@Ozponds
@Ozponds Год назад
I would think the more compact you can get the clay the better.

Hi Kev , hope you are keeping well and your fish too. I have had my 3 goldfish 🐟🐡from my aquarium in my 1000L above ground pond now for about a month and I recently added 3 little babies. I have quite a few marginals and a few lillies ( no flowers yet 🌸🌻) but plenty of bees 🐝and insects . I have a bog filter and a fountain and some solar air pumps. My problem is a lot of algae and the bottom of the pond always looks dirty with fish poo. But my fish are thriving. So should I just keep clearing out the algae by hand and using a little net to clean the pond every week ? I feed my fish pellets and flakes once a day. They always eat all of the food. One more question please , can I leave my fish with no food for a week as I want to go,away this summer ? If so won't they feel hungry because they always get very happy when I feed them. Thank you for your content it is very good. 😊
@Ozponds
@Ozponds Год назад
I would just keep manually removing the algae. It’s quite easy in a small pond and that way your not reliant on any product to maintain the balance. Algae is natural it just looks bad. Your fish will be fine without food for a week. If they get hungry they’ll eat the algae.

Feed less and there will be less algae

@suzannemoran7281 Год назад
@oliewray8357 Thank you for your reply but I don't want to feed them less. They seem to enjoy feeding time and it gives me a chance to sit down and wonder about things like how long would my pond stay warm for if our sun just disappeared never to come back. 🤔😉

@Ozponds Thank you Kev. Do you know if any studies have ever been done to show if a fish literally feels hunger ,just like we mostly , overfed humans do???? If your answer is No stop asking stupid questions !!!!! Then what is your personal opinion please ?. 🤔
@Ozponds
@Ozponds Год назад
I’ve never read any studies. My personal opinion would be that I’m sure they feel hunger. Most fish I observe are constantly eating and foraging. Natural foods like bugs, algae are better than store bought foods in my opinion. So while it might be necessary to supplement their diet with store bought food, they should be happier and healthier with natural foods. Again that’s just my opinion.

Yup. Set your expectations accordingly. My natural pond is frustrating until I calculate the expense of trying to "fix" it with no guarantees.
