Linford Christie was born in Saint Andrew, Jamaica and brought up by his grandmother until the age of seven when he followed his parents in emigrating to England. Coming out of the Barcelona 100m final starting blocks at the age of 32, Christie pulled away from a 'who's who' of famous sprinting names to claim his first Olympic title in a time of 9.96.

Some of the times ran in those days were so incredulously ridiculous. It still blows my mind that Koch’s farcical 47.60 is still technically the world record The whereabouts system used now is incredibly tough on athletes. It’s so much more secure than the testing made back in the day. Athletics (or any sport measuring physical limits for that matter) will never be totally clean, but it has never been cleaner

I agree it must be extremely frustrating especially when you have represented your country but have not been given the credit or appreciation perhaps if he were running today things would have been different as there is more money in this sport now and he more than likely would be in a position like Usain Bolt tripping over himself with sponsorship deals , this sport let's not forget that was 24 years ago the sport has evolved a great deal since then.

@gerryraak
@gerryraak 10 лет назад
What would you say about Flojo at the age of 38. She broke the World Record.in the 100M and 200M. At the Seoul Olympics she was tested positive and to save the USA of embarrassment like the Canadians she was asked to retire. Darrell Robinson, a former American 400 metres runner who claimed she had asked him to find out the cost of HGH. When he later told her that it was $2,000, she allegedly replied: ``If you want to make a million dollars, you've got to invest a couple of thousands.'' Robinson's comments were made in the German Stern magazine, months after the Seoul Olympics. Flo-Jo dismissed him as a ``liar'', but she did not sue for libel and Robinson stands by his account. Dr. Robert Kerr, a Californian doctor specialising in sports injuries, disclosed that he had treated Flo-Jo for an ankle injury. ``From the combination of her physical appearance and her increased performance, I believe she was on drugs,'' he said. Dr. Kerr should know: before steroids were outlawed in 1975, he had prescribed them to dozens of athletes, so is fully aware of what the drugs can do and their side effects. Pat Connolly, a former U.S. athlete turned coach, said that she was equally convinced of Flo-Jo's drug abuse and said that then, like now, American officials had not wanted to catch their top athletes, preferring them to win drug-assisted than lose. ``I don't think Flo-Jo is to blame as much as the establishment that allowed her and others to get away with it,'' Professor Werner Franke has been less equivocal. The man who uncovered the systematic sports doping programme in the former East Germany has pointed to the seizure Griffith Joyner suffered while travelling from Los Angeles to St Louis two years ago as "symptomatic of the abuse of anabolic steroids". It is known that excessive steroid use can narrow arteries and strain the heart. It is not known for certain, though, whether such symptoms were responsible for killing the woman who ran out of the world record books. Therefore, pick the boulder from your eyes my friend before you start to blow the dust from someone else.
@gerryraak
@gerryraak 10 лет назад
Dr Park Jong Sei, Director of the Doping Control Centre in Seoul, revealed after the Games that 20 athletes who failed tests had not been punished - because of split votes among the International Olympic Committee's medical commission. Griffith Joyner escaped admonition on the understanding that she would never race again, thus sparing the United States the shame brought upon Canada by Johnson.
@ewaf88
@ewaf88 10 лет назад
gerryraak Yes she did change a lot in appearance between 1984 (good sprinter) to 1988 (out of this World) but she sadly died at 38 after reaching her peak at 28. People not sure of her innocence/guilt should compare pictures of her in 1984 and 1988 and ask themselves - does this look right.
@gerryraak
@gerryraak 8 лет назад
Conte said he believes a coverup “all the way to the top” involved track and Olympic officials at the 1988 Seoul Games. He said sprinter Florence Griffith Joyner, heptathlete/long jumper Jackie Joyner-Kersee and 400-meter hurdler Andre Phillips - three marquee gold medalists - all tested positive for PEDs in the South Korean capital, and “they were all covered up.” “And if you noticed what happened thereafter was that here at (28) years old Flo-Jo was at the height of her economic earning potential and all of a sudden she retires,” said Conte, looking back on the immediate aftermath of Griffith Joyner’s three-gold, one-silver medal haul in Seoul. “And Jackie Joyner also retires, (though) she did come back in 1992, four years later. . .”
@ewaf88
@ewaf88 8 лет назад
gerryraak I've always been convinced that Flo-Jo was a cheat - her face seemed to become much more manly between 1984 and 1988. Personally I think her records should be erased along with all the Eat German's - Russians and Chinese.

And the fact that he was such an unremarkable athlete for the first half of his career. He didn’t even make the 1984 Olympics team, he was 24 - he should be at his peak. But come 1986 - physically he was bigger and became the surprise winner of the European championships and from that point he went from strength to strength. Worlds, Olympics, etc. Totally not suspicious. He’s had multiple drug controversies as well. 1988 he tested positive for pseudoephedrine, but was given the benefit of the doubt. He has a history of evading and abusing drug testers in his career and in 1994, he bought an over-the-counter stimulant (containing ephedrine) for his teammate Wariso. And although he had retired in 1997, in 1999 he tested positive for nandrolone. That last one was cut and dry. A 2 year ban and banned for life from the British athletics association. I’m English myself and I love athletics to death, but I find it hard to respect Christie. I try to block out most of the 80s and 90s athletics, it’s all so dubious
