You were lucky to find an Akito for £150, they're going for silly money now. Got my lp12 stripped down and ready for rebuild ( funds permitting) so finding these videos very helpful. Thanks.

It’s testament to the Valhalla though as it’s powered 24/7 that it’s lasted all that time. Can’t knock it’s design.

Exactly man hatters gotta.....go f**k themselves really I just got one for a early HiFi setup from a film set and I’m buying it from the company cause it’s huge. I love the sound and as for this setup old Brit valve amp n pre + pair of Goodmans in funky factory Sherwood? Cabs. Totally stoked with the sound which was Late 1960’s early 1970’s Aussie and Brit vinyl (all original) plus some Beethoven and Mozart ( can’t say much but keep an ear out for the soundtrack ) haha

Advertised on ebay Mobil velocite No 6 high speed spindle machine oil, a very thin oil and claimed that Linn uses it.

I use Mobil Velocite No6 High speed machine tool oil its supposed to be what linn use its a thin oil I think if its to thick it will cause speed issues. Ebay sells the oil.

I can vouch for the shock danger having received one by accidentally touching the board. Nearly blew me across the room.

I think those bridge rectifiers were potted, so the plastic housing has cracked with the heat and all thats left is the potting compound. The holes in the pcb look like the design was for a bigger rectifier so somebody at the factory scrimped for a smaller one I think. Dear oh dear!

There have been several aftermarket power supplies built to use with the LP12, the Naim Armageddon for one, and I think Roksan built one as well; most likely these would have electronic switching for 45 rpm speed, and I wonder if anyone ever built a power supply that would allow an lp 12 to go at 78 rpm, perhaps with some pitch adjust capability, the kind of thing that music historians and record archivists would want ?! There are probably others I never heard of as well. I have never actually heard a Linn that was equipped with an external, aftermarket / upgraded power supply. A friend of mine in England told me that an LP 12 equipped with an Armageddon power supply and a Naim Aro arm was a serious turntable!

I transferred a track from the Dire Straights album love over gold along side a cd for comparison. At the end there was no shift between the two tracks position. That was really very impressive.

@@SoddingaboutSi , an Lp12 that has been set up correctly and is in proper working order is a very good machine. Unfortunately, many people have probably only heard a Linn that wasn't working right, was poorly set up, or may have been modified by someone who thought they knew better. BTW, Another clue to the age or era of your machine is the fact that it has a welded sub chassis. The later version LP-12's with the improved bearing assembly typically also had a sub chassis that is glued together, not spot-welded, and on one of those you can usially see a little bead of gray epoxy-like glue around the edges where the reinforcing bar was glued to the diamond-shaped subchassis.

Hi! I was wondering how you fixed the stiff spot on your tonearm bearing? I would love to try to save some money if I could :)

Hi Simon. How does one tell if it needs new springs, grommets etc! And what do you think of the Trampolin base, will it help with a table that’s on sprung flooring?
@SoddingaboutSi
@SoddingaboutSi 5 лет назад
Usually I'd the springs are becoming weak, you can't get the suspension to oscillate up and down without becoming unstable. The grommets can split from memory too. As for the trampolin, I think snake oil !
@jerrypartington3650
@jerrypartington3650 5 лет назад
@@SoddingaboutSi The Trampolin was designed to improve the sound of an LP12 placed on heavy furniture. It was not intended to be a solution to sprung floors, the best remedy in this case is a light rigid wall mounted shelf. As for springs and grommets always replace, they are inexpensive and modern versions are manufactured to tighter tolerances. Suspension set up is also far more predictable if you ensure that the suspension bolts themselves are perpendicular to the stainless steel top plate.

Audio Origami will service the Akito, Linn won't service it. The current Akito costs £1630.

Thanks Simon, great video, inspired me to check the motor on my belt drive turntable for re-oiling. Did you clean the belt, pulley and inner platter surface with IPA? Tend to pick up bits of worn belt and general dirt.
@MrDubje

Never heard of this. But I'm not into audio, and this is before my time, haha. Interesting though! So this is "simply" a stabilized three-phase supply for a motor in a turntable, that also lets you upgrade it for different speed records, wow. Perhaps it's an idea to place the capacitors off the board on a separate piece of vero-board or something, out of the way of the heat entirely. If there's room and it doesn't affect the circuit of-course.
@jerrypartington3650
@jerrypartington3650 5 лет назад
It's a two-phase power supply, the motor is AC synchronous, i.e. its speed is governed by the supplied AC frequency.
@jogmas12
@jogmas12 4 года назад
Question. Why does this turntable need a sophisticated power supply when my Acoustic Research turntable (almost the same turntable by the way because of the same 3 point spring suspension) from the mid 1980s got by with much less and had a wow and flutter spec of .04% ????

That PCB looks like the homebrew PCBs I make by using a UV light, acid and etching fluid. Was it common to find PCBs looking like that in old equipment? The only thing that makes this look a bit more professional is the silkscreen.

If it’s a Cirkus it will have to have to the Linn Graphite oil but if it’s a non Cirkus sewing machine is what they used. Although the graphite oil can’t be used in a non Cirkus. Just checked, That is a non Cirkus so should never be used graphite oil.

Well spotted. I was just going to use the Linn "Black oil" as it was alreary in it. But it looks like it should be mineral machine oil of low viscosity. However there are conflicting ideas. forums.linn.co.uk/bb/showthread.php?tid=9565

@@SoddingaboutSi The bearing housing outer, the machined metal part is the best guide, there have been three colours, silver gold and black, only the later black housings are suitable for Linn Black oil. Another guide is the colour of the plastic bearing liner, earlier ones being white, later ones black. The change to black oil took place around the mid 1980's ....black outer/ white liner. Adding black oil to an old style bearing can result in seizure as it causes the liner to swell. Also scrupulous cleanliness is vital, as the bearing is a high precision single point. If in doubt, invert and drain the bearing, do not use tissue paper or cotton buds to clean the inner as there is a high risk of contamination, flush it with it's specific oil. FRom what I can see the bearing on your featured LP12 appears to have a gold housing/ white liner, so its not suitable for black oil. Hope this helps.
