I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for six MLF Championships and won roughly a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.

I'm a novice bass fisherman who was advised to get some Lipless Crankbaits by more experienced bass fisherman. I really didn't know what to do with them. This video helps, thanks.

It’s been a long time since I’ve thrown a lipless… I kinda retired em for a Damiki Vault blade bait… I’ve been watching some lipless videos lately and I’m definitely going to dust a few off and start fishing with them again… thanks for the confirmation!

Good info again, love rattle trap baits from shallow to yo yo in 30 fow ticking the bottom. 1/4 -1/2 ounce from shallow to max 12 fow ticking the bottom using 12lb. Test carbon. 12 -30 fow yo yo mid water column to ticking bottom 3/4 ounce trap using braid with a carbon leader. Ya.... you're right about being at a slight disadvantage of poor hook ups and pulled hooks..... however this set up teaches an angler to develop soft hands when fishing braid/carbon combo. Vs. the heavy hands required for straight mono applications. "Feather it through" my favorite phrase you use. Rapala ripping raps are my go to regardless of bait size 1/4 -3/4 ounce. Great modern design that vibrates on the free fall. Thanks for the vid always appreciate them.

I throw lipless and squarebills on braid. I use the smoothest braid possible (the new suffix 131 is butter smooth/quiet and it sinks like fluorocarbon), a medium power moderate action total noodle rod, and ~7’ or more of either mono or stretchy fluoro like Sunline Crank FC. I think this setup gives me extreme casting distance, lets me change leader sizes for cranking laydowns or deep reservoir yoyo fishing without having to buy fresh spools of fluoro, and has the same about of give/softness to let the fish take the bait and keep them pinned. Great video!

Thanks for the tip/suggestion. I don’t know if I have ever caught anything on a lipless but I also feel like I haven’t thrown it more than 5 casts. I’ll make it a point to give it a few casts today. I just built a NFC delta lmx MB-705 which might be a good rod for it.

Fantastic information. This is what I need to know. Keeps lures free of snags more often and generates bites. More of these videos, please! You mentioned Fluorocarbon line and I agree. Any hints about what you do to make your fluorocarbon behave. I really liked the tips stretching out the line before you start fishing to get the curls out, but I guess I'm thinking about right after spooling new line. I'm getting better but still have horrible birds nests. Thanks for everything.

Another good vid Matt....I commented on the jerk bait video to, if you could do a video on your thoughts of the importance of the jerk bait pause "sitting perfectly still" with no rise or fall would be great. I've seen others say if on the pause it rises or falls or you even swim it a little the fish will not commit to it.

I like the full stretch of mono. Fluoro has very little stretch. Fluoro is too stiff for the fight, reel, setting, and bad on spinning reels. Ever jerk a lipless? One of the best secrets. It's like snapping horizontally. Jigging it off the bottom is great at night. You gotta contend with losing $10 lures with zero regrets in this technique. Sometimes I make them weedless for this purpose.
@Tallnerdyguy

Hey Matt. I'm wondering if fluoro is really needed. I've seen studies from Salt Strong that shows mono to be more abrasion resistant. And I've also seen a test where fluoro actually stretches more than mono. And I've personally used fluoro and mono on my lipless rigs and found that the fluoro doesn't take the abuse of cast after cast all day long. Noticed it gets frayed all along the line that has been cast. And due to the cost, it just doesn't seem to be very smart. I know the argument is that fluoro is less visible. But with a moving bait, do you really think the bass are able to see mono?
@MattStefanFishing
@MattStefanFishing 2 года назад
I think fluoro gets more bites than other lines because its less visible, but I also think there are really strong arguments for monofilament with fast moving treble hooked baits like lipless, topwaters and crankbaits. I would also agree that monofilament holds up better. Fluoro gets very brittle when damaged.

@MattStefanFishing

@jerrylanglois7892
@jerrylanglois7892 2 года назад
No, disregarding the straight retrieve is wrong. When fish are spread out on large flats you need to make very long cast with the lipless, using a fast, straight retrieve to locate them... no '' cripple '' or erratic action needed, cuz you want to cover as much water as possible as fast as you can. There are no absolutes in fishing, so don't absolutely eliminate any way to fish any lure.
@MattStefanFishing
@MattStefanFishing 2 года назад
If it works for you then that is all that matters since confidence is king. But in my opinion it has always been more productive for me to work in some sort of twitch or quick pause when retrieving a lipless across large flats, which I dont believe has any impact on me being able to cover water quickly.
@jerrylanglois7892
@jerrylanglois7892 2 года назад
@@MattStefanFishing How can working it in twitches and pauses allow you to cover as much water as fast and steady ?
@MattStefanFishing
@MattStefanFishing 2 года назад
@@jerrylanglois7892 it’s how I said in the video I’d use it for schoolers. It’s a straight burn retrieve with 2 or 3 quick kills for a split second.

@@MattStefanFishing Yea, yea... aren't you the same guy who said warm water stays below cold water ? Well, like I told you, water is like air, the colder the heavier. Ever heard of a '' cold air balloon '' ?
@MattStefanFishing
@MattStefanFishing 2 года назад
@@jerrylanglois7892 I’m pretty sure you got me confused with someone else since I’m well aware of how water temperatures work. But I’m pretty sure you are not 100% right in your statement. Spend a winter in wisconsin and I’ll show you how hard cold water will be above warmer water.
