You just made me feel so much better as a black pagoda owner. She's never bloomed for me but her leaves are super healthy and is always producing new leaves.
I love my lipstick plants! They are epiphytes and therefore prefer a loose potting medium. I have mine growing in equal parts, perlite, coconut bark and seed & cuttings soil. In my experience Lipstick plants like being a little bit rootbound/tight in their pot.
Thank you SO much!!! I've been looking everywhere specifically for soil preferences of Lipstick plants. I've read some vague info but it was a little confusing because, as you said, they are epiphytic but I've only seen suggestions of peaty but well draining soil so it just wasn't adding up for me (or at least not entirely clear). I was hoping to get a little more soil tips in the video (I appreciate the information I did get) but I'm happy to find it in the comments instead. I just purchased a mature Black Pagoda and was thinking it might do well in a bark heavy aroid mix. Does that sound about right?
A lipstick plant has been on my wish list ever since I saw a video about how much you LOVED yours! I couldn’t find one local to me in the UK. I went to a nursery today & found the Rasta lipstick plant... in bloom!! I’m so glad I now have one in my collection she’s stunning! Thank you so much for this video; very helpful. Thank you for sharing your passion with us all. You were the one that got me hooked on a plant addiction! 😂❤️ - Vicky
I bought a Mona Lisa lipstick plant only because you are so crazy about your lipstick plant! The blooms are completely red and gorgeous. All of my windows face north and it’s still doing well!! Really Resilient and Beautiful plant. ❤️❤️❤️
You're just too cute loving on your plants ! I'm glad to know I'm not alone! Lol !! Great info on a plant that I haven't seemed to make totally happy yet . It's just sitting there staring at me 👀 not doing much ! Thanks Harli !!
I have a Cassiopeia which I bought on a snowy day. When I was taking it home all the leaves got spotty from the snow. She’s reviving and she just bloomed for the first time since last year. I’m a happy camper. Thanks for tips. I have her next to a south west window.
Literally searched your channel for a lipstick plant care video like last week and was shocked that you didn't have one yet because you talk about how much you love them so much lol thanks for the video!
Bless you! My twisted lipstick has been struggling and i cant for the life figure out why. Now I believe I have it too close to the window! Great timing love you most!
Ooh I have a twisted lipstick plant too but like the newer leaves aren't curly but flat, will they curl later or is there something wrong with my plant?
Perfect timing. I have just acquired a lipstick plant. Aeschynanthus firecracker is what it was labeled as. It is yet to bloom but we are in winter here in New Zealand but he is happy as sitting pretty in my super sunny dry living room. Soon becoming a favourite.
Harli g, I'm a starting youtuber and I'm from Utah as well. I currently reside in salt lake city, and you totally inspired me to get more house plants and act on the fact that I want a jungle in my house, love your videos!.
Dear Harli G ,I am, so happy to find your video! Thank you for your great interduction how to keep plant happy! I L O V E my lipstick plant and she know it! I “ talk” to her several times in the day and tell how much she make me happy. Now is middle of January but : she is in full bloom! I wish if I CAN SEND TO you photo OF HER ( and her smile!!!!🥰) I cut few weeks ago some small brunches and put them in the water. And guess what ? EACH HAVE BUD!!!!! Thank you once again! Sincerely ,Ana 👍👏🏻♥️😂🇭🇷
I didn't know what I had. My plant was getting a little leggy and I stuck it in a north window and crossed my fingers. It started putting on blooms and I had at least a hundred lasting all winter here in Michigan! I'm propagating now and it has turned in to a beautiful full plant. I never had plants until I retired and I know NOTHING about anything but I love them!!!
I have the variegated one and non variegated and the variegated is such a fast grower, I was shocked. They are great little plants, non fussy just bright light and keep sort of moist
Hi Harley, my little niece says you are a Disney princess, I asked which one but she is fast asleep. So suddenly! Thanks for the info, I think I have cutting rooting in water. Sending big smiles from Scotland 🌺Tish
i’m on a binge of your videos and they’re all so entertaining and helpful! i’m new to houseplants and i’ve already reached a point that is concerning to my friends!!!!!!!!!
I just bought a black pagoda! I had no idea how gorgeous these plants are, I am so excited! Your videos are always welcome and helpful!! Thanks Harli! You have the greatest personality 😁😉
I don’t have lipstick plant yet, but after seeing your video I’m gonna hunt for the variegated and the black pagoda. Pretty plants, thank you for sharing.👌❤️😘
I JUST impulse bought a variegated lipstick plant so the timing of this video was perfect! So good to know it will be okay in my drrrrrryy Colorado apartment! Thank you!!
I have the Rasta lipstick plant, it’s flowers so similar to your plant but the leaves are so different. I feel the same way about my plant as you feel about yours. I feel in love!
L 🍓 V E ! i have the "lipstick monalisa, twister & purple star". my fave is the monalisa. awesome informative vid! thanks ms. harli g. hope you have a fun weekend ahead! xxo 💚
I got the variegated one like you have recently and it’s so beautiful! Mine has very little variegation though so I’m hoping keeping it in the brightest spot in my house will help! I think I’m gonna try and propagate and maybe that will encourage some more variegated growth ☺️ either way, I’m obsessed lol!
I believe I have the Cassiopia variety too, but it hasn't bloomed yet. It's a new addition to my plant family and is above my bed too, in a south-facing window. So now, I have to see how it does and look for other varieties. Thank you, Harli for the informative video.
Love your enthusiasm about lipstick plants.. I swear we have a black pagoda and its blooms are orange. It actually in bloom right now. Îts funny how some branches cascade and some grow straight up.
I too love the lipstick plant, I got the Black Pagoda last year and she has been doing great, I have one other variety of lipstick that I am not sure of, the leaves are smaller and they always have been from the time my ex-husband got it for me as a gift, and in a 4 inch pot, it is now in a 6 inch pot and three times it's original size, it blooms all the time. The variegated one is on my wish list. I'm with you Harli, I love these plants, and will be looking for the variegated one and also the larger leaf one as well. I love my black Pagoda but the flowers aren't very impressive, I mostly got it because of the leaves and how cool they look. I find them very easy to take care of, mine are near a window but do not get direct sun and they love it, both of mine are near a north facing window, I also live in Idaho. I water mine when I know the soil is dry, I guess I have done it for so long this way because I know my plants, what works for me may not work for someone else, this is just how I do it. Thanks Harli see you soon, bye for now.
You're so rad, honestly!! We are so similar lol one of your other videos you spoke about how you are a hermit and will even hide when the post man comes lol i do the exact same thing, every time lol Also, anytime i need some info on another type of plant, i you to your channel and bam, its right there. So thank you! For loving plants and being so informative and a touch silly. You have totally inspired me to grow my at home jungle!! I deal with a lot of not too bright of spaces so i am quite limited i feel, but i am learning!! Getting a lipstick plant today for one of the sunnier spots in my place! Also, do you have a fiddle leaf fig anywhere in there?!
Lol well actually.... I did lol. Not the full one but I found a (completely drowned) variegated one at Home Depot and went on a rescue mission! Fingers crossed he pulls through
Hiya! This is my first video of yours to watch! You have a fun personality and I can tell you really love plants! I just picked up the Cassiopeia variety and she is so lovely! My fave! Thanks for all the great info!
You read my mind on this video lol. Just picked up a Black Pagoda from Cact and Trops last week! I would love it if you did more care videos like this :) *cough* Alocsia Amazonica/Polly *cough* string of hooks/bananas *cough* :)
Your 'Black Pagoda' isn't a 'Black Pagoda' - it's just A. longicaulis. 'Black Pagoda' is a hybrid, it has the foliage of longicaulis but instead of the plain jane green flowers it has lovely red and orange flowers :-) Your information about growing them is excellent. I would only add that because they are epiphytic, well draining soil is important, I use a blend of potting mix, coarse pumice and orchid bark. I have three different Aeschynanthus, they all grow pretty fast, really rewarding plants.
i had to move mine, after like 6 months of not blooming i put it a few meter from. window and it gets direct sun for about 1 hour a day and now its absolutley going crazy with the blooms, also i put up some led lights and usually keep it on purple or red and apparently that helps with flowering as well, im super happy rn
I am curiouse why do you not have any humidifiers? You have made such an investment already in your leaf babies. I just bought a little rooted 2" rooted plant off of Etsy. So this video is wonderful to guide me me in providing a wonderful environment for it to survive in. Absolutely live your videos. You are such a good human!!!🌸🌺🍀
I have a curly lipstick plant, but from all my plants, this is the only one for which I can't seem to get the watering right! I'm not sure if maybe the soil is too water retentive, but whenever I water it, it takes FOREVER for it to dry out!!! It just sits wet for so long. I guess I need to water it less as well, but this is the only plant where I have this problem. I definitely don't expect any blooms any time soon because of this lol.
How do you prevent pests? Do you apply a Neem Oil mixture to your Lipstick plants? How do you do it? Do you avoid the flowers or can you spray them too? Thanks so much for your videos!!
I love you so much. makes my day to share in plant love. thanks for all you do! P.s I'm glad we're using the same fish fertilizer so now I'm more confident in it being a good product. I killed a few succulents with a certain fertilizer, do you use espoma for them or fish too? thanks!
WOW. Can I please say thank you? That was such an educational video on the lipstick plant no matter what variety you have!! I appreciate you.🤓 Btw, my new lipstick plant is called Myra.
Can you do a little video about the dancing dolphin plant. I think they are similar to the lipstick plant but they are kind of fuzzy. Would really appreciate it. Enjoying your videos greatly
No curly lipstick plant? 😘 but ive been looking for info about my curly lipstick, & I can only find 2 videos with the curly variety.. you should get one. You'd love it! 💄
I’d love for you to do a care video on Bird of Paradise. I got a young one several weeks ago and it’s just now giving me a new leaf. I’d love to learn more on their care. And I also use the fish fertilizer, the smell definitely is pungent.
Hi Harli! I have a video suggestion if you're up for it: how to propagate begonias by leaf vein cutting. I've read about it but don't have any begonias to try it myself. Just a thought 😉 Take care lovely! 💚🌿
I have the Cassiopeia lipstick plant. I got it at of all places a small town grocery store with NO LABEL. I thought the one bloom was interesting. It took me forever to find the name "lipstick plant". And then to find you to determine the actual one. I a trying to determine if I can root cuttings of my baby to make a thicker plant. I have 8 sticks. Only ONE blooms a flower every other month.
I was looking to buy a lipstick plant cause of how Harli raves about hers, and only half paying attention I bought a goldfish plant instead 🤦♀️ Not nearly as beautiful but eventually ill get one hahaha
Mine was doing so well and after moving to college, I thought she would love my north facing window, but leaves are dropping and buds stopped. There’s new growth, though. Also, it seems the leaves are SO wrinkly all the time so. Idk. We’re working on it. 😂
My black pagoda is probably one of my all time favorites in my collection! The leaf variegation is stunning! Dose anyone know if it’s ok to pot them in terra-cotta?
I just got a lipstick plant from my grandparents which have been forgotten for over 10 years, its still alive but need some tlc. It have flowered every year even without care and minimal of water, once or twice a month. Anything special I should do to give it a good start? I will repot it tomorrow and clean it up a bit.
Can you tell me the difference between Mona Lisa and Cassiopeia? The blooms and foliage look the same to me. How would one be able to tell the difference? Thanks!
