#50 - We are Lisa and Tim of Old Rope Salvage and from our workshop on a farm in Cornwall we are currently, for our sins, restoring and rebuilding a 1975 Bedford Firetruck. From rusty wreck to epic gleaming carriage of silver and gold and, yes indeed, some proper 1970s brown, we’ve come a long way, but there is still a long road to travel if we are to realise our ambition of transforming this old girl into the rolling home on wheels of our dreams.
From sandblasting and restoring the massive chassis, to repairing and replating every single nut and bolt, it’s been a tough journey, with many a triumph and disaster along the way. Last time you saw us we had just finished rebuilding the giant front axle. We’ve had a bit of a break over the winter and we will talk more about that and our plans for the coming months in this video, but before that, allow us to take you back to the weeks just before Christmas when we started work on the 6 massive wheels. Did we get them finished before winter stopped play? Or were we left feeling … deflated?

This channel is the story of us, Tim & Lisa, and our attempt to build the World's Greatest HOUSE-on-WHEELS on the World's Smallest Budget ... A unique motorhome, if you like, part vintage 70s, part off road overlander, all tiny home on wheels.
We are 2 'old enough to know better' artists from Cornwall in the UK, and together we are building this off-grid home on wheels from the remains of a 1975 Bedford Firetruck.
We bought the truck on eBay at the end of 2020 and had it delivered by an even bigger truck to a huge, old barn-on-a-farm we are renting to use as our workshop whilst we undertake this challenge.
Well, several YEARS and a few set backs later, we’re currently in the process of ‘lovingly’ restoring the base vehicle, taking the whole thing apart, piece by rusty piece, so we can make it all new and shiny again, before we embark on the even bigger task of building a home on its back out of nothing more than grit, imagination, sweat, tears and possibly a bit of magic and wishful thinking!
Oh, and tea!
Subscribe to the channel and join us in our workshop and we promise it will be nothing if not value for money … it’s free, you see?
New video every two weeks (or thereabouts ... we do our best, you know?) Grab a cup of tea, Subscribe and join us on our quest ...

Nice to see all the work you've been putting into her restoration. I built my first Housetruck in NZ, in 1980 on an old Commer, then progressed through 1935, 1947 and 1952 Bedford's. I'm now in Sweden, living in a Mercedes LA 911 that I've restored and tinkered on. Built my own house on the back and living offgrid at the back of a farm. My Truck is diesel and a few years ago I changed out my gearbox for a ZF S6-36+GV36, six speed with splitter, that made so much difference to driving. I'm enjoying watching you work on your truck, brings back many memories of me working on my many trucks, thanks

Wow! That sounds like an amazing journey through many trucks, how fantastic. We are very envious of you living off grid in Sweden. How is it in the winter? When we bought our Bedford, budget was very much our top consideration. We really love old vehicles as well, but hoping that despite a few compromises on modern comforts, the vehicle is mechanically capable and simple enough for us to be able to maintain ourselves. We are very much learning as we go. Thank you so much for watching, and lovely to hear that our project brings back good memories for you. 😊

Love to see you guys back! Just remember, you are doing this to your timetable not ours, and I know there are lots of struggles that we don’t see. Never worry about that, we are lucky enough to get a video whenever it is ready, we can wait! Great progress, and always awesome to see your dynamic as a couple. I really like the white wall pinstripe, subtle and classy.

Another vote for the whitewall 👍🏻 Thank you so much, Ashley. It always means a lot to us to hear your messages of encouragement, particularly when things get a bit tough. We will keep the videos coming. Hope all is well with you 😊

Thank you, dearest, for all your love and support 🥰 Yes, this is tough work, not for the faint hearted! Tim almost lost his front teeth yesterday during an altercation with an adjustable spanner! I will get back on board when we start building the back. Until then, Tim can enjoy playing with his bits of metal in my absence!😆

Thank you ☺️ Yes, Tim will be just fine while I take a break. I’m hoping in my absence he will get the truck up and running and then when I come back we can get on with the second phase (building the house on the back!) of this mammoth project together. Thanks, as always, for following 😎

Hi Tim hope your doing ok, I think your doing a brilliant job on the truck it’s coming together really good. Noticed that you didn’t put the spacers on the wheel drum studs as you were putting the wheel back on. Looking forward to seeing your next video (do you know roughly when that would be?) 👍👍

Thanks, Alex 👍🏻 We’re working hard to keep bringing you guys the videos but ‘life’ stuff slowing things down, as always. Rest assured we won’t miss anything out and all will be documented in our videos as we go. Tim is currently working on the brake lines and filming his progress, so as soon as he has that in the bag, we’ll be working on the video edit. Probably a couple of weeks, but you know how it is … best laid plans, and all that! Thanks for continuing to watch and follow. Much appreciated, as always 😎

So glad you're back - I was getting a little worried... It is a massive job you're doing - huge - way bigger than my project and I'm going to miss my deadline even though I've been working hard. You guy are doing an amazing job - Tim, your technical skill is inspiring - and Lisa, your have-a-go attitude is so amazing - no way would my wife be as hands on and supportive as you are. Very impressive. I wish you both all the best. Lisa, take a break. You deserve it. And Tim, keep at it man! I know you don't need any more motivation because you love fiddling around with this greasy mechanical stuff and making it brand new, just as much as me. Thanks for the video.

We are still being fueled by pasties, of course! 😉 Tim keeps promising me he is building us a ‘house’ to live in, but I’m beginning to have my suspicions! I will probably return to the project when he’s finished fiddling around with bits of metal, but in the meantime, yes, a good break is definitely in order before work begins on the back box. Winter is always a bit of a struggle, but hopefully spring/summer will see one last big push to get this beast back on the road. As always, thanks loads for your support and encouragement. Really can’t emphasise enough how much of a difference it makes to our morale. Hope you and the family are all well.

One day it'll be finished and you'll be driving around the UK and Europe without a care in the world as your home is coming with you. Cornish winters, draughty barns and sand getting everywhere mean this is a low point but spring is around the corner and will get your spirits up. Thanks for asking, Everyone is doing well on our end. All the best!

Hi there. The project I looking fantastic. Just a heads up, if you want to go to single rear wheels, like the military Bedfords, they have different rear hubs, brakes and possibly axle assembly. I found this out myself and am still waiting on a definitive answer on what is needed to convert the rear axle..
@OldRopeSalvage
@OldRopeSalvage 5 месяцев назад
Thank you 😊 Yes, could be tricky, but hopefully something for the longer term for us. We decided a while ago that we would focus on restoring the truck more or less to its original state so we would at least have it up and running, and then consider modifications later on. I think Tim has been doing some research into how to convert the rear axle, so if and when we come to it, we will of course share what we do. Thanks for following, as always 😎

Don’t forget the new dvsa rules say tyres can’t be over ten years old

Fortunately for us, historical non commercial vehicles over 40 years old are exempt from this rule, but we will of course have them safety checked 👍🏻

How do you earn a living? Always wondered!@@OldRopeSalvage

Well, the project has (until this point) been funded by the sale of our boat, but we are both artists (Tim is a magnificent oil painter and I am a drawer and writer). We are currently working numerous ‘odd jobs’. Tim does gardening and I do cleaning … It really is that glamorous! Lots of hard graft, basically. Hopefully, during my ‘sabbatical’, I will get to produce some decent art to sell! 👩‍🎨🤞🏻
