Completely agree. And, in my humble opinion, Lisa was an R&B artist, not pop. In other words, Lisa is more from Teena Marie and Jon B’s tribe than, say, Taylor Dayne and Daryl Hall’s camp. And R&B heads know that both Taylor and Daryl got LOTS of soul but not all their music was R&B-based. Lisa’s was. ✌🏽
@@gabrielmcdonnell8699 Oh shes definitely R&B. Her first album was more dance oriented but also the soulful house R&B kind of way. After that pretty much all her albums were soulful R&B. This is an R&B-(Pop) song for sure.
***LADY LISA STANSFIELD TRIVIA TIME!!!*** ...It's gettin' REAL, y'all...(5:16) ... - (5:34) ....what!??? ...wellllll..... this was the 1st single from Lisa's self-titled Nov. 1996 Album (in the UK); and YES, it was VERY much controversial...SO much so, that Lisa did an Interview, talking about the making of the Video.... - ...She said someone from her (US) Record label (Arista) was on the set, complaining about her hair & makeup, saying she looked like a "racoon", and they wouldn't be able to 'promote' her, looking like that....(2:12)... - ...and, this "sample head" (2:26) can tell you that this is 'influenced' by the France Joli 1981 track "Gonna Get Over You", with it's retro-80's post-Disco sound.... OF COURSE, when the Video was finished, and they saw the "Boy meets Boy" twist (5:03), they chose NOT to release this track in the USA.... - ....They remixed the Album, chose a Barry White cover ("Never Never Gonna Give You Up") for the (US) 1st single, and changed the Album cover for the Summer 1997 US release...with LESS makeup.... - ...BUT! ....Lisa became a MASSIVE Dance Club Diva 1997-1998, with FOUR #1 Dance Club hits from the Album, before Madonna ("Confessions") & Kylie ("Aphrodite") tied her.....
Thanks for the great trivia as usual! No wonder this song only sounds vaguely familiar to me. Too bad it was never released as an official single in the US.
Thank you Empress for making a video of Lisa Stansfield's "The Real Thing". I see that it was released in 1997. That's 26 years and I haven't listened to this played anywhere. This is my first time listening to this super smooth song. I've noticed on this song Lisa's singing is reminiscent of the great Stephanie Mills.
This was great :D Never heard it before but I'll be looking for the 12" / extended version immediately hahaha The beat was on point and i really like her voice . Great Pick :)
Empress. I have always loved our Lisa. And when I say “Our” it’s because I’m a northern lad and she came from a place called Rochdale near to where I grew up in Burnley Lancashire. Id love for you to hear an interview with her and listen to her accent. It’s nothing at all how you would think she’d sound. My dad always thought she was a black artist. 💙
There are so many great LS tracks. Try Change, Live Together also she performed I want to break free at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert...you MUST check it out.
Never gonna fall Treat me like a woman & Never never gonna give you up You cant deny it People hold on Time to make you mine Set your loving free Let's just call it love I can go on lol ❤
This song was club fire, didn't get wide release in the US. The gays of an age know it though! I like to say Lisa is the bridge between Adele and Kylie. I would've love to see more from her
Honestly Lisa Stansfield just didn't catch on at the time. Been Around the World was a top 10 hit that then became a joke and her second single wasn't a hit. She had industry love, but Celine and Mariah both dropped their first singles in the U.S that same year and she got overshadowed. At least that's my take, but I was just a casual teenage listener at the time...
