I'm not sure there's a storyline that connects all the songs. It's not exactly a concept album. But there are some common themes, like regret, insecurity, and longing. But I think it's more helpful to view each song individually rather than as part of a larger story.
I actually feel like the first 3/4 of the album has a continuous story. Track 1 talks about the end of her first relationship and track 2 talks about the struggles of the relationship track 3 and 4 deal with getting over that relationship track 5 is about how she’s haunted by her first relationship and she’s not sure if she can love someone like that again (which is also what she talks about in track 6) not really sure what’s going on in track 7 lol but track 8 and 9 (because of the ceilings music video) seem to be about fantasizing about a crush who’s in a relationship already. After that the album seems to be less of a cohesive story until track 14 which feels like a nostalgic look back on the beginning of the story
You can see the entire 5 seconds flat movie on youtube. It would have been better to react to the movie, because it tells the complete story so eloquently. Yes, it is a concept album and the movie is amazing. Lizzy McAlpine is a great talent.
The “Ceilings” video was filmed way after the other videos and that video was shot with her real life boyfriend while the others were part of the short film she released when the album came out, hence why it probably was so confusing lol.
