This was my first Yes album, back in '87. The tour opened me up to their older stuff. I think this album was more of a cohesive collaboration of the band with Jon which gives it an edge over 90125...though I love both albums. Trevor Rabin has some of the juiciest variety of little solos too.

The ironic thing is so many fans panned the 80s works because it wasn't that 70s sound scape that was the Yes signature. Reality, its the musicianship of Yes, the sounds and textures they create. This is an awesome album, from song to song. Only Yes can do what your hearing here. Copied by many but never duplicated.

I've been recommending *I'm Running* (on the 2nd side) for a while. I consider it to be one of YES' Top Ten masterpieces. It starts off with an iconic Chris Squire opening riff that the band develops throughout. It also features what I consider to be one of Alan White's best drumming performances on a studio album. (I think he plays steel drums on it?) I'll admit that the first time I listened to it I wasn't thinking it was _all that,_ but after repeated listenings to what they had accomplished with it, I now celebrate it as _truly special._

I have always liked this album quite a bit. Shoot High, Aim Low is probably my most favorite song from them of all time. Yes, Genesis, Asia, and the other prog musicians that decided to participate in the 80s, at least in my opinion, did the 80s sound much better than anyone else ever did. Rush and Yes both showed that progressive rock could have exquisite short song writing as well as large sweeping epic compositions. Talk is also a great album, but I also like the album that comes in between Talk and Big Generator, the Union album; that makes me a bit of an anomaly in the Yes fan world.

Hey Jim! I always liked this album. The Big Tour was incredible. I saw several shows in the Midwest. The album should have been released a year sooner to follow up 90125. The band toured 90125 for almost 2 years. By the time BG was recorded so much time had passed in-between albums. By now Jon and Trevor were used to singing together and sharing the stage. Several good songs on BG and some did get ample air play. So thank you Jim, the journey continues ❗😎

The very first CD I ever bought. I still have it. I also bought it on vinyl probably 10 years ago. Very underrated album that gets a lot of grief from the Rabin Haters. I'm so happy that my musical tastes are diverse enough to appreciate what both Howe and Rabin had to offer as I enjoy both eras of the band equally. Glad to see the love for this album in the comments and the vlog. The stand out track on Side 1 for me is Shoot High Aim Low. Disappointed ARW didn't break this song out during their touring run. I did see Yes perform it in 1988 on the Big Tour which was also the first time I saw Yes. As for the history of the making this album, it was tough album for them to make. Rabin and Anderson clashed in the songwriting. Anderson wasn't around for the songwriting on 90125. His songwriting contributions on that album was more in the vain of clean-up. Big Generator took around a year longer than expected to make due to some these conflicts.
@JJ8KK
@JJ8KK 2 года назад
I have to second your comment re: Chris Squire's _less dominant_ bass playing role in most YES songs following the Drama album. It was honestly the #1 thing I looked forward to in YES creations since the first time I heard them: how he intended early on that his contributions would heavily colour their overall presentation. I L O V E D I T. As his contributions receded more into the background, I began to lose more and more of my fascination with YES. The talent was there, but it began to lack that big smile component for me. Just saying... :/

Glad to see you getting back to the Yes catalog. Good 3 album run with Trevor Rabin. Looking forward to your getting to the last one, Talk. The final song will blow you away. Enjoying Big Generator though. Some people believe that Marillion was responsible for bringing prog back in the 80s but it's my opinion that Yes got the movement going strong with these 3 albums. Not the Yes of the 70s but thanks to the genius of Rabin, they set the course for prog to grow. Evidence of his overwhelming influence can be heard in his sole album, Can't Look Back. Too bad this was almost the end of the the great releases. After Steve Howe came back, the only albums of positive note were Keys to Ascension. . Just my opinion.

To be fair to Marillion, their first EPs and albums were a good 4-5 years before this came out. In fact, the first wave of neo-prog was starting to die out when this album arrived. This helped bridge the gap during what is considered the dark ages for prog, which is about 1983-1993.

I also agree that Big Generator is better than 90125. It didn't sell as well because it didn't have that one pop single hit that 90125 had, but for long time YES fans it had more of the experimental element that earlier YES had in abundance. And of course, it had *I'm Running* on it :)

Personally, I think this album is a few steps above 90125. It’s more progressive and more cohesive to my ears. It also showcases Trevor Rabin’s chops, influences, and his penchant for fusion jazz-rock playing, especially in places like the I’m Running solo. That’s pure Al DiMeola territory. What Steve Howe was to classical Baroque style melody, Trevor Rabin was to fusion. Completely different styles, but no less important to the band’s sound. This is probably my favorite of the three Rabin era Yes releases. Glad you liked it!

I recall buying this when it came out back in 1987 and being quite blown away by it. For me it was a step ahead from 90125 and the guitar/drums in particular were really prominent with Trevor Rabin in particular shredding it. Jon Anderson had some really aggressive tones in his voice and sang his heart out. Almost Like Love has shades of the Time and A Word era in it for me, updated and re-vamped for the 1980s. Listening to it now is hard because it's so 'of its time' with a harsh and trebly production that is rather shrill to my ears. Big Generator took forever to make and a variety of producers came and went as Yes fractured and couldn't agree on a recording venue. Early demos have a completely different feel to the finished album. The delays ensured that the momentum 90125 gave them in 1983/4 was lost. It was a comparatively poor seller compared to 90125 and many of the new fans hooked on 90125 had moved away from the band. Had it come out in 1985 as planned it could easily have been as big, but once again Yes failed to capitalise on success - which has been a common theme throughout their career. Still a really good album though.

Hello Jim been a while I'm glad to hear you go through this album and It suffers from a couple of things first of all side one basically is the Trevor Rabin album featuring yes side two is more complete in my humble opinion. But the biggest problem with big generator is that it came out two or three years too late Trevor Rabin decided to use a very early type of digital mixing and he used it from beginning to end on this record it may be the first album totally recorded in digital. It took forever to mix and there was too much time lag between the success that they rode from 90125 to this album also by the time it came out Diane Warren was the sound everybody was dying to have on their records

I overall prefer 90125 but Big Generator has some highlights on both sides imo. The big highlight on side one for me is Shoot High Aim Low cause it's constructed like a Yes version of The Beatles' I Got a Feeling and shows that they can do minimalist playing as well as the more complex stuff. Rhythm of Love is pretty good too but I prefer the twelve inch Dance to the Rhythm remix where it sounds like Sheila E and Tito Puente and his band are sitting in with Yes. On the title track Chris is using a custom four string bass that was made so he could have the qualities of a five string bass on a four string. Trevor Rabin says Almost Like Love is Chris' riff but he thinks the song built around it isn't good enough. At some points Alan's drum sound reminds me of Lars' on St. Anger. He does sound great on Shoot High... though. The backing track for that was done at a historic castle in Italy.

"Almost Like Love" sounds Like "Slow Train to Dawn" by The The and "Let Them Talk" by Elvis Costello combine with little Julian Cope thrown in. I agree that the writing on this album seems more settled than the previous. Alan White was an underrated beast.

Really love seeing you get excited about this, it is nice to see to be honest! I don't like this album, honestly I find it really boring, with only 1 good track being Love Will Find A Way... And it's a shame too because I do like 1980s New Wave style music, I just don't think this is a good album and the next one is even more boring so I haven't continued yet (though I will be), still though I am really glad to see you enjoy something that I just don't - it's really interesting, that's the power of music! :)

Probably genuine Beach Boys influence too, they had a big UK following, Yes were fans and people were beginning to trade around bootlegs of the abandoned Beach Boys Smile sessions during this time.

Back in the day, I was so obsessed with the Yes of the 70s that it was difficult to hear them putting out more commercial music. I never really gave these albums (90125, Big Generator, etc.) the fair listens they should have gotten, as I was so upset that the Yes I had known was all but gone. These days I can listen to these albums with a less prejudiced ear and can admit that they are pretty good rock albums. Still can't come close to 70s Yes, though.

I got into Yes big time in the summer of 1985 between this album and the previous one. I would go to PDQ Records in Tucson and buy Yes and other prog lps for $3-6 dollars used. I remember waiting and waiting for this album to come out and I saw them on this tour in 1987 or 88. In hindsight I still love this album but 90215 is still better I think

This is the record where I became disinterested in YES, too off the farm for me. I was the BIGGEST FAN from the Yes Album to Drama. The first two records are good, I'll take them over BG anytime, and 90210 is OK. ABWH is the only release after BG that I have heard in it's entirety, it is also OK. But, nothing lasts forever, even cold November rain.

As a big 90125 apologist, I thought Big Generator was a mediocre follow-up, trying to catch lightning in a bottle twice. I like it fine and there are some fun songs, but only "Shoot Hight, Aim Low" really gets my juices flowing. Better than Union; not as good as Talk.

I've always loved this album. The bass is super deep in places. I wonder if Chris used a five - string or just detuned? The opening tracks on sides one and two grab you and set the scene for the remaining tracks. I think my favourite is Shoot High, but Love Will Find a Way and I'm Running are also great. I don't understand the animosity toward this record.

Bought this album when it came out back then. It’s much better than the 90125 album. I quite like this album. Several very good songs on it. Rhythm of love Big generator; don’t like it that much. Shoot high, aim low; a personal favorite on this album. Almost like love; not bad at all
@spikeysnack

The musical themes they explored on this album were so different, sounded like almost nothing they had done before. The addition of pop keyboards and straight rock drumming changed the whole feel and transformed a prog band into a rock/pop band with Jon Anderson. Funny, most people don't think of Yes as a good time band, get up and go style. The Buggles influence, was still there but no punk sound as in Drama, and not so much Chris Squire as 90125. Big Generator did not become a top 100 album, but Rhythm Of Love the video got TV play because of its innovative style. Not a deep outing. On first listen I hated most of it. I thought they had cheesed out, but Shoot High, Aim low won me over, as it sounded deep and new, and the slow lingering harmony held danger and mystery. I wondered if it was about wandering around the desert high on psychedelics, a forbidden vision quest, but mellow. Side 2 was a bit better.

This is sort of a controversial album (but then again, everything from 90125 onward has that tag). After the success of 90125 the band couldn't agree on a cohesive direction and this record languished in development hell far longer than it should have (where the hell was the management?) As a result it was about a year or so behind the curve and never achieved the success it might have. I personally like Big Generator a bit more than 90125. The low points ("Love Will Find a Way") are a bit lower, but the high points ("I'm Running", "Shoot High Aim Low", "Final Eyes") are more of a return to classic form than anything on 90125 (save perhaps "Cinema", which was such an outlier.) And I had LOL at your "I'd like to hear Chris Squire's bass more forward in the mix," comment Jim. Think back to when you first heard early Yes and I'll bet you were thinking "That bass is too forward in the mix!" 😄
@JimNewstead
@JimNewstead 2 года назад
Did I ever say it was TOO forward? I loved his bass sound, and couldn't ever want it less obvious in the mix. To that end, Drama is perfect!!!
@yes_head
@yes_head 2 года назад
@@JimNewstead What's interesting about Big Generator is that it marks the beginning of Chris' "minimalist" phase, where he seemed to be going out of his way to avoid any of the flashy playing he was famous for (save a few exceptions like "I'm Running".) "Shoot High Aim Low" is a good example of this.

Yes had something special to say and they said it .. But then came Relayer and Yes lost it. The earlier stuff was far more original and Ok yes was still special.. but no they never re-captured that spiritual magic that only YES could express.
