Tell me about it...
A lot of people were asking about it so... Here you go:
0:23 - 0:30 is from Peaky Blinders
0:30 - 0:44 is from various pictures from history and some covers of gentleman's fashion magazines from the Victorian Era
0:44 - 0:48 is from a movie called "Les Misérables"
0:48 - 0:56 is from a Series called "Trotsky" (2017)
0:56 - 1:00 is from 4k footage of New York in 1911
1:00 - 1:08 is from a USSR TV add " Компаньоны" ( • Soviet fashion advert )
1:08 - 1:13 is Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Leon Trotsky-Vladimir Lenin, Napoleon Bonaparte, Nicola Tesla, George Washington, Ludwig van Beethoven
, Sigmund Freud
, Winston Churchill
The song I used: • MGMT - Little Dark Age...

As a young kid, I always wanted to wear a suit and tie. Growing up wanting to put on such attire like those figures, I was always told that it is not in our place to wear one. That it is not in our "class" to wear one. Now as an adult, I put on such attire of three button coat and suit and tie. But where I am from, this is either frowned upon or rather you'd become an object of ridicule amongst the norm. Why? Because its apparently "out of place to wear such a suit". They say it's not in our standards to wear such especially for our generation. Sometimes they say you're putting up airs or showboating for wearing one. But I ask, who the hell set the standards of what is "normal", or considered "tolerable"? Who the hell told us what to wear and what we must follow the trend? Tik-Tok and their influencers? Why are they so bothered that when a few people wear something like a suit and tie? Since when did ties became an eye raiser? Must we be obedient to a cabal of modern influencers? I say wear what is making you happy, not because of some cringe trend that blends you in the crowd. If we let some lousy cringe tolerating conspiring app be our trendsetter for our lives, then we really have let ourselves into the dark ages.

In my institute they told me to take off my jacket because "it was hot." Then you looked at how they dressed and I could only see ignorance in their looks, lost and believers that they were right. May God help them as soon as possible. I hope that next summer they have reconsidered at least a little.

Interesting fact: the photo at 0:31 is a photo of some of the RMS Titanic’s crew members that survived the sinking. The man that is 2nd to left on the first row (lowest row) in between the men with 2 mustaches, his name was Frederick Fleet, he was the lookout that spotted the iceberg and yelled on the phone to the ship’s officers “Iceberg Right Ahead!” When he spotted the iceberg. Before he got onto a lifeboat he helped many escape off the ship during the sinking and helped with many court sessions discussing what happened that night. He died in the 1960s by suicide. I once wore a suit and tie, as I took a walk outside people were judging me cause they thought I was a show-off. I find modern society's fashion and mindset very disappointing. Edit: If anyone is wondering why, it's because I live in a third world country(Philippines). People here don't wear suit and tie as an everyday outfit, rather we are more into western influence like modern clothing. Even our president wears polo shirts for special meetings and public announcements.

As a girl myself, today's fashion really is bland. The amount of ridicule I have faced because I don't like wearing jeans is tremendous I even wore a simple dress and I was made fun of for being a show off Even make up is boring. You have the opportunity to play so much with colors and all you do is make your face more "earthy"? What's the point of make up then? Just to hide your imperfections? @BloodInTheStrawberries
@BloodInTheStrawberries 2 года назад
A lot of people wear makeup to hide imperfections, that's what it's been used for for centuries now. It's really only recently they started to get a lot more creative with it, before it was used for enhancing a natural look or for making sure your skin looked better. It's quite literally the point at least in West culture- There is nothing wrong with liking it natural, but there is also nothing wrong with being more colourful and expressing yourself more. In the end you should wear what makes you comfortable, happy, and be able to express yourself. Don't listen to other people for calling you a show off, you want to look like you just popped out of the Edwardian era? Or pure girlboss and wear that awesome dress? Go for it, if they call you a show off bask in that energy and own it. It's not your fault that they cannot handle it and are petty. I'm sorry people are put you down, it's hard at first to ignoring rude people but as long as at the end of the day you're happy, and what you wear makes you confident, then truly you are the winner here. Be extra, you only live once.

Honestly, it's kind of my dream to have my wardrobe consist of 1800s - 1950s era. Especially military uniforms. I was never interested in serving in the military but I am a fan of their fashion all those centuries ago. I don't want to be judged but one of my goals is to go out in public wearing a German uniform WITHOUT a swastika band, of course. I am not a fan of the atrocities of the Germans but I can't get over how good they looked. I mean, even the video itself literally says that the good and the bad of the past all shared the trait of looking good. I don't care if I get looked down on. I don't care if I get called a "Nazi." At least I am not ashamed to bring back tradition at a time where technology and modernity has killed it... obviously I am talking about clothes, not Nazism. I want to bring back real men's fashion. Man. Even in the 60s-70s despite the mass wave of counter culture, men dressed and acted more traditionally masculine. Just compare the way a man walked and carried himself back then with long flowing hair open chest of hair with fashionable chains bearing against him and a nice pair of pants and sunglasses. Men had nice sturdy and reliable boots and several other companies such as rock port that made durable shoes for walking. And don’t even get me started on the variety of band t shirts that would go well with a fine pair of bell bottoms. There was a certain ruggedness of masculinity felt amongst the standards of Americana. I wish I could see those times in person and live through them but albeit I am still grateful to be able to go through em with pictures of my dads old polaroid. But compared to today when people go out all I see are sweat pants and sneakers. Nobody puts any effort into anything. We’ve become a culture that has lost swagger, class, power, and elegance. How you dress is a statement and a reflection.

Everything you described, except maybe bell bottoms, people still wear in America at least. I live in the South and see people dressed completely out of time like that everyday. There's nothing wrong with the changing times and fashions; just because you don't like it as much. The people that buy modern clothes and dress that way do it because they want to. Much the same way the dude who looks like he hasn't bought a shirt in 50 years dresses how he wants to. Your idea of "traditionally masculine" is also sketchy at best. Masculinity changes WILDLY from culture to culture, time period to time period. For example, the Greeks. In ancient Greece it was seen as masculine to be: Homosexual or at least bisexual, smart, small dicked, naked, beautiful, long haired, fit but not too muscular, etc. These are not things seen as "traditionally masculine," but to the Greeks they were the EPITOME of it. If you were a big hairy dude with unkempt hair roiding out all the time, they would think you're ugly as sin. So what I'm saying is, don't worry about it, it changes every 20 years anyways; its all in your head really.

I think there’s a deeper reason why this kind of stuff fell out of fashion. Suits and nice clothes indicate a degree of wealth and pedigree. It’s a status symbol. It’s a clear indicator of an “in-group” and an “out-group”. You could tell someone is powerful and wealthy just by what kind of hat they wore. In a way, this made them target. In times of intense social strife, like revolutions, it was extremely easy for someone to tell who was who just at a glance. The guy in boiler suit and flat cap was poor. The guy in the suit and top hat was rich. This began to change after the Second World War. I think there was an unconscious push to homogenize the culture of the classes. I don’t think this is entirely unfounded. The second largest military and economic power in the world at that time was the USSR, and they had an interest in agitating for revolution abroad. So, the rich and poor would dress the same way, or at least, they would wear similar looking clothes. This might “bring people together”, so to speak, make the class divisions less painful. Of course, the divisions still exist, only now you can’t immediately tell who’s who. In the 18th century, if you saw someone like Marie Antoinette, without knowing anything about who she is or what she does, you would see that she dresses extravagantly compared to everyone else. Without even knowing her name, you would at least know that she was rich, and probably powerful. Compare that to someone like Mark Zukerberg. If you had never seen or heard of him before, and met him on the street, would you think that he was rich and powerful? He would just be another young guy in jeans and a t-shirt. He’d look no different from anyone else. A lot of people in the 21st century flat out deny that there are class divisions. I think part of this is due to the fact that the rich don’t “act rich” anymore. Everyone wears tshirts and gym shorts, whether your a McDonald’s worker, a college professor, or a multi-billionaire. Or at least, that’s my theory. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

No one replied to this, but I like this analysis. A lot of CEO's seem to dress like their employees to appear more on their level, to influence them into thinking that they are just like them when in reality they are so much more wealthier. I also think that maybe status was much more important back then, so even the poor would dress nicely to appear more wealthy, and in turn more powerful. Now people just want comfort and don't care too much about their outward appearance or status.

The key to pulling off the look nowadays is to either completely full send it or just take inspiration. A black wool coat never looks bad, and they make ones in more modern styles. There are literally tons of casual button down shirts that look better than T shirts, or even baseball tees (the ones with the differently colored sleeves, not a t-shirt with a team logo on it), henleys, polos, etc. You can find wool slacks, a nice pair of chinos, dark wash jeans, and all sorts of pants that look nicer but aren't too 'dressy'. A pair of leather boots in black or brown are good to cap it off. Earth tones, subdued colors, those were also hallmarks of 20th century fashion. Hell, peaky blinders has given me the confidence to wear a flatcap around and I've gotten compliments. We live in an age that supposedly broke the rigid social standards of yesterday, but that doesn't mean we can't still follow them. You just need the confidence to break with the crowd a little bit.

I am a proud wearer of a suit and tie every day despite still being a high schooler. Morning wear is occasional, but no one is to stop me. Social class is not much of a matter of attire as it was previously, so why not wear a bowler hat or top hat from time to time!

I know I'm one of so much amazing people here that also got to wear suits and shirts, but honestly it surprises me how people think it's a bad idea, that it doesn't make any sense, but they all seem interested and it seems to catch quite a lot of attention. It also seems to represent "right-wing ideals" as some people told me, specially because on the eyes of many people it's something only bankers and lawyers wear. I always look with amusement these old films like Citizen Kane or Once Upon a Time in America for an instance. All these people, be it a millionaire or a barber, always had a sense of class and gave a good image. And I ways looked with amusement, how could it be people had changed so much? I always had a passion for these suits, the ties and usually white shirts. The black suit shoes and the classy belt. It represents the peak of human... excellence, represents our level, our respect. Nowadays people seem to only care about fame, money, what the rest of people think of them and being comfy. They do not care about their life, their image, their self-respect, people only do what's easier to them, which is to follow braindead people on the internet and copy them. One may live in today's times and have to adapt to them in many ways, but class, respect and tradition is something never ought to be changed, and I'm so glad of staying that way, and I'm only 19. Hoping for the day I get to wear a tie and a proper suit.

Now, this is a matter of perspective, I don't know if this video is about what most the ones like this are, but regardless if it is or not, remember, we too are closing in on another age of greatness, break throughs and wonders, don't compare an age to another, since todays great men and women are yet to have shown themselves, I hold my achievements today as nothing more than experiences, but tomorrow the world may see what I've learned.
