Episode III covers the final part of our 450km expedition across the Little North. Join us as we continue our journey down the Throat River to its confluence with the mighty Berens River. The narrow headwater streams slowly broaden and give way to wide swaths of fast moving water as the Throat snakes its way across the Little North. The Throat still has plenty of challenges and surprises in store for us and our struggles are far from over...
LITTLE NORTH chronicles a 450km canoe journey across Canada's Little North, a vast wilderness sprawling for over a million square kilometers in the northern reaches of Ontario and Manitoba. The adventure is centered on the Cat and Throat River watersheds of Northwestern Ontario. In an attempt to retrace portions of a long forgotten fur trade route, we paddle upstream on the Cat, cross the seldom travelled height of land and then descend the Throat from its headwaters to confluence.
The area is steeped in first nation use and some sections are still traveled to access hunting and fishing grounds. Other sections have been lost to the ravages of time, and retracing these historic routes is no easy task. Few travel the remote waterways that crisscross this expansive wilderness, but those who do, are rewarded with unparalleled solitude and seclusion.

Yes thank you for sharing this amazing adventure ! And congratulations for the trip , the video editing, the courage it took not knowing what was coming !! :-) Small silly question : I am wondering if this would not be easier with kayaks ? K1 or K2 ? Is it because of the storage ?
@ExploreTheBackcountry
@ExploreTheBackcountry 2 года назад
Kayaks would likely be much harder. On a trip like this you have many different waterbodies and obstacles to cut through. A 16ft prospector canoe is one of the best all around hull designs for paddling large windy lakes efficiently, dragging through creeks and punching through rapids. Primary advantages to a canoe are cargo capacity and ease of portaging. A canoe with a properly positioned yoke is perfectly balanced to portage. This is exceptionally advantageous when doing something like a bushwhack portage. Simply hop out of the canoe, roll on you shoulders and go. You are also in and out of the boat a lot so an open cockpit makes it easy to quickly hop in and out through shallow streams or at portages. The addition of a deck creates a hybrid system while saving the added weight of having a closed singular hull design. Kayaks were developed for large open bodies of water, with new variety of hulls in the last century being developed for anything from flatwater cruising to rapid running. However, these hulls tend to differ quite dramatically depending upon use and sacrifice factors such as speed for maneuverability in whitewater or lakes. The hull deign of the canoe means you have a greater versatility in use with the singular design as it performs well in a variety of conditions. In terms of speed, Canoes and kayaks are both displacement hulls; their top speed is a function of their length. The longer the boat, the faster it will go. It takes a good tandem crew to efficiently move the canoe . The learning curve for kayaks is gentle at the start but it gets steeper as you learn. With canoes, it's just the opposite, but it takes equal discipline to master either craft

We made a bunch of hot chocolate on this past years big trip. It is so satisfying when you're chilly after a long day of paddling!

Epic!!! Is your canoe TuffStuff or TuffStuff Expedition?

TuffStuff Expedition. It's been through the wringer haha. I did some spot patches last year, but a full hull gelcoat repair this year. The weave is still strong as heck and the canoe is ready for another 5k of punishment.

@@ExploreTheBackcountry Thanks for the reply. I have no doubts about the durability, I know you are a hard core user! I was just curious which one a guy like you has selected, since you do also hard core portages where extra weight also counts :D

Great ending to a great series. Nice recovery on that one run at 45 minutes that almost got you; did you take on much water? It looked like there was a lot rushing in behind Leah; did the spray deck keep you dry?

Also, I liked your repair job. What was the product you used?

We took on a bit for sure. The deck certainly helps with the save, but water is still gushing in when you're tipped that far to the side. An open boat could have recovered, but it would have probably filled up. It's called Amazing Goop Marine Adhesive. It forms a gelatinous type barrier. It can withstand the punishment of rapids yet can be easily peeled off when you're ready to recoat with gelcoat.
