John Beaudin has been in major market radio (Edmonton, Vancouver & Calgary) for 38 years and a music journalist since 1989. He graduated from Broadcasting school as a newsman so he would have the skills to write about the artists that inspired him since he bought his first Elton John album as a teen. In the '80s Beaudin was the host of the syndicated radio show ‚”The Cross Canada Report‚” which had two versions (Rock and A/C). Beaudin was also asked to be a judge at the Juno Awards (Canada's answer to the Grammys) Twice. He has anchored every position in radio including morning and afternoon drive and was a Program and Music Director for The Breeze and California 103 in Calgary. He currently hosts the evening show at Move 103.5 (formerly QM-FM) in Vancouver and on iHeartRadio.

The Beatles, Hollies, Eagles, Yes, Fleetwood Mac, CSN(Y) and LRB all found it. Had a band in the 70's and 3 of us had a blend like that and I've never come close again. Harmonies blending like that is a gift from Heaven. I only saw LRB once; you could tell they set the bar very high for themselves; and it paid off. The performance seemed effortless; but that's because of all the effort put into it. Most people don't understand how incredibly rare it is. Later, I played keys in the Air Force Band in the 70's-80's. I wanted to open the show with "Lonesome Loser" which had just come out. The rest of the band didn't even want to do it; they thought LRB was a bit tame. I won out. When we opened with that acapella chorus, the crowd went nuts. The band stepped up their performance and got into it. Really fun.

Nice mention of YES in that list. They did indeed have some great three-part vocals with Jon Anderson, Chris Squire and Steve Howe. To this day, those intertwining vocals in the "I Get Up, I Get Down" section of "Close to the Edge" give me goosebumps. And of course the Beach Boys and Bee Gees belong on any list of great three-part harmony groups (regardless of what one thinks of the Bee Gees' disco period).

Cool to know about the “behind the curtain “ personalities and work ethic of the guys. Their harmonies are really sweet. And there’s not a clam in their song writing. Great band.

I've never been a really big fan of lrb. But they were special to a lot of people. I can say that they're song cool change strikes me deep on an emotional level.

It’s 2022 and my favorite song I’ve been binging on repeat is “Reminiscing”! 😍 LOVE THE VIDEO too! Delighted to watch these interviews to learn more about the original band members. I truly hope that they know that despite the drama around losing their trademark, their body of work still delivers eternal joy, happiness & butterflies to their lifetime fans! They should savor that. No one can beat the original LRB. 👏🏾👏🏼👏Cheers!

THAT’S why I didn’t get to meet Graham and Beeb when I met the band in Dallas after a show in 80 or 81. Wayne’s first tour. Still have the program from the show with autographs from David, Derek, Glen and Wayne but no Beeb or Graham, the two I mainly wanted to meet. Wish I could meet them again to complete the autographs!

Said Beeb, “We sang harder!” this was exactly what differentiated LRB’s harmonies from other bands.

Agreed. For me, that was the standout takeaway from this particular interview. LRB would never have had the same success if they just sang their 3-part 'smoothly', or 'sweetly', or 'choir-like'. There was always great nuance and dynamics at play.

Great interviews. I get where they're all coming from. I empathise with Graeham in that I was like that with my own little band. When the curtain closed, we had very little in common. Two of us were party boys, one a family man and I felt like I was a copper when trying to organise and clean up our act. Such is life in a band.

Oh, I love these interviews! The similarities we see with other great artists...the impatient and spontaneous Shorrock / perfectionism of Goble reminds me so much of the recording studio relationship between Lennon and McCartney in their later years. Also the absolute thrill that Shorrock, Birtles and Goble must have experienced upon hearing their vocal blend for the first time is exactly that documented by - and equally critical to establishing the future sound of - Richard and Karen Carpenter during the initial playback of their layered vocals during the 'Close to You' recording sessions.

Saw them several times in the late 70's ..early 80"s....They sounded better than than their albums. Amazing band !! and harmonies. Beeb is one of my favorite guitar players...SO TASTY!!

I play the song It's a long way there on my guitar. I have a different play through and lead version for that song. However, I was 100% inspired by the original version. I just have more time on my hands. The lead guitar in that song is a monumental achievement . I think one of the best leads to date.

The first time I saw the LRB live was on a Germany Tour as a support act with The HOLLIES in 1977. They were absolutly great and also their vocal harmonies. But the best vocal harmonies ever belongs to the HOLLIES. The Hollies had the best lead singer at this time - ALLAN CLARKE.

Glenn Shorrock was the MAIN INGREDIENT in the LRB, When He left the band sunk like a screen door on a Submarine. ALL THEIR GREAT SONGS WERE SUNG BY GLEEN.

Not a chance. Glenn was good, but, elevator music good. Farnham was head & shoulders better than Glenn. Listen to the live 1983 Melbourne concert & if you have any musical training you'll know the harmonies were tighter, stronger & audibly better with Farnham as lead. This isn't a knock on Shorrock. I loved the Shorrock LRB years. But, the Farnham years blew me away, especially, in live concerts. Farnham was just on a higher plain. I couldn't imagine Shorrock singing We Two. 🥺

I think Gobel's ego got a bit too strong when they fired Shorrock. He was thinking more about himself than about the band when he talks about his songwriting reaching new levels and needing a "better" voice. By that time LRB was an established and successful band. It had grown organically with fans loving the various members'contributions. Graeham's desire to be the next Eagles or Fleetwood Mac actually should have been a warning to him as those bands, also with multiple song writers, also ended up in destructive ways due to over-inflated egos. Seems to me that at a time when albums still had ten to twelve cuts, room could have been found for all the songwriters to participate. When one member decides he or she is the best and the others work for him/her that's usually the beginning of the end.
