This is how they should have cast the 1978 version Lynne Frederick as Jo Judy Matheson as Meg Rosalyn Landor as Beth Julie Dawn Cole as Amy Anne Bancroft as Marmee John Moulder Brown as Laurie Olivia De Havilland as Aunt March WDYT?

Ice Kokoro actually no. In the book, Jo said that when she walked into the shop to sell her hair, the barber said he didn't care about mine, it wasn't the fashionable color, and he never paid much for it in the first place. The only reason why he even did take it was because after Jo told the barber what she needed the money for, his wife (who was eavesdropping) stepped in and told the barber to think about their son who was also in the war. The barbers wife then convinced him to buy Jo’s hair, but for the low price of 25 dollars. Back then other people might have gotten 50 dollars if they had the right color hair or whatever.

What's great about each film is that they are a perfect reflection of the time period in which the films are made. Each generation deserves this story and I love how every filmmaker has told it a bit differently. Greta's version will reflect a different style and vision that is unique to 2019. And I love that they are continuing with what the 1994 version started: a woman writes, directs, and produces.

Buttercup Coffee Hi ☕️ Personally, from the 2019 version I appreciate d the photography and the warm colour of the images. The interpretation of Marley Streep must be underlined, she is always best! For the rest, the cast has been not well chosen and the interpretation is not great as in 1994 version. Dialogues ( in Italian ) are aggressive and they don’t reflect the historical period. The flashback is a good idea, but I don’t like the way Gewen organized it: all the psychological and emotional relationships ( Jo-Beth, Marmee-daughters,Lory-jo...) are not curated as in the novel and in all the other versions. I’m so angry, because the new generations must always have a reduction of concepts to understanding something or learning something else. The must read, the should love read and complexity of feelings! 🥰 Sorry for my English, it is not my mother tongue 😛

That wasn't the line. The line in the book was "If wearing my hair up makes me one (a young lady that is) I'll wear it in two tails till I'm TWENTY. Not 100." And honestly, I liked the scene in the 1993 version better when she reveals she cut her hair. There isn't a lot of fuss and explanation. She just says she sold her hair and there is just a look shared between Jo and Marmee and a hug. That's enough. Its a beautiful, heartfelt moment between the two characters.

Yes there's a genuine feel to that version. Having Jo narrate the story throughout the film in such a sincere and gentle tone, is also a great quality and allows us to experience her internal thoughts and emotions. I think that really makes us connect with her better as Jo is the rough/tough sister and may not display those feelings overtly.

While the 1978 miniseries doesn't have the elegance and detail of the films, it is still quite watchable. I liked seeing Amy actually praise Jo for her courage in selling her hair. The book did not have that line, and I think young Amy would not have been mature enough to say those words. But I'd like to think that Jo's example helped contribute to the more mature Amy later on. The success of the miniseries lead to the network attempting a regular series -- continuing where the book ended, but it wasn't as good.

Thank you for including the 1978 TV miniseries with Susan Dey as Jo. It shows an Amy who expresses her admiration to Jo for cutting her hair--a sign that she is maturing. Another interesting moment is when Meg stands up to Aunt March for choosing John. Aunt March disinherits her but later tells Meg she is back in her will on the day of her wedding. In the book Aunt March does not change her mind although she secretly arranges a generous wedding gift for Meg and John.

Anthony Robertson that doesn’t mean they couldn’t have at least attempted some historical accuracy.

😂🤣😂 Million dollar productions had adequate budgets for costumes, not low-budget TV shows on small low resolution TV screens.

Chris Jenkins - I agree, she is my favorite Jo. Probably Winona coming in as my 2nd favorite.

Do u really got paid that much for hair in that era?

Pretty much. People didn't wash it more than once a week and brushed it daily, so the hair didn't get fried.

God, Hepburn was too old and the acting was so heavy handed! Could never watch that version at all! June was also too old, but comes across as more sincere in the role of Jo in my favorite version of this story. The '49 version has something that the others don't, I like all of the men. That's the thing I dislike most of all in the other films, the men are uneven, or not worth mentioning.
