In the years after the Civil War, Jo March lives in New York and makes her living as a writer, while her sister Amy studies painting in Paris. Amy has a chance encounter with Theodore, a childhood crush who proposed to Jo but was ultimately rejected. Their oldest sibling, Meg, is married to a schoolteacher, while shy sister Beth develops a devastating illness that brings the family back together.

And this scene right here is where you see the contrast between the past versus everything from then on. Everything is warm and cheerful in the beginning, but Beth's death changes the tone of every scene after. It's interesting how that's reflected in the cinematography by giving every scene after Beth's death a cooler, bluish lighting to represent how her death changed the entire family.

Even before her death it is already blue, so i guess it starts when they grow up. Indicating life wasn't as cheerful as it was, then the color grading turn back into sunny at the end of the movie.

Love all the thoughts in this comment section. You guys may have already seen it, but Greta actually said the warmer tones were to represent that golden tone of childhood memories and the blue was to represent maturity and reality.

Agreed! It's one of my favourite aspects of the film. Although yes, I can see how it can be confusing to those who weren't expecting it or aren't used to it. But also, it does show how good Greta Gerwig is at it.

When Jo wakes up the second time looking for Beth, probably expecting she was downstairs because that already happened before, but was faced by the hard truth of Beth's death, I just lost it.

I cried through almost the whole movie. There was something so beautiful and bittersweet in the whole story, told this way, and not in chronological order. Greta Gerwig is a genius ❤️

When I saw this I was sitting behind a mom and her daughters. One of the girls was about 8 or 9 and she turned to her mom after this scene and asked sadly, "Mama, what happened?" and I was already a wreck and that made it SO MUCH WORSE

I remember sitting in a cinema and watching this movie with my Gran when it first came out. She loved this book as a child and i remember her handing me a tissue because we were both crying so hard. She passed away quite suddenly about eight months ago so this scene really hits close to home now

I think Beth's death in this movie was more sad than in the book. At least in the book you knew that Beth had accepted her death was inevitable, and she was okay with being sent back to her god. The grief here is a lot stronger, though perhaps that's more so because you can actually physically see it.

This scene was so heartwarming (between the two depressing scenes) their father coming back and me waiting the whole movie knowing Saul Goodman is their dad. I kept cracking jokes to myself everytime I saw him thinking he would say “I might think of going to law school” making myself funny

The fact that Jo was completely lonely and infact even grew envious of Amy actually made me realise that Jo had put in many efforts to become better and whenever she did, she got nothing but pain. She was the one who suffered the most, I think and the one who,this might be controversial, lost that charm and character development. In the book, she kinda dragged herself in life. Beth was the only one who truly knew and appreciated what and why Jo did things the way she did and losing her was like losing her identity for Jo.

I never really appreciated the timeline up until this point. As a girl who was raised on Little Women- this story and these characters were family to me so when I sat down to watch it and it started in New York, I was just disappointed. I thought it could never be as special as the previous adaptations, let alone the book. And From Greta Gerwig and Saoirse Ronan? Honestly I was just heart-broken. But I grew to like it, appreciate a different view of the story. But then this scene came. Honestly from there, I was a wreck. I cried throughout the rest of the movie. How seamlessly these two juxtaposing scenes conflict and contrast with each other whilst softly reminding you of what was or what could've been was honestly one of the most breathtaking and masterful pieces of storytelling I've ever seen. I cannot describe just how special this film was to me but I can say that it will go down in history as a revolution in both cinema and to little girls who will fall in love with this story for years to come, just like I did :)

I first watched Little Women at 26 without having read the book beforehand, though I already knew of Beth's death due to a particular episode of Friends. Now I'm 27 and reading the book for the first time, and considering how much I love Beth I cannot imagine how I would react if I hadn't known beforehand. 😩

Seeing this made me think of the last holiday with my dad. We never had a chance to celebrate Christmas and New Years Eve with him but Thanksgiving. This scene always brings me to the last holiday with him and cherish the happiest moments with him. RIP Dad 😢

I just think of how happy I’d be to see my dad walk through the door with but a limp….during that time it took weeks and some even never found out if their loved ones were among the dead….idk that scene just got me….and a mother losing her child is just….gut wrenching

Eliza Scanlen had an amazing turn in the drama by up and coming Australian female filmmaker Shannon Murphy released in the same year called Babyteeth. Unfortunately, she had a similar sad, tragic role.

Jo's reaction to Beth's death is very sad, of course, but it's Mrs March's crying that completely broke my heart. Yes, Jo, Meg and Amy lost their sister, but the first thing I thought seeing the part with Jo and her mother was "That woman (Mrs March)'s baby has died", which is even harder than losing a sibling. I know Beth is not a baby, by the way, by "her baby", I meant her child.
