Do intentions matter: A reaction to transcendental black metal? theneedledrop.c...
On Liturgy's latest album, the interplay and musicianship that made 2009's Renihilation so memorable are magnified with tons of syncopation and detail.
Another great addition to this band's style is their use of swells and crescendos, and it's not in the cliche post-rock way that we're all so used to. This band's dynamics are a result of musicianship and performing as a cohesive unit, not a ton of sound effects throw in during post-production.
Outside of that, the chord progressions of this album are rich and melodic. It's a sweet counterpoint to all of the harsh vocals, guitar chords, and crash cymbals. The moments where tremolo-picked guitars are layered on top of each other only enhance the effect.
There are a few underwhelming moments, and a couple detours, but the album is pretty dang solid! I'm loving the sound, the style, and the songs.
What do you think of this album? Love It? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh?

I'm with you on the uplifting, triumphant feeling of the chord progressions. Only a handful of bands can give me that feeling if invigoration and literally take my breath away: Krallice, Castevet, Blut Aus Nord (MV II), Deathspell Omega. Despite the negativity around Hunter and this band, they do have a special and unique sound that I hope they continue to develop. And yes, that drummer is a BEAST!

I actually thought this album had a really unique, fascinating sound that I wanted to come back to and continue to dissect. And by the way, LOTS of musicians who have released all kinds of great albums are pretentious windbags. Sometimes it just comes with the territory. It's about the music, in the end.

I couldn't agree with your review more, I got this album like a week ago and have listened to it about ten times already. The people calling this hipster black metal are a bunch of elitists that don't know what the hell they're talking about. This is one of my favorite black metal albums ever, and I've been into said subgenre since 2001 when I stumbled upon a CD copy of Emperor's "In The Nightside Eclipse" at my local record store and splurged five whole dollars on it lol

I read the manifesto before I gave any of their songs a listen, and that was a huge problem for me. They promised way more than they could deliver, and their ideas were based off a narrow and erroneous view of what metal is.
@13spite13
@13spite13 10 лет назад
The manifesto attempts to draw a parallel between black metal and the existential movement. Existentialism as a philosophy is very, very, very similar in theme and ideology to what is discussed in black metal (the death of God, anguish, depression, nihilism, subjectivity, and authenticity). Hunter wants to develop an ideology, and merely wants to associate some kind of aesthetic to it, but I think that the ideology counts more in their case... Either way, the emphasis is on aesthetics (the philosophy of art).I don't see the error in his view of metal... He calls Scandinavian bands Hyperborian because they created the 'sound' and overall 'aesthetic' for black metal, and we still use it as a standard to judge and recognize other black metal bands. These guys aren't trying to make a better kind of music; transcendence doesn't exactly mean that here. They just want to break down the conventions, yet keep certain aspects of the traditional ones (set by the Scandinavians) to create a newer ideology and aesthetic.This is exactly what metal did before....... It went against all normative conceptions of what art was, and developed its own identity. Ta-da.

And OMG, I was thinking the same thing about "Glory Bronze," it felt so, like, happy. Which is really weird. Usually I'm feeling like punching someone after listening to metal :) Whereas that song made me feel like the chick at the end of that movie "The Descent," when she finds her way out of that nasty cave and sees sunlight for the first time. Of course, all her friends died in there, but you know. She made it.

I read some of your manifesto in response to this band's manifesto. My logical view on it is that, regardless of anyone's meaning (taken away or intended) in regards to anything (music, paintings or paper cups)... there is a single true meaning to any and everything. In the same way that scientific theories are either proven true or false, so is (and will) everyone's theory about anything. As the universe and existence is singular by definition, we are subject to the opinion of "single," God

The bigger question is "Who is this writing for?" and I think a fine answer is "anyone interested!" I think setting out to prove something is perhaps a mistake, and maybe one that our bold writer has made! But I don't think the concepts he's really trying to express, the most important being contrast, are entirely incorrect. They're just a bit unscientific, and I think should be approached in that way. If they resonate with you: Great! If not: No bother, they're not meant to be taken wholesale.
@PipkinXIV
@PipkinXIV 13 лет назад
more in common with collaborative, optimistic kinds of music, like playing with other people, versus more introverted and perhaps exclusive kinds of creating, like songs that are contributed by one songwriter. Liturgy's songs are webs of influence and input, and by that nature, I think they are convoluted, and they become difficult to for a spectator to understand and, even harder to describe. So I quite like his pieces of writing. I think they're a gentle insight on how his band interacts.

TBH I'm not really big on their stuff; I much prefer Ved Buens Ende.... I don't think it's "groundbreaking" at all because of the tens of bands that did this kind of stuff before: the aforementioned VBE, Dodheimsgard, Fleurety (whose one of the members played with Mayhem live), etc. Anyway, this album was alright for me. I do think it lacks the emotion and passion that many other so-called "noisy, non-musical" BM bands have, though, but still - OK.
@current81
@current81 9 лет назад
dibble Word. Scandinavian bands like Ved Buens Ende, Mysticum, Dødheimsgard, Fleurety, Arcturus etc released stuff already in the 90's that was 10 times more groundbreaking for the genre than this hipster crap (which I don't even count as black metal or even related to black metal). In the 2000's we've had bands like Blut Aus Nord, Code, DsO etc to name a few, way before this american hipster wave hit the market, along with their ignorant, clueless fanbase. I wouldn't say the music in itself is "bad", just uninteresting and shallow.

This album is great. It is mixed very nice and has a lot of variation. To be honest i think most black metal listeners are just biased. If this band wore corpse paint and was from Norway they no longer would be "hipster". I typically stay away from American black metal groups because personally i just feel like they are sometimes posers (from using folky sounding samples & using black metal stereotypes) but c'mon this is good music and i think it is a pretty fresh take on black metal.

I wanted to make a comment here, finally having listened to this record. As someone who often dislikes self conscious items and convoluted prose, I recognize that many people, when framing their ideas for other people, must rely on analogies, because their ideas exist to convey a feeling they aren't quite able to describe with the words they have available to them. That said, I think this record is very much unlike black metal records. I think this is a ever-shifting kind of record, that has

The assumption that black metal isn't about anything is basically the root of our disagreement. I tend to see black metal, at the very least, as a style that evokes negative feelings, ranging from violent hatred to mild melancholy. Whether those turn to be positive to the listener, well, it's a whole new argument. But still, those guys are saying that their intent is to be positive. And that's what I feel is a strong digression from what black metal represents to most bands and lifelong fans.

It is great to hear something that stands out so much from the crowd, they completely lack the solemn atmospheric grimness that I love about black metal. It almost sounds up-beat, which while it is refreshing, it really is only your rather typical BM shit played higher up with a different tone. Like they're doing stuff that, while not necessarily bad, is not nearly as "out there" as they think. Granted, I only listened to five of the tracks.

@renminballer Apparently, most peoples' definition of "metal elitist" on RU-vid is anyone that doesn't think watered-down hipster metal is the best thing to ever happen to music. No thanks. If that's what an elitist is, I'm proud to be one. I'm gonna go listen to Ulver, Enslaved, and Emperor for black metal experimentation.

The vocals on "Returner" was the only thing that made me believe that Liturgy is a black metal band, their music has more of a loud rock feel than metal, but that's just my opinion. They're pretty good, but I'm looking forward to hearing that new Boris album. If you wrote a manifesto, what would it be about Anthony?

@mightywarriorx Totally agree with you, hipsters should NOT be playing black metal. Black metal has "bad" production for a reason - it actually makes the songs sound better, as in more atmospheric. I can't believe anyone takes these bands seriously, much less buys their stuff.

I think it's interesting that bands like taking the black metal style and making something different, I don't understand why people have to shit all over bands like this (even though their "manifesto" is arguably pretentious as hell) and just let variety exist. I love the band Deafheaven as much as I love Ulver, and I'm not ashamed to admit it, I like black metal style with texture from other genres, and I know i'm far from being alone

@theneedledrop ...pt2 (edit) I should probably switch "understand the existence of right and wrong" for "think in terms of right and wrong".. just to help keep the statement's wording agreeable. Taking this line of reasoning to art; I think it becomes increasingly disagreeable that there would be true meaning in the face of personal meaning. Though that is what I contend. In regards to what others consider "moral" views though, I think what I'm saying is quite agreeable.

I am not a music nerd. I don't study a lot of theory, but there are some bands that have it and some don't. I like Om, and hate just about every other "stoner metal" band. I like Neurosis and not Isis. I like Immortal, Gorgoroth and Darkthrone, and WITTR puts me to sleep. So, I will say, these guys sound like music that is written solely for the enjoyment of other musicians. I don't sense any of the emotionality or search for catharsis that moves other bands in a similiar genre that I like. And their manifesto seems to confirm that there is craftsmanship (which is better appreciated by other musicians) but absolutely no sincerity or emotionality. They aren't putting themselves out there, and the result is sterile and uninspired, if technically proficient.

I totally agree with you and I also believe there is many bands that actually sound way more black metal than this and they still have way better technique. Now, I am a musician, and in my perspective emotion and feeling its what drives music... this guys can be very "eloquent" in the way they try to portrait their musical vision, but for me they lack of honesty and emotion, making their music empty after all.

I don't agree with you. Suffice to say I am a music nerd, been playing and listening in a bunch of styles all my life and I still think this is garbage 😏 There's nothing to this for real musicians to enjoy. Not really. No complexity, nothing new or innovative, just some power chords and silly little bitch vocals. It's just all obscured with a raw tone so you don't notice how overly-simplified it is. Music can have a raw tone, it's just a different way for it to sound but...quite simply, this is just baaad. Bands like Immortal, Death etc use the raw tones but they actually combine it with some musical ability.

I agree. Standard Black Metal for the most part leaves me unfulfilled. And one thing I can't stand is a low-fi recording. So bands that can take the genre and infuse elements from other music is refreshing and satisfying for me. If you're NOT from Norway you don't have the right to play standard Black Metal....so that alone leaves only one option....change it up to something new.

sure, most black metal does feel negative. but we need to look at genres as objectively as possible, otherwise theres no point in having them. theyre supposed to be agreed upon by everybody. black metal usually has a lot of tremolo picking, blast beats, rasped harsh vocals, and there is usually a little more emphasis on atmosphere than, say, death metal or thrash. im sure you already know this, but these are the things we should go by, not feelings. making genres by feeling is too subjective.

Agreed. I'm not so much turned off by the band's pretensions (describes a lot of BM artists, actually), but by the music itself. It's certainly unique in sound, but I don't find it 'transcendental' at all. In fact, I can describe a number of other modern BM band's work as such (Blut aus Nord, WitTR, etc).

@theneedle "Moral nihilism" is an oxymoron. It's also non-existant. When translated within the laws of reality it simply becomes, "might makes right." i.e. If someone rapes your girlfriend, it's right for them to do so because they had the ability to do so. It's simply a fact that humanity as a species is aware of the existence of right and wrong. Most thinking that they are right and others are wrong. "Personal right" is illogical because one's "right" affects the realization of another's
