This is a beautful movie! As a straight ally, I think well done movies like this that aren't preachy are so important to carving a path for queer cinema to enter the mainstream. Ang Lee did a great job! His "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" and "Eat Drink Man Woman" are great too.

This was a very dark story, but also incredibly relatable for the fears of gays in 2005 especially in middle America. The fear of being hated versus tolerated only because you're closeted was and likely is still deep. Especially since Desantis became Governor of Florida.

There was also a huge contrast with their economic status. One was dirt poor and the other married into money . This made it it very difficult for the poor one to get away often while the other one could afford it as well as trips to go meet other men in Mexico.

I live in California and for the Mexicans/Latinos in this area camping is not fun. Many of us come from families that have done farm labor. We do not think that purposely going into nature an exposing ourselves to it is not fun. It’s a reminder of our days working in agriculture!! Just a little cultural lesson. : )

Gay romantic connections are like any other romantic connections. I'm not gay and I can relate. True love is so hard to find. love is love.

Anne Hathaway’s character DEFINITELY knew what was up with her husband Jack. Speaking as a woman, we ALWAYS know. Her character gave me denial vibes. She was very flashy and needed to keep up a facade with her community. Her explanation sounded rehearsed, something she had repeated multiple times before when people inquired on how Jack passed.

@mellowyellow403
@mellowyellow403 Год назад
@@MidsummerNightScream I mean each situation is different. Speaking for myself I have strong discernment skills. I can always tell if someone is withholding information. Plus everyone has a pattern, once that pattern is disturbed something is up. Regarding the characters in the movie, Jack was brazen. That man would have left his wife at the drop of a dime if Ennis would have given in and told him to come. Plus Lureen’s daddy knew what was up, I bet there were whispers around town but the family was prominent so everyone appeased them. JMO.
@dalee72
@dalee72 Год назад
@@mellowyellow403hat's why Lureen's dad tried to defy his own daughter and Jack by turning the TV back on and telling Jack that a "real" man watches football.

Thanks for this folks, I went to the critics review of this movie way back when and would not watch it again, I remember being very pissed off by the stereo typical idea that if your gay your either gonna be killed or live a life of misery, there was so much potential with the script, whereby the lads went on to live a happy life together and the women got on with their lives, anywho some recent films I have enjoyed were Gods Own Country, 120 BPM, Theo & Hugo, Strangers by the Lake, The Circle, and then some note worthy mentions from times gone by, A Taste of Honey, The Naked Civil Servant,

😀🤠So, the way you described 'camping' had me 🙄and 😄agreeing ! Because the idea behind camping being 'silly' was relayed in this way - made a lot of sense! I would want to know for sure what the insects are like at night too! Made me think of a popular tour of a cave, which apparently has the ground covered with bat dung - which thousands of roaches feed off...horrors! 🤣So, enjoyed your comments on the outdoors!

So glad I made a live. It has been forever and y'all are always so electric and funny and informative as usual. Its just so easy and natural with you two. Joseph is so expressive with his mannerisms. Nick's nonverbals are all through his eyes. Those eyes go to work, chile. Cracks me up cuz I'm Joseph is how I am in terms of being very expressive and my partner is very Nick. Subdued but the eyes are always the tell.

Enjoyed your review, the hats and the live today :) I remember seeing BBM at the time at the cinema, and I really enjoyed it. Tragic characters. Awful time in the world for these characters to live in 😢 I thought Heath did a great job as an American cowboy with that gravelly voice being that he was Australian, and only in his mid 20's. 😮 He was in a few indie Australian films that are worth seeing, particuarly "Candy" ( though it is a bit heavy). ** I think that "Pricilla queen of the desert" is worth a review for Pride month! 🎉❤**

Really guys-you are both such city boys. This love affair has been played out thousands of times through the centuries in the old west. By the way, sheep and cattle are allowed to graze on lush government land during the summer. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) rules public forest land. You have to understand the culture of the rural west to fully appreciate. I begin to tear up at the beginning when the first two guitar licks are played. I saw this 5 times and it had very deep impact. That’s all. Tom Bourland

I will say this was a good movie, but what I couldn't understand is what made Health Leger's character turn gay that night on the mountain? Regardless it was a heavy flick with alot of issues in it. My favorite scene is Jake Gyllenhaal's father in law challenging him about the television set.

10 Things I Hate About You is one of my favourites I like Brokeback Mountain, the almost indie simplicity of the story really influenced my film taste in adulthood; when I was young I felt it was interesting to see a portrayal of a "stoic" and inwardly tortured gay person, because the media had only showed me the "proud", excited and loving-life type (and I know now that part of me was like, I can't be gay because I'm not like *that*... but spoiler alert, I was a sad angry gay and a trans woman) I think the story is definitely made to tug at the heartstrings of straight people, with the "homewrecker" and "bury your gays" trope on full display, and yet it was formative to me and managed to speak to my closeted ass in spite of those things in particular, I think it was an excellent look at how society can force us into the closet to pursue "traditional" family life, causing pain and heartache for all involved when it all inevitably crumbles

Actually, neither of the two men were forced to do anything. They could have remained single. Ledger used his wife to work out his inner turmoil. His wife was his victim. Gyllenhaal used his wife for money and position. She was his victim. Yes, I understand the men couldn't be out and proud, they also weren't forced to marry. Single people existed. They would have been able to be together more if they stopped pretending with the women.
