1:44 Totally agree. the reason why i have forced myself to learn switch is that my body gets frozen if i am on goofy for the whole day. on less steep areas, going into regular just eases the tension so much, and readies the body for the next challenging slope

👍 great lesson, such an important skill to develop. It’s taken me literally years of praccy trying to replicate what I’m doing in my regular stance re: steering, body posture. Really struggled with switch toe-edge turns - always looking up hill to make sure I brought my shoulders round helped. Watched the video and put it to the test at Ski Liberty on the east coast. The conditions were super slushy and nasty, but I found a lot of success following your process. I started by traversing the run switch and getting a feel for carving on heel/toe side. This exercise was easy, didn't cause a lot of anxiety, and help build my confidence. I began integrating the 360 spins and also found it easy and not very stressful. After putting it all together, I was able to ride switch down most of the run with several falls. In my experience, I found that the transition from heel to toe was the most difficult part, and often where I fell. I tried to focus on putting weight on my front foot and pressing with my back foot's heel or toe. Unfortunately, I would fall thinking about it this way. What helped me most was focusing on driving the transition with my front heel/toe pressure, and my back foot seemed to follow. I'm going to continue to practice, but I wondered if you could share some insight to make the transition smoother. Thanks, I love your channel, and your teaching ability is excellent.

Okay so im pretty experienced with riding switch and one thing I have noticed a lot of people have trouble with when they start riding switch is they don't keep they're shoulders open and not square with thier board as they're headed downhill. This ties in a lot with what he was saying at the end about not leaning far enough forward. Its difficult to get comfortable with but I promise that as soon as you just commit to it fully and get your shoulders square as well as your lean figured out your switch riding will improve dramatically.

Ah, that reminds me of the first time I ever went snowboarding. At the rental they set me up regular because supposedly that was the "correct" setup based on the usual "surprise push from behind" test and it turns out I ride goofy. Only problem: the instructor never noticed it (in a WEEK of lessons) and so I was basically learning switch first. It SUCKED. Years later I get the chance to go back on the slopes, have the rental set me up duck so I could try out both goofy and regular and the difference in feel was night and day

@hackebeil20
@hackebeil20 3 года назад
switch is one of those things that are basically just a grind. it's not technically hard because it is just normal riding. it's a game of mental strength until you nail it. for me I forced myself to ride switch for an entire day on green/blue hills even though I could ride regular and could have had so much more fun. you just need to push through until your body adapts. Also Nev was very right about not leaning enough on the new front foot. A lot of bad switch riding comes from being switch without committing to it with your whole body.

Anytime I’m doing 360 turns like that to get used to riding switch, I generally catch an edge. I ride half camber half rocker. I’m not sure if that has something to do with it? My bindings are set up traditional duck with raised backs. My body just tenses up when I ride switch 😅

Thanks for this! Yoga shows me the lack of symmetry in my body, so going to try this out on the hill this season. Question - fdoes it help to change to more duck-y in your angles? I ride +15 front & +6 on the back foot. I don't want to over torque my knees if that has any inpact on angle decisions.
@SnowboardAddiction
@SnowboardAddiction 7 месяцев назад
That's a super large difference, you should move your back foot to at least 9 if you want to do that, but we would suggest taking your front foot to 12, Having the front foot +15 might feel good, but it will make you ride with your hips more open, which isn't ideal. You won't have those hips to be close until you open them for a turn or trick. So -9 +12 is the most standard and true stance:) But you do you!

Best is to set it equal in both directions for riding switch. I believe I’m set at 9* out on both sides. Some people say 12-15, but that felt to drastic for me. In the end it’s all rider preference. Try it and adjust it until it feels right to you.

I have a question for anyone that has some input. I’m trying switch for the first time this season. I got a new board, some bindings, and boots, and I had the shop set up my bindings for me that felt most comfortable for me. Now the thing is the nose of my board is a bit longer than the tail. I ride about -5 on my left, 15 on my right (I’m riding goofy). Should I even out my bindings so that both the nose and tail of my board are the same length? Would that help my switch riding at all? Or should I just continue to learn with the shorter tail end?

What you do is while standing, do a yoga squat where you put your hands together like a prayer, then bend your knees until your elbows touch your knees. The space that your feet are apart is your distance that your bindings should be apart from center of foot to center of foot. Now take notice of the angle of your feet in a duck stance and that is what you should set your binding angles at:)

@2022-Jenison Brown I think what Jason is asking is what is the best binding set up to ride switch. Some people have bindings set up like \ | or \ \ or for switch \ / this set up is best because then your feet are positioned the same riding goofy or regular.
@vitalhostage1719
@vitalhostage1719 3 года назад
Here's my view on this. Many moons ago when I first snowboarded, we had no instructions and no help apart from a guy in a shop where we bought our kit. His advice was good for the time but the snowboarding world has evolved substantially. Originally I was riding goofy with say +3 degrees (binding +3 to the right) on my left foot and and say +9 on my right foot. Effectively always leading with my right leg down the mountain. Absolute nightmare for riding switch. So my advice for what it's worth is to neutralise your angles (run say 0 on both feet or -3 left and +3 right) and let your body do the work not the angles. That way your body has an even playing field for making turns and doesn't preference the easy route.
