I would really like to see this video re-made with the Apex, or even still the Gio (since most people still don’t have the apex), and with Eos 3.1. Custom Direct Selects are key to busking now and I would like to see how other designers and programmers use them.

My biggest criticism of the Eos software is that it's never been a "busker friendly" desk, which is fine as it was always a theatre desk and it does that exceptionally well. Recent updates have really upped the game though. Magic sheets are brilliant and the quick selects help hugely. Having inhibitors set up like that is never something I though to do before for different fixtures. Which is odd, because i use them for other things, you'd think I'd have thought of that! I'll definitely be making use of them for this in future! My one big wish (and something I've asked ETC for countless times) is a "tap tempo" to sync my chases with the music. The current implementation is really clunky and awkward. At the moment I use a fader set up to control the speed, but it's not as good as a dedicated tap tempo.
@palmijonsson5801
@palmijonsson5801 6 лет назад
Tap tempo is possible and has been for a while. It's something along the lines of [Learn] + [Time] and then tap on Enter to match. This can be achieved by recording that to a macro, assigning said macro to a sub and then bumping the sub.

I think the ending description was excellent. The way EOS works is so fundamentally different than most other desks and I believe that they have a unique opportunity especially after he described the save this macro. Typically I would never live busk a show in the programmer. I always use cues. But EOS has the unique advantage of the programmer being sticky and fairly LTP. In fact the etc surfaces don’t even have a clear function (which is not to say that the first thing I make sure I have is a shift-clear sneak 0 enter macro). At this point it might just be the ubiquitous ion hardware that is keeping people from busking on EOS. However I would still rather be on an MA.

the programmer is great for doing busking. wouldn't know how else to make a nice show. A few faders with the intensities, a speed and size fader for the movements, some positions and a color picker and I'm ready to rumble. If I'm on Chamsys or Hog, that is. I just split my screen into programmer and execute page and I make 3 buttons: 1) with intensities of all lights to 0 (I call it a soft dbo), 2) a which releases all active executors starting from number 100 with rel. time 2 sec. 3) a button which freezes the movements (i.e. brings the speed fader to 0) That's all I need for a nice busking set up. All the rest I just make during a show. If the show is fastpaced, I tend to make a few quickhit strobe or bump lights. If It's slower I use a lot of slow color changing effects. The point I'm trying to make is that with chamsys for example the programmer is very high priority. I don't see how EOS is better at this. I like the motorized faders tho.

When you busy with cues will the cues come first? Meaning if I go to cue 1 use a busk then go to cue 2, will cue 2 load as it should or will the busk that you added still be present?

Add me to the list of people who think that it would not be Beyond The Pale for ETC to pay him to release that show file and and detailed write-up of the pieces and how they fit together and give it away to ETC's customers. Whether he can busk better than a 15 year old or not.

What do you do for the rate of the effects when busking?
@ETCVideoLibrary
@ETCVideoLibrary 6 лет назад
Hi Marcus - one option that a lot of people use is to assign 2 or 3 faders together as a target using the 1x/2x/3x size button in Fader Config, and then set one of the faders as "Effect Rate". Often "Effect Size" is used on another fader of the same gang. Hope that helps!

How did you set up the strobe rig button?
@rev_dude
@rev_dude 4 года назад
[Copied from my reply to Wesley Boyd's comment] This is pretty unintuitive and took me an entire night to figure out, but what you have to do is: -Create a strobe effect with everything you want to be included in the bump. -set all channels to the effect & record it into a preset (you have to hit the Plus FX softkey) -set the fader you want to preset in the fader config tab(Not Subs Tab) & give it the id of your strobe preset -set the dwell time to manual for a bump button or leave it on hold for a toggle I recommend doing {intensity} {record only} while recording the preset so you don't get anything caught accidentally

can you explain how the base cue and save this macro work
@ETCVideoLibrary
@ETCVideoLibrary 6 лет назад
Hi Quentin - rather than putting words in his mouth, we asked Zac for his answer. Here it is: "Save This macro is actually an update (but could be a record) that hits a designated Background cue. So syntax is just [UPDATE CUE 1/101 ENTER], and to work that cue has to active somewhere fader. Its purpose is to turn manual values into hard values - basically cleaning out the slate of manual control so that new, piled on manual levels, bumps, etc. have a clean place to start. Make sense? The concept of the Base Cue is to have a home base to which one can return, as a way to reset the stage when you've piled on too many things and need an escape; or (for a dance or DJ set) when the DJ pulls the music back to a basic refrain that they're using a bridge or their own reset, so they (and now you) can build back up; or (for a review concert scenario) it's a background state you can quickly revert to between songs or bands. For the reset option the macro would be a GOTOCUE #, where the cue number is your base cue and on the same list/fader as your SAVE THIS cue; for the background state it's a little deeper, where the base cue is on it's own cue list and own playback with a high priority, and the "active" or current cue or cue list is another fader (usually the main), and the macro would be to release the cue/list from the main fader, so that the background fader can take over. (and to keep going, for extra credit: if the latter case is one where i have a series of cue lists of predefined sequences or look-types, and/or for specific songs, I would also have a series of macros that load each list to the main fader; so, say, background fader is always hot with the base cue 100/1 - hit macro to load cue list 1 to the main fader for the first song or sequence - when the song is over, hit the RELEASE MAIN macro to dump the active cue list and revert to the background - hit the macro to load whatever cue list i want for the next song - hit go for it to take over - repeat until it's time to go home)."

Hi. I don't get the "and to work that cue has to active somewhere fader" part of the "Save this" description. I can only get it to turn manual values into hard values If i'm standing it the cue i'm updating. Can you give further hints? Thanks for great inspiration. -Henrik @@ETCVideoLibrary

Is there an out-of-box show file and visualizer file (preferably Capture AND Aug3D) tha tis presetup, with a walk-through on the busking basics and comment ideas shown here? If not, this is the big miss of ETC IMHO. It's taken years to get EOS family consoles to do some simple effects that other consoles do really, really well (I won't start on the pixel mapping stories, as you know them..) This is by far one of the better videos and is relevant to any performance IMHO. If your serious about lighting you should be practicing with these types of assets, and not having to build everything from scratch and "harvest tribal knowledge" to up the bar. ETC needs to empower the community a bit more. The ETCVideoLibrary has been expanded exponentially int he past several years, and I'm grateful for that, but I think we can do better. Maybe a show file / visualizer community sharing built into the consoles. Thoughts?

Hi Eric, I'd like to point you to the Busking tab on our Expert Topics page on our website: www.etcconnect.com/Support/Tutorials/Expert-Topics/Busking.aspx In The Introduction to Busking Concepts, David Kane takes apart his process for busking on Eos, and recently shared his "Flying V Rig" files with the "ETC Eos Family Console Programmers" group on Facebook, including an update to add the Augment3d file. (I would encourage you to join this group, in addition to the forums, if you haven't already) Next, I'll let you know there is a new tab on our Augment3d page: the Augment3d Light Lab which includes some prebuilt spaces with show files to help learn and play with Augment3d. This is not per-se what your are seeking, but a good new resource to help learn Augment3d without having to configure a space from scratch. www.etcconnect.com/Products/Consoles/Eos-Family/Augment3d/Augment3d-Light-Lab.aspx From my past experience, I would expect more tool, resources, and videos as Augment3d matures, but do remember that there is a significant amount of time, effort, and intellectual property that LD's and programmers share with us, and all of that earns them a living. We are incredibly grateful for them to share their tips and tricks, but I would not expect them to share all their magic with us ;-)

@@ETCVideoLibrary Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I will check out the expert areas. I did finally go through A3D intro videos last night (trying to teach my daughter how to so some lighting too) and found the A3D Light Lab. Don't get me wrong, I love ETC and the consoles and there have been great strides. I believe A3D will be revolutionary for many for a few "tactical" reasons, like blind parameter changes and POV focusing during live events. I certainly am not looking for all the bells and whistles LDs put into their shows. What I would like is some "good tutorial showfiles" that mirror some out-of-box stages. I believe in the A3D video it alluded to shipping beta with 7 or so "core" stage setups. Having a good "essential busking" show file for those stage setups could be a great community endeavor. I know you all were thinking of a shared repo and there are all types of implications there that diminish the feasibility of getting that off the ground. Educators/schools, churches, small venues, etc. all need to learn the console sometime, and what better way than hands-on with "accelerators" rather than "scratch builds". That's only the point I was making. Perhaps it is a "value-added feature pack" of show files. I bet some LDs could make some nice cash while we are sequestered with Covid-19 pursuing something like that on their own too. Example.. I program x-Lights for Christmas. I don't do every song from scratch, I buy a few templates and apply common bits and pieces. It certainly is IP, but I rather see it come from ETC to a set degree, and others could take it to "that next level". Imagine AI driven imports. :)

Though today's lights do have great movement and color, you still cannot beat an old system that you use fader's to run the show. You have to be one with the beat and you must have a groove and be just like one of the band members on stage. If you can perform like the band you can create your own mood by getting the people more into the music. Bumping buttons is not my kind of concert light show...Get into the groove!

@nickdelot4421
@nickdelot4421 6 лет назад
I'm only 15 years old and I'm already a better busker than him. Most of the effects he used came no where close to matching the mood of the song, his movement effects were too fast for what he was trying to do in more calm parts of the songs. He was always a bit late on doing big things when the song went into full intensity. He kept his effects running even when the song went into a softer part and even when the song ended. If your going to do videos for ETC at least be good at what your doing.

Ian McClellan I would have to agree with nick. I think this was a poor choice for ETC to publish this, especially with no voiceover. Although I will say busking in a visualizer without a loud PA is incredibly hard. For a 15yo nick constructed a better sentence and argument than you did.

Mark Amber Just reading this again, I do see Nick's point, and I do agree with him on how this was a poorly busked demo. If you do take the time to watch and learn from many of these techniques though, this video can be really useful for creating your own show file. His introduction and walkthrough are great, but his busking was off par. The point of the comment I made though, is that this simple hate being portrayed from Nick's comment is uncalled for. Additionally, I didn't say I was an adult, I am 16.
