Hey, Sean. I'll give this a shot. Ever since I was 16, I've always shared this phrase like my mantra; "People are my religion, because I believe in them." I'm planning on getting it tattooed on me, eventually. I only have one tattoo so far... Anyway, I try to have faith in people. I try hard. I've seen people do incredible, amazing, selfless things. But lately, I've been seeing a lot of the bad side of people. Mostly homeless people, who are in a really bad spot in their life. I work at a gas station overnight and get a lot of homeless folks. There are some good ones. There's this one guy who hangs out all night and acts as "security". Casper. He actually has been a big help with people who get out of hand. I hook him up with coffee and soda once in awhile. It's funny, the way he knows everyone. Always networking. He's a really compelling guy but I'm not gonna put him on blast in a youtube comment. He's working hard for a better life and has experienced many highs and lows. I have a lot of respect for the guy. But then there's the bad ones... Dylan has sticky fingers and spews these sob stories to lure you in to giving him what he wants. A few weeks ago, he came in to the store and walked around and as he was leaving, I stopped him and told him to empty his pocket. He pulled out like 5 candy bars. On a hunch, I told him the other pocket. He laughed and pulled out like 6 more. We went outside and I gave him a cigarette. We talked for a bit, he talked about how his father was "there, but he wasn't." The other night, he came in again. He wanted to buy a burrito but barely had more than a dollar. I had one of those Big AZ burgers in my backpack. I gave it to him, and told him not to worry. We talked for a bit while he microwaved it, and I felt myself accepting him. He does what he has to do, right? It's a hard situation. I was homeless around Phoenix, Tucson and Surprise myself when I was 18. I have an idea of what it's like, I'm just lucky I was young and dumb enough to garner enough pity to get help, and not have to resort to that sort of thing as often as others. Anyway, he asked me if we had any ketchup or mayo packets. We don't have them out anymore, because we're not supposed to prepare hot food due to COVID. I told him I'd go to the back and find him some. And I did. I was in the back for less than a minute. He goes outside, and he uses the little sauce packets and tosses them on the ground. That kinda pissed me off, like obviously I'm the one that has to clean that up... How's he gonna be like that? So I go outside and he turns around and he drops a hat out from under his shirt. In the one minute I was gone, he decided to take his chance to steal something, anything. I told him to never come back. He wouldn't look at me, or answer me, anything. Just last night, I was about to lock the door to go to the bathroom. As I change the "be right back" clock on the sign, I see a man walking up from the distance. I sigh and leave the door unlocked, so I can give him what he needs and then take care of myself. He comes in and asks for a... Honey Dutch? Some flavor cigar. He tries to pay with EBT and I tell him "I'm sorry man, we can't take EBT here..." Before I get to start telling him where they do accept it nearby, he gets so angry. So fucking mad. Tells me he wants his cigar, asks me what he's supposed to do. As I try to apologize, he starts grabbing things off the shelves. His reaction triggered a switch in my parasympathetic nervous system reaction or something (rate my reference), and I got furious. I came out from behind the counter and told him he isn't leaving my store without paying. Next thing I know, he's trying to bash me with the door. Like, holding it and trying to bash it against me, telling me to call the cops. I open the door, and he spits at me. He fucking spits at me. I had anger issues for a long time. I dealt with them in therapy. I dealt with them for a long time and I am proud of how far I've gotten. This action triggered something in me, hard. I swung the door open and I looked at him and I warned him to leave. I really didn't want to hurt him. I didn't. He saw my look and he turned and he ran. God, if it were up to me, I'd give every little snack and soda in that store away to anyone who was hungry for free. I hate myself for getting so angry. I hate how I'm losing faith in people. How do you keep your faith in people, Sean? How do you keep faith in yourself?

Thanks for doing this. I got to see you live twice, once in Baltimore and once at the Black Cat in DC along with a terrific performance by Kimya Dawson. Not sure if you read these but I wanted to relay why Small Red Boy is so important to me. I lost my cousin about 10 years ago. He would've loved your music. He was large and jovial but could unfortunately be subject to bouts of darkness and depression (as have I). To put it bluntly, I discovered his body about 6 weeks after his death. There is a reason we bury our dead. Anyway, I ended up with PTSD and being hospitalized for several weeks when my depression returned. I survived and 2 years later I met my wife ("True love will find you in the end" was our wedding song so thanks for playing that a while back). And 2.5 years ago our first child, Alexander, was born. I can see the journey I've taken reflected in "Small Red Boy" and god damn if it doesn't get me weepy everytime you play it. It really is a beautiful song. I tend not to reflect back on the traumatic loss of my cousin, who was like a little brother to me, preferring to remember him as he lived. But his death was the first one I experienced of someone younger than me, who I loved. And I was completely lost after it. But my sons (second one was born in October) are my truth and they've freed me from the shackles of despair giving me renewed purpose in life. Anyone else reading this, if you are going through a dark period, please remember that we all die once, but if we're lucky we live many times before then. I wish he was here with me and could meet my sons. They would've loved him as I loved him. After writing all that it seems tacky to make a request but if you do read this and know Pink Floyds "Wish You Were Here" it'd mean a lot if you'd play it. All your art has meant a great deal to me.
