The quality and shelf-life outlook for Salinas Valley produce items is improving significantly. A steady barrage of spring rain events and prolonged cool weather resulted in disrupted plantings, disease pressure, and fatigued crops in April and part of May. The rainy season is now essentially over, and it has been nearly three weeks since the last storm. Although some disease and insect pressure are present in some crops, the extended outlook on quality and shelf-life is better than it has been all season. Markon inspectors are actively monitoring commodity and value-added items and working with growers to secure the best product for Markon orders.
