Hello Gillian and Stephanie, My wife and I just watched your live Q&A from a day ago. We are happy to hear that you are heading to Portugal soon. We live on Sao Miguel Island and hope that you are able to visit the Azores while you are here. We love your videos and approach to travel. Ann

So right about air bnb tips. In Portugal, loved going along the Duro river ( bus, train)to the wine country staying in a small town farm stay, dinner with the family etc. Some of my best time in Italy, agri tourusmo near Lake Como - at Madonna ce Ceppi found on airbnb. Based there and then toured the area. Basque country, Barcelona, and north. I'm sure you have a list of your own. Thanks for your videos. Love you guys.

Sounds like you've had some really wonderful travels of your own! We really love those farm stays with families -- such a great way to get to know a culture.

@@OurFreedomYears @barbarahill4281 Can you share how you find farm stays? I grew up as a farm kid and actually looked at volunteering with WOOF, but since my 80 yr old mom will be traveling with me, can't do that right now.

i'm twice y'all gals's age & the 'might need to have family homebase' thing didn't hit until i was about 40 . . . i'd say i started travelling crazy around 28 (1st saturn return.) seasons change--there is great potential in documenting life on a 'homebase' & showing how it relates to travel . . .

Try taking the train or bus from Lisbon to Tomar. Beautiful town on the river with a Templar history, castle and convent, and charming parks and old town. We live just outside of town now and if you let us know when you might come we could meet up and perhaps show you some things. My wife and I enjoy your information and videos so thanks for sharing.

Hello, we watch all of your videos and plan on selling everything and slow traveling ourselves in 5 years or sooner (almost there!). Two things - 1, do you use the alltrails app for your hikes (can’t remember which app you said you used) and 2, we have tried to sign up for newsletter several times but we never get the confirmation email… anything else to try/suggest? Thanks for everything you both do and keep up the great work!! O&B.

How exciting! Good luck with all your planning. Yes, we use Alltrails in combination with Maps.me for situations where there is no trail listed in Alltrails. If you are able to send an email to ourfreedomyears at gmail.com, I will add you directly to the newsletter list. Sometimes Mailchimp doesn't work very well unfortunately 😅

Sorry we missed the live broadcast, but we watched the entire video and subscribed for the PDF tips on your website. Love it! We've followed your journey for three years now and love every episode. A question for you regarding renting a car in Albania. We are planning our trip there, and are thinking of renting a car for travel from Vlores to Bar, Montenegro, and possibly staying at an agritourismo location along the way. What is the likelihood of us finding a car rental company in Albania that has the vehicle drop off/end point set as a one way? Or are they more likely to require it be returned to the originating location?
@OurFreedomYears
@OurFreedomYears 10 месяцев назад
Hi Greg, nice to hear from you! Getting around in Albania is a bit of a challenge and hiring a car definitely makes it easier to explore around. I think chains such as AutoUnion would be your best best for getting a one-way rental. You can try searching with Qeeq.com Whoever you choose make sure to communicate about which countries you plan to visit as there may be some paperwork involved. Have fun!

Also, not sure of your past travels before you started this channel, but how much of the USA have you seen? Our national parks are great for hiking etc. If you haven't done much in the US, do you have plans to in the future?
@OurFreedomYears
@OurFreedomYears 10 месяцев назад
Fair question! We honestly haven't seen that much of the US aside from visiting friends and quick business trips. There are many wonderful parks so we really do need to add them to the list!

Do you ever use schwab? No ATM fees anywhere in the world.
@OurFreedomYears
@OurFreedomYears 10 месяцев назад
Unfortunately we don't have Schwab in Canada however our bank HSBC doesn't charge any overseas ATM fees. These days we use our IBKR debit card to avoid the 2.5% exchange markup charged by banks. 50cents/withdrawal

I missed this so am watching it now. My question as a follow up to the food/grocery question. Since you buy groceries and cook in your Airbnbs, do you throw what is left at the end of the month out, or do you pack it up and take it to the next destination?
@OurFreedomYears
@OurFreedomYears 10 месяцев назад
Great question! We've become pros at planning our grocery shopping and meals so that we have very little left at the end of our stay. We usually make any leftover produce and other food into travel day snacks. We sometimes bring along essentials like olive oil and vinegar if they fit in our luggage or we leave them for the next person.

Any thoughts on backpacks that are anti-pick pocket? The ones where zipper is on the inside that you have to take off to open. Any problems with pick pockets in Europe? Thank you. Love your videos
@OurFreedomYears
@OurFreedomYears 10 месяцев назад
We've never had any issues with pick pockets in Europe or any other region. However, we generally try to avoid crowded situations and keep a close eye on our belongings if we're in a busy place. It was a particular concern when we were in South America and there we wore our sling bags on the front versus the back and left our wallets and high value items at home. We don't have bags that are anti-pickpocket but I would certainly recommend purchasing something if it gives you more peace of mind while traveling.

Where in Eastern Europe should I skip?

It all depends on your personal tastes and whether you like big cities vs small towns, outdoor activities vs cultural activities, etc. We love smaller cities and towns with a lot of charm and great hiking nearby so those are the experiences we seek out. 😊

I have a non registered IBKR account in Canada (I'm also in Toronto). I have been digging around in the portal and could never figure out if these debit cards are for US-based accounts only. Do you top up the card with USD or whatever currency and buy currency, then withdraw from ATMs in the country/ currency you need? Did you apply from Canada or from abroad? the right IBKR link would help as their iBOT sucks :) btw - loving your tips!
@OurFreedomYears
@OurFreedomYears 10 месяцев назад
Hi Linda, it launched in Canada just over a year ago and has worked well for us. We applied online... if you can't find how just send a message through the App and they will send you the link or even just set it up for you. A person could convert currency ahead of time but we just take the spot rate at the moment of the withdrawal. They take it from whichever cash balance you have or even margin if you have it. 😃
@lindaplater9648
@lindaplater9648 10 месяцев назад
@@OurFreedomYears thx for reply- to get an IBKR debit card account can’t be under family/broker umbrella account like mine:(. Also, debit card is charged via MasterCard debit rate into CDN so ATM wouldn’t pull from forex AUD orNZD in account. Scotia passport visa has no charges for forex but will have to see what markup on actual rates when charged in CAD. I share your distain for bank fees and markups you only discover once you get your bill! Trying to keep it simple but these charges really add up on a longer trip in an expensive locale.

I found Lisbon disappointing and dirty/dingy though it does have some areas to explore. But you must stay/visit Cascais nearby. To visit Palacio de Pena stay the night before in Sintra - the Moon Hostel was new and just awesome. Also I thought Monserrate Palace was better than Pena (with Sintra base) - so luxurious and great gardens. I would spend more time exploring the Algarve than Lisbon. Also Porto was a bit nicer than Lisbon...get used to graffiti everywhere.

I don't understand why you guys throw away the food in your Airbnbs. That's not your food. Many hosts leave food to share with people like me. As a nomad, I love when there's left over food for me to raid. You could offer it to the host to store until you leave. Also, throwing away food seems so evil when there's people in need.
@fidelcup
@fidelcup 10 месяцев назад
They were talking about food that has been clearly sitting in the freezer for too long - freezer burned, opened packages that take up the entire freezer space. I'm sure they are not throwing away canned food or bags of rice/noodles.

Great point - thank you for sharing. If there is food that is unopened or is open but has been properly stored, we always bundle it up and leave it for the next guest. If there is any open food that wasn't properly stored and may have attracted insects or freezer burn, we'll dispose it.
@OurFreedomYears

@fidelcup - Yes, exactly. We would never waste food that is in good condition that someone else might appreciate.
