You can probably cover off the main sights of Bratislava in a single day -- plus it’s just a short train ride away from Vienna. Did we make a huge mistake by booking an entire month?

Hey, the ad that came up after this video, in my part of the world, was for technical education in Tasmania (TAFE) where my nephew Damian works. Cute.

That's some very targeted marketing! 😂

I think staying a month in a less expensive city is a great idea! You can easily get to other areas for a day trip but save money overall. It's certainly more relaxing to take long walks in the city, dine out and enjoy the waterfront when it's not as crowded. Looking forward to your recap video at the end of your stay!

We were a little nervous about spending so much time in a slower-paced city but we were very happy with our decision by the end. It really did help break up our faster travel and I would certainly recommend Bratislava to anyone looking for a rest stop. 😊

watched this the other day & loved this!! the park or 'square' w/the food tents & night venues looked like a perfect place to stay out late & meet a TON of people. i could easily imagine myself spending a mo in a place like this, how much fun it would be to meet locals. that chicken skin that was poppin' looked REALLY good & i still love the 'free rick steves' tours!! :) . . .

There was a great vibe as we walked around the old town...lots of events happening, very social.

Hello - could you possibly share your go to grocery list items and maybe what meals you make when eating at home? I would love a starter just to have an idea of what to grab in a foreign grocery store the first time you shop for the week/month!

This is an excellent question that leads to a fairly lengthy answer! I'll try to keep it brief but let me know if you have more questions. We usually try to stock up on breakfast items as a first priority. For us, that means green tea, coffee, oatmeal, oat milk if available, nut butter, raisins and fresh fruit. We now cook mostly vegetarian meals at home so that means a lot of salads, soups and stews with lots of fresh produce (whatever is in season locally), plus legumes and grains. We'll also make egg dishes like frittata quite regularly. We find that the oil and vinegar in most Airbnbs isn't the quality we prefer so we usually add that to the grocery list as well. Hope that helps!

we are considering Bratislava for next spring, so this was a timely video for us. Liked the airbnb for the most part.

Great video. . . We are planning an extended period in central/eastern Europe in 2025 after stints in South America and Schengen time in Portugal/Canary Islands. We visited Bratislava (yes, from Vienna!) for a few days last year and vowed to return for a longer time.

Such an exciting plan! You might have already seen all the main sights in Bratislava from your last trip but it could still be a good rest stop.

I haven't been there, but I know Slovakia has some nice mountains for hiking, if they aren't too far. I think it's a very good idea to avoid the most crowded and overtouristed European cities in the peak season!

It was certainly a refreshing change after the fast pace and crowded streets of Prague and Vienna. 😊

@@OurFreedomYears was a great little French restaurant that I really loved. It was a surprisingly enjoyable stay. I took the train down from Brno and was on the way to Budapest. A charming very walkable town
