Audio capture is the way that you take all that audio that’s going on in your church service, mixing it, and piping it into your livestream so all the people watching feel like they are right there with you!
Bad audio is the number 1 killer of your church’s livestream. Some common problems on live streaming audio are volume levels that are either super quiet, crazy loud and distorted, poorly mixed, buzzing, poorly eq’ed, flat and dead sounding, and out of sync with the video.
1. Capturing Your Audio
a. Computer Mic/Line Input - Almost all computers have an 1/8th inch line input on the motherboard of your computer. The line input is normally colored blue. You can connect a mixer’s XLR, 1/4” or RCA plugs to your motherboard’s line input with cables like these. I do not recommend using these connections unless you absolutely have no other choice.
b. Camera Line/Mic Input - Many cameras have one or more physical audio inputs. These inputs are typically either an 1/8th inch or XLR port. This will convert the audio into digital and most of the time will embed the audio along with the video out of the camera’s HDMI or SDI output. Your computer can then capture your audio along with the video when it is fed into your capture device. I do NOT recommend feeding your audio through your camera’s audio input.
c. Audio Interface - An audio interface is an external (and sometimes internal) hardware device that typically connects to your computer using USB, Firewire, Thunderbolt or PCI-E if it’s an internal card. My inexpensive go-to audio interface is the Behringer UMC202HD. If you have a digital mixer, oftentimes they will be actual audio interfaces in and of themselves. For example, the Behringer x32 is not only a digital audio mixer, it’s also a giant USB audio interface right out of the box.
d. Network Audio - On your Windows PC, you can install the Dante Virtual Soundcard and Controller software. This creates a virtual audio input on your computer that allows you to receive any Dante audio channels that are on the network you are connected to. Audinate, makes a very inexpensive yet powerful line of adapters called Dante AVIO adapters. These 2 adapters can take either a stereo analog XLR output from your mixer or a digital AES/EBU connection via XLR, like the one in the x32, and convert it to Dante.
2. Mixing Livestream Audio
a. Main Mix - The first and quickest way to mix your livestream audio is to simply capture your main Left and Right signal coming out of your mixer.
b. Post-fader Aux Mix - Another way to mix your live stream audio is using a post fader aux mix out of your mixer. A post fade mix is when the level going to your livestream is connected to the physical faders of the channels.
c. Pre-fader Aux - This method employs a dedicated person mixing an aux mix on your mixer. Monitoring could be done via a headphone output on the mixer or through the computer that is capturing the audio for live stream.
d. Separate Mixer Mix - Some digital mixers like the Behringer x32 have the ability to share all of the channels of the mixer with another mixer. For example, you can plug in 1 x32 to another x32 via the 2 AES50 ports on the back of each mixer. This gives the second x32 a copy of all of the channels, independent of the first mixer.
e. Live DAW Mixing - Live DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) mixing is similar to the previous method, however, instead of mixing on a second mixer, you would be mixing within a software program like Pro Tools. The advantage of this method is the power and versatility of software mixing. There are very high quality audio plugins made by companies like Waves, Slate Digital, Universal Audio, iZotope and more. With the x32, this is achieved by installing the Dante card

Super helpful! I really appreciate how you explain things in a way that isn't too packed full of terminology. Very down to earth for us who are beginners and need to understand how this stuff works!

Absolutely brilliant. Have been following the series and this episode, like the other prior episodes was brilliant. I can't wait for the next one. Being tasked with helping our church get firmly established in steaming I have certainly found these episodes and your other videos insightful; practical and rather helpful. Thanks so very much. May the King of Glory overwhelm you with much more of His goodness!

This is so awesome. Thank you so much pastor for this detailed walk-through. Just to add. Bethel now produces the template for other daws: Ableton, logic, reaper. A little question? For my church we use our ethernet connection for our internect connection in our livestream as our wifi is not too strong. How does that work with us if we go the dante route. We may not have the budget for a dante card right now but since we have the x32 we want to use our card out option to connect to our Livestreaming pc and get all 32 tracks into the bethel ableton/protools template for livestream but that will be too much cpu load on our livestreaming pc as Vmix takes a toll too. How do we come about this set up? Thanks for all you do for His Kingdom man. Grateful.

Very very very helpful. Could you help me understand how to “download the drivers” as you mention when using the audio interface to capture audio...?! I just set our church up for streaming today. And then quickly realized the audio from the board to the PC using the “mic in” jack was AWFUL. I ordered the audio interface you recommended. But am nervous about where to find the drivers you mentioned.

If you're using a Behringer UMC202 then you can download the ASIO4ALL driver by googling "ASIO4ALL download". The install is on the download page.

Thank you so much for your series, as we are trying to set up live streaming and none of us is very educated on this! I have a question: We have an Allen and Heath SQ5 which has the USB 2.0, so based on this video, we should be able to plug our mixer directly into our PC as it acts as the audio interface. That makes total sense. However, I then got lost during the next section where you talk about mixing the audio for the feed. If my mixer is already plugged directly into my PC, I'm not understanding what comes next. What am I plugging into what? I think due to our limited volunteers, the post fader aux mix would be what we'd do, but I'm not understanding how it is put together.

You're welcome Sherry! I'm glad I can help. For your mixer I believe you can do multiple ways of mixing. Without looking at the manual I am guessing you could grab your main LR mix/ a post fade mix/ pre fade mix or bring all the channels in from the USB. Which way are you wanting to mix or have the staff to mix? Do you have a person available to be a dedicated live stream mixer?

Such a great vid! So we’ve hit a major wall recently with audio mix. Initially we dedicated 2 buses on our X32 for our live stream mix. Those feeds are sent to our atem (l&r) then to an aja-utap and into wirecast on our iMac. The audio quality is decent, but that’s it. I recently connected my MacBook Pro (Logic Pro x) to our X32 using the usb digital output on the mixer. I have all 32 channels coming in, and I’m able to create a separate mix in logic with such a great waves plugins. It’s a night and day sound. Here’s the big issue now. How do I get that audio sound to either the atem or into wirecast? We cannot figure this out. We’ve tried using a few fire boxes as interfaces so that the MacBook and iMac talk to each other, but we get annoying, loud hum and buzz at times. Other times, the signal is so weak by the time it gets to wirecast. Anyhow, this is the wall we’ve hit. If we can get the logic, mastered mix into our live stream feed in wirecast, it would be a game changer in so many ways. Thanks for the help and pointers. 👊🏽😎

Question: you mentioned using the audio interface capability of digital boards as the best option. But you didn’t mention how that works? We have a Zoom L20, and it has an audio interface capability. We use Zoom (the video conferencing application - not to be confused with the brand of our soundboard!) for our virtual services and classes. I have the drivers for the soundboard downloaded onto our computer (laptop, but a powerful one) and when I plug the USB from the board into the computer, the L20 comes up as a mic option in Zoom. Buuuut no signal. I would love to be able to make the sound as good as possible! We have a conference we are doing soon that is mostly virtual, but the worship band will be live in our building playing for people gathered on Zoom, so if anyone can help with this it would be great!!

Question, I used a usb from my Yamaha mixer to my pc. When I play music from my computer to the mixer/speaker, I hear a screech scratching noise for about 5 seconds that over powers the music every couple minutes. Do you know why that happens? I decided to use red and yellow lines instead and plugged them into the 3.5 mm jack on computer. I’m not sure if it’s because the usb cannot take the sound cleanly from the computer to the mixer.
