Thanks man. It was excellent. It's a bit of a dark art so to have someone with your knowledge being willing to share is brilliant. I'd love to see one based on recording SP3 in Protools. But anything like this vid is a valuable resource. Subbed now after seeing this :)

OMG this is sp helpful. Just started using SD3 with my kit and constantly had to adjust levels in SD3 to make everything sound even, but now it's all done in my kit. This is invaluable.

Truly excellently done throughout! Really man, so good and seamlessly professional. You actually covered a lot of useful information in a short amount of time. This is a great resource you are providing and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. I've watched this as a replay, so thank you for keeping it available. I started watching Session 1 before I realized Session 3 was live streaming, but I want to watch them in order. By next week I will have watched the other sessions and will be able to join the stream live. Thanks you for doing this. Peace

So glad i discovered you today! This video was such a treat to watch and broke down more complicated concepts into simple terms. You are a hero for giving this information away for free with these videos. this info is certified GOLD nuggets. Just finished going through the whole thing, invaluable tips and tricks. You were able to simplify the pad settings in such an easy to understand way. Your setup and camera angle is absolute professional quality as well. Definitely gonna use a lot of what I learned here and apply these concepts to my Roland TD-11. I am learning how to record with multi channels through Superior Drummer 3 on Ableton on my Mac, and each day slowly starting to understand how they function more and more. What seemed super challenging and complicated has been simplified for me and its all thanks to this video. Thank you!

My apologies, the comments replay isn't working, I'll have to see why. I did capture the comments on my other computer and appreciate all the questions and feedback. A couple points of clarity...this first session was focused a lot on drum module settings, however the remaining three sessions will be all focused on Superior Drummer 3. I wanted to get the drum module discussion out of the way as this greatly impacts what you "feed" into Superior Drummer 3. That said, there were some questions/comments related to the curve settings in the Roland TD-30. Specifically around the Loud 1 and Loud 2 settings. Someone commented that this "gates" out lower velocities completely. It doesn't gate them in the sense that you eliminate trigger hits, but it does force lower velocities to be interpreted at a higher level. This provides more consistency at the expense of a bit less dynamic range. However, you can still manipulate this later in Superior Drummer 3 using the E-drum or Drum tab velocity curves. An alternative method may be to set all settings in the drum module to a "Linear" curve setting, then setup any velocity curves on a per instrument and per articulation basis for more control in the Edrum Settings within Superior Drummer 3, covered in the latter portion of this video. That's another way to get the exact velocity response you want with an even more detailed level of control. I'll briefly cover this in the next session to clarify before we dive into the Superior Drummer 3 related content.

You were my big inspiration in 2017 where i build my own e kit.. with SD3. One note for snare drum: positional sensing is the best, but if you want to eliminate any machine gunning, you need to dive into layers.. add 0 (endless) number of layers on the snare samples. And enable alternate samples for snare dum triggering.This will alternate between slightly different samples and the snare drum will sound SOOOO natural!

Great video! Thank you for all your effort in investing in your gear and making another helpful video. I just started with sd3 using a Roland td 10 kit to trigger. Working well except the HH no matter how I set it I can not get it to trigger correctly in sd3. So I’m still using the Roland sound for that which works but make recording editing a bit more difficult. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Looking forward to other videos.

Thanks a lot. Its for me the first time to see a all important settings in the drum-module. I use a TD-25 and I wonder about some respones from my toms and cymbals. I can't believe I am watching this amazing content only right now. Thanks for sharing this!! I am a TD-20 owner and use SD3 as well, but a never tried to setup my module before playing in SD. Maybe that's the reason I always struggled to get decent sensitivity while playing. To get worst, my drum module display is damaged and I can't navigate through it. I wonder if a new and modern drum module could solve this issue.

Fantastic job! By far, the most helpful content on edrums. One thing I'd note is that turning local control off isn't always a good idea. For instance, I set up a kit to trigger SD3 that's parked next to front of house at my church and outputting every SD3 channel signal to the sound console directly through DANTE. I also have a redundant stereo pair going directly from the module to the front of house in case something goes haywire. If local control is off, you lose the redundancy.

Found this after you’d streamed the session. Thank you so much for doing it. Just a brilliant learning aid. I hope you are still answering questions- because I have one that I’ve not been able to answer. I use a newer model Roland TD27 - but I’m using it with a collection of Roland pads I’ve amassed over years. Do you know if I select Roland TD27 in SD3 whether or not it maps from the drum module or assumes that all the pads are from the TD27 kit? In other words, if most of my pads come from a TD30 kit, should I select that module for a more accurate representation? Hope that makes sense?

Hi, great video, thank you 👍 question regarding the hi hats. Once you edit the points of opening and close in SD3, does this save and overwrite the original TD30 preset within the module so that every time you use the module after edit, this will have your saved settings etc? Make sense??? I am using ATV 14 hats and am having some issues with the hats on my TD30, so hence the question about editing the parameters. Hope you can help, thanks man!!! 👍👍👍

This content is crazy good! I’m saving up to buy quality edrums and sd3 and couldn’t be more happy that all of my future questions are already answered! One question: is it possible to save triggering presets in the module? Too have one jazz presets with lots of sensitivity and one for loud rock with less dynamic? Keep up the magic work! Greetings from Sweden :)
@DrumangleOfficial
@DrumangleOfficial 3 года назад
Thank you for the compliments! You can save global module mapping presets in the E-Drums page. See the Module Mapping section and also 46:50 of this live stream. You can also save user presets for each library, where you can have completely custom triggering presets (set by using the Learn function), so you can set presets in several places within Superior Drummer 3 to accommodate different performance situations.

I can honestly say for me, you're a God-Send. I have been struggling with EZDrummer1 and a Roland TD-20 to dial everything in for years. All the way through EZD2 and 3 and Superior Drummer 1, 2, and now 3. Finally it seems we have the tools to dial it in. Hardest thing was the VH-12 high hats, never did get those right, but now with SD3 I'm hopeful I can dial them in. I'm on vacation right now, but when I get home, I'm going to do a deep dive. So glad I stumbled across these videos. I can't thank you enough, I'm so appreciative. Keep 'em coming Bro'. I have so many questions, is it possible to communicate with you through email?

I have a TD-12 with a bad screen. Midi out into a Motu M-4, but still experiencing too much latency through my stereo monitors. OMG this was SO GOOD. I found out about this thru the Toontrack forum. This series of videos is what I've been needing for years so thank you for doing this and helping us bridge the gap between physical and virtual! I've been taking lots of notes and look forward to the next ones! Curious to know, what in ear monitors do you use for streaming and for LIVE performance? Are they custom molds? Also, your pedal looks gorgeous - what model is that? Side note--> Seems like there is an SD3 bug at 1:03:14 and 1:04:43. You played Center and the "Center" sensor didn't light up green. I wonder if they are aware of that issue.
@DrumangleOfficial
@DrumangleOfficial 3 года назад
Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed it!! So in this video I'm using Shure wired SE215's. These are single-driver in ear monitors and I don't have any ear molds. (I should get some, or some triple flange buds as they tend to stay in place better). I also have the gold Shure SE 535 triple-driver in-ears, but I'm not using them in these videos. As for my drum pedal, that's a DW 9000 single pedal I bought in 2012. It's the same one I used in my double strokes bass drum lesson on my channel. However, I since took it to a machine shop and had them machine lathe the footboard to make it completely smooth. I prefer this for less friction on the pedal. This isn't necessary but it is nice if you can find a place to have this done and trust them with a high quality pedal like this. I looked at the footage you mentioned and don't believe this is a bug in Superior Drummer 3. To me it just seems like the positional sensing interpretation of the drum module. The drum module is what's feeding Superior Drummer 3. Anyway, hope that answers the questions! Thanks again!

I think someone asked about using two hi-hat controllers. SD3 can do this. What I did was add my second hi-hat like I would any other extra instrument. Then in the MIDI Mappings for the new hi-hat scroll all the way to the bottom and you will see a mapping for Pedal CC Control. Map it to a CC that is not being used. Once mapped you can go to the MIDI In dialog and fine tune the Hi-hat pedal for the second hi-hat. Most modules only have one input for a hi-hat controller so you will have to provide for another controller input somehow.

Hello Craig, that question was mine. The TD-50 has my main hi hat and is showing as CC 4. I can see that the foot pedal I have input into the TD-20 that I want to use as my aux hat is showing CC 11. But the cymbal pad I have plugged into the TD-20 hi hat input isn't responding when the pedal is open or closed. It's still the same sound (open hat). So is there also any adjustment that is needed within my second module or within SD3. I guess the pad input must be set to either VH11 or VH12, correct?

How do I map for example the left crash with all it's articulation to an other cymbal. I just wanted to switch all attached midi notes to an cymbal in Sup3 i like. When I use the midi mapping I have to learn all articulation seperated. Is it possible to drag and drop from one cymbal to another? thx for the answer

Hi, fantastic drumming and drum skills !!!!, I had a lot fun watching this & super idea to Toontrack, this is exactly what we e-drummers using SP and MacBook need - a way we can get feedback to our questions, thank you 4 setting this up, this starts filling the gap. My question would be : could you maybe show the next session briefly how to achieve the "sit down and drum within a second" ? what I mean is : I got a similar setup as used, i.e. TD-12, Babyface Audio controller, MacBookAir. The problem for me is - when I put the Mac to PowerSaving, or switch power off when leaving the e-drum set and coming back the next day and open the McBook again, of course either the midi is not automatically re-connected again, or in Superior I have to close the app and restart it and select the preset again to correctly work. What I would love to have is a setup in which I open the MacBook, switch on TD-12 Power and I just can hit the e-drum and go playing, instead of first dealing 1-2 Minutes with reconnecting signals to SP3 and re-start the app. Maybe Luke has a perfect solution for the "sit down and drum" issue :-)) Thank you very much in advance.

Thank you for the compliments! Interesting question, I'll have to try this out. Honestly I always close down Superior Drummer 3 and shut off my drum module when I'm done playing. As soon as I turn my computer on and module on, then Superior Drummer 3, everything works with no need to reconfigure anything. I've never just left everything on and let my computer go to "sleep", so I may try that this week and see what happens. I'll let you know.

Outstanding video. I've seen many of yours when you just started out. When I build my next home studio I am going to use your setup as inspiration! I know technology changes radically each year but I'm sure the gear you are using like the video switcher won't go out of style anytime soon. One quick question regarding your metal cymbals - do you like Jobeky's or Field's better? And with these cymbals do you find they chew up your drumsticks in the same manner as acoustic cymbals and you get fine "stick sawdust" all over your mesh heads? Cheers my friend!

Thank you, appreciate it! I spent a lot of time researching everything I've decided to purchase and am very happy with how the studio has turned out. Glad I can be an inspiration! As for the cymbals, I definitely prefer the Jobeky cymbals. They're not as heavy and have a very nice balance to them, not to mention they look fantastic. They're actual metallic cymbals, so they'll chew up your sticks just like real cymbals over time, but I've had no issues with that regarding my mesh heads at all. I also took off the rubber rims on my Jobeky e-drums so it looks exactly like an acoustic kit. So "stick sawdust" is inevitable, but that hasn't been an issue at all for me.

@@DrumangleOfficial Ok awesome thanks for getting back! I haven't had a chance to catch up on Jobeky but do their newer metallic cymbals have anti-rotation stoppers (in particular the hi hats) or are they subject to spinning around like normal cymbals and you have to keep re-centering the playing area?

Great Session man! I look forward to the next and all future sessions! Can you spell out the brand of the drums and cymbal brand? I would like to research them and I couldn't really get the pronunciation on the live stream. Every way I typed in the search gave me no results. Thanks again!

Thank you and glad you liked it! The drums I use are Jobeky e-drums and cymbals. I have a full equipment list outlined on DrumAngle.com if you want more info. You can also check out my bio page on Jobeky's website.

I didn’t see the TD27 module on the list of choices. Did they update SD3 for that module?

Question: I am using a Simmons SD9K to trigger into Superior Drummer 3.I am using usb to a mac air as the midi connection. I have a Presonus Quantum Thunderbolt interface that I am using as well. Can you give me some advice on how to use this setup live without noticeable latency? How I currently have it setup is that I have routed the drums to multi-out. Then I routed out of the quantum using the line outs into a mixer for monitoring. With that being said there is about a 20 ms latency delay that my drummer is feeling. Is there anyway to fix this? Any help would be appreciated.

I have a large drum kit using two Roland TD-27 modules. I have EZDRUMMER 3 and Superior Drummer 3 downloaded on my laptop with an external SSD from Toontracks. I use Jobeky triggers and Roland cymbals. Issue for me is that SD3 doesn’t seem to want to connect to my kit. Local is set “off” on modules, and module setting on SD3 is for TD-27. Still. Nothing! Please help.
