thanks Kru Smuk 👍 Re-watch. "Na" is only used w/statement but never a question...but "na" can also be used w/ a request: "bpai duu nang gap chan na" - (you want) go watch a movie with me...bit confusing because this sounds/seems very close to a question(?)...So "na" can be used w/ a "request" - not a question, because a "request" is less direct, more of a polite plea/ ข้ออ้างคำร้องขอ ?

สวัสดีคะ I can also hear/ read some sentences using "wa" inside the sentence. I mean not at the end of the sentence. Like : I think that... ( Chãn kid wa...) Something like this. I also want to ask about the "loei" particle. I really cant get over with that "loei". 😂 I hear it always. ขอบคุณคะ
@axelcarlisle
@axelcarlisle 2 года назад
Waa inside the sentence is different from wa. It essentially means “that.” Example: ฉันคิดว่าคุณใจดี Chan kit waa khun jai dee” means “I think that you are good.” Chan = I (for ladies), kit = think, waa = that, khun = you, jai dee = kind. Another example: ฉันรู้ว่าคุณกินข้าวเย็นแล้ว Chan ruu waa khun gin khao yen laew = I know that you already ate dinner.

Kru Smok, Could you give a more nuanced description of what you mean by 'politeness' when using 'kha' and 'khrab'? Why I ask... I've been traveling back and v forth between US and Thailand for over 2 years now trying to learn Thai here and there. I've gotten what I imagine to be a fair decent intuition about when to use 'khrab' but still don't get what it really conveys When bilingual Thai refer to its use as 'politeness' it doesn't vibe with what is actually meant by 'politeness' in English. To native English speakers, politeness is a formality to keep things calm that inevitably creates a barrier to emotional intimacy. I've had Thai women say to me 'chan rak khun kha', often after I initially said 'phom rak khun'. A native English speaker would NEVER even think about trying to modify a phrase like 'I love you' to make it 'polite', as the formality of being 'polite' is actually contradictory to such a raw emotional declaration. So please do clarify what Thai specifically mean when they use the English word 'polite'. Thanks!
@subhash1691
@subhash1691 4 года назад
What my understanding is there are words for politeness because Thai is a tonal language.. You cannot show the politeness simply by low tones in whole sentence..
@BananaThaiSchool
@BananaThaiSchool 4 года назад
@@subhash1691 Actually you also made a very good point on Thai as tonal language!
@BananaThaiSchool
@BananaThaiSchool 4 года назад
Hi Matt, sorry for the late reply, I think the politeness of ค่ะ kha and ครับ khrab is rooted in the Thai culture. Personally, I think there are actually few kinds of politeness. 1. being respectful for seniors, older people, boss, and anyone you respect like parents. 2. keeping it formal for strangers 3. being sweet, soft and polite Honestly, if you use the soft tone to talk to someone, it's already nice and polite but when you use the polite particles kha/khrab, it's even more polite as the word shows politeness. We say it without thinking. It's our consciousness. To conclude, I always recommend my students to say kha/khrab. There is no harm but the only good thing about them. Hope my explanation helps
@mattdouglas1050
@mattdouglas1050 4 года назад
@@BananaThaiSchool would it be then accurate to say that when Thai use the English word 'polite' that you could simply use 'nice' or 'kind' in it's place.?
@Jumpoable
@Jumpoable 2 года назад
@@mattdouglas1050 NO, khrab/ kha denotes RESPECT. A native Thai speaker would NEVER even not think of hierarchy or opportunities to sound extra polite when speaking Thai. Better get used to a more sophisticated worldview than the American one when you're out of your country.
