In this video, you'll watch MedCircle host Kyle Kittleson experience a live therapy session with Dr. Ramani Durvasula. This is the MedCircle WITH ME RU-vid Series Part 2.
In case you missed the rest of this series...
PART 1: • Watch a Live Hypnosis ...
PART 3: • Taking a Personality T...
PART 4: • Live Psychiatric Med C...
Mental health is often misunderstood; and therapy may be even more stigmatized than mental illness. So Kyle and leading psychologist Dr. Ramani Durvasula show you what a live therapy session looks like.
Kyle's mental health history:
Kyle has been dealing with depression since the age of 8. He has undergone cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with a past therapist. Lately, he has also been dealing with anxiety. In this discussion, he'll share why.
Psychotherapy may be an effective treatment option for you and any mental health issues you may be facing. It can help you manage your emotions, change your behavior, and get motivated to use self care strategies at home.
However, not all therapy looks the same. Go to MedCircle.com to watch comprehensive video series on all types of therapy including dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), somatic experiencing (SE) therapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, and much more.

MedCircle Definitely watch a lot of comedians on RU-vid. :) More broadly, I learned to listen to my body and accept what’s going on for me in the moment. In Metta practice there is a saying, there is no one in the universe more deserving of your love and kindness, than you yourself. That has to be thing number one. Make sure your oxygen is flowing before helping other passengers. ☮️

I read books I really enjoy and give myself permission to put one down that doesn’t feel good in anyway. I don’t try to talk myself into it, which feels really good as well.

Swimming is an excellent antidote to anxiety and depression - diving into cold water forces your awareness into the present moment and into your entire body. If I can get myself to the ocean for a swim I can always shift a mood, a shower is the next best thing. I also feel that my intuition works really well around water.

I heard someone say that cold water can help because you're doing a real world experience that physically raises your heart rate and internal energy and then when you leave the water the energy and heart rate goes down. Sort of like you're matching the anxious energy to a real world bodily reaction and then when you leave the water and warm up the anxiousness also goes down.

U either know your stuff or have good intuition. Water is the emotional element, so mastering and gaining control over your mobility in water will translate to better emotional control and mobility. Also if you cleanse the waters of your body this will be analogous to you cleansing your emotions, like going on a fast or cleanse

Powerful...”can you be ok with not being ok?”. One of my ways to take care of myself is to ‘being ok to not be ok’ plus many other combinations of things like music, health care (healthy food and exercise), art therapy, playing ukulele, essential oils, connection to friends and family, funny videos, cat and puppy pictures and videos. Acceptance!!!! Powerful! It’s ok to not be ok with viewing the harm of animals, because it’s not ok to harm animals. ❤️

I relate 100% to what Kyle said about animal welfare! My background was in animal care as well and I can't handle pain of animals and feel guilty when I play "ignorant" but if I get more into it I just cry like, all day. But feel like I need to see and get involved with these things to be able to do something about it.

I am a Stage 3 Cancer survivor and didn't have the anxiety during my treatments that I have now. Part of is was because I had so many free supports and felt part of a community. I don't have those supports now and I am very isolated. The other part is that Cancer is concrete. I knew what I was facing. Yes, at the time it was made clear I could die. They weren't sure if the cancer had spread or if the treatments would work. But I felt I was going to give it my best. I was in survival mode. Fighting something concrete. But the future during a pandemic is uncertain. Housing market is strange, stocks are supposedly up but for how long, etc. My anxiety is over the unknown. I also don't have access to my friends and family so the lack of connection is affecting me. The other thing is that I NEVER suffered from the depression I do now when I lived in a developing country. My daily struggles were real. Every day was a struggle but there were real. Also, my expectations were low. Comforts weren't available. Period the end. But I had sooo much community and the culture encouraged us to care for one another. I don't have that here in Vancouver, BC Canada. North American expectations are high yet we are encouraged to do it alone. To be an Island. To shoot for money, money, money at the expense of our emotional health. Even mental health is unachievable for someone who needs treatment but does have money. And that is the biggest, most important support most can have.

It was interesting to watch the natural resistance to committing to or embracing what the therapist is suggesting and presenting. Can so relate. It speaks to your relationship the trust it takes to rise above this and just try to imagine what the therapist is offering could actually apply to you. Such a stretch moment.

I am working through it (not often successfully) and I hope you find your way. I also deal with anxiety but have been off meds for more than a decade now - a big part of it I attribute to my yoga practice.

It was also such a celebration to see that your zoom was almost as bad as mine is with the cutting in and out. Thank you so much for sharing. I don’t relate necessarily with the animal thing but the way it makes you feel, I completely relate like 1:1. Me and my mom have a terrible relationship and now i’m back at home with her. I put a lot of pressure on myself (and her) that we need to have a great relationship because that’s how it’s supposed to be and when she starts telling me to do things a certain way that she likes, she doesn’t get that I have found my own way of doing it that I like. And it really stresses me out to have to explain that to her because she feels like i’m pushing her away and it just turns into this huge argument and so every time a thought of my relationship with her comes up I just get anxious for no reason. This helped a lot. Now i see that I don’t HAVE to have a great relationship with her. She’s a person. Just a regular person. I can’t be best friends with everyone. So just knowing that already relieves a lot of pressure off of me. Sorry I just noticed how long this got and i’m venting lol but hopefully people can relate. Anyways but what also gives me anxiety is knowing that family members are gonna judge me for not wanting to try so hard to have a good relationship with her. So that can be pretty unsettling and i don’t know how I can work on that. If you read this whole thing and have some kind words for me i’d appreciate it 🥺

madeinjosh thank you for sharing all you did. It was both brave and helpful. I’m maybe that kind of mother to my 13 year old son and I desperately want to change because I’m afraid I’ll lose him - and seeing what you say - maybe fairly so. I try to control him because I’m scared for him. Scared he’ll make the wrong decisions and end up hurt in life which terrifies me and breaks my heart. He’s so important to me. I know that isn’t the right thing to do, but it’s my own anxiety and life that isn’t under control. I want him to be a certain way so people won’t hurt him in life. It feels like panic building in me now - both the unknowns for him and the pushing him away from me by constantly correcting him. You know, no matter what he does “wrong”, I ultimately blame myself for it - like I couldn’t figure out a way to show him better. I couldn’t be a better mother, couldn’t get my own life together and ease up on him. This video showed me how to start backing up and thinking about how I can give myself a break if We get things wrong. And you’ve shown me how he’ll be ok on his own and that there’s a chance we can be ok later in life if I start working now. Thank you and I hope you find a more peaceful place one day with your mom. And now we know, it’s ok to let it be ok if you don’t.

Try not to be so hard on yourself. I learned to " break my thoughts down". I hadn't heard of this. Have you?

It’s not easy at all. I hope you get to somehow. I call in for my adult daughter and with her. It’s kind of exposure therapy right now, exposure to trying to continue the good and hard work she’s being doing with her therapist online instead of in person. It’s not ideal but it’s something. This too will pass. Try not to put your own self care on pause because of the pandemic. Take care of you! You’re important!

Self care is very important. Doing the little things that keep one fit; eating at proper times, having a good morning routine, doing some exercise or working out to attain mental clarity. Keeping some time to rest. Not allowing more negative stimulation like watching fearful movies instead of comedy or family content. Making an effort to purposefully and intentionally stay in a positive mind set inspite of not being able to step out due to the pandemic. Yes practicing mindfulness that is so vital in the present situation to keep one in positive vibrations. Helping out in the house work and trying to be kind to yourself and to others at home.🙏

Sending you a big warm hug Kyle, allowing yourself to sé been seen in SM being so vulnerable. Your in the care of the Queen of physiology, herself, the highly esteemed dr Ramini. You are not alone, i was in & out of those anxiety States yesterday, I do try the snap band on my wrist, I breathe, I visited an old school buddy I hadn't seen for years & I know my conversation was one long rant, started ruminating & I had to have learned it from dr Ramini, I was able to say out long "just forget about it and let it go, and I did, I also added I don't care what I said. Freedom at last, hopefully I will continue to be able to cope with my anxiety or that inner critic. It's become unplugged. Good luck. PS. You are soo very handsome close up. Be happy Kyle. I refuse to watch anything violent. Also Jon Kabbit Zinn does a brilliant body scan, I go to sleep every single night listening to it, I park my phone 3 feet behind me on a pillow. Hope it works for you 🙏

So helpful l in the world of anxiety . I am going to apply this with my journey in supporting daughter who is in a trauma bond with her narcissist spouse . and my connection with Kyle emotions is my love for animals and therefor I view rescuing of animals that have a happy ending. And of course hoping for a rescue plan for my daughter.,who has been affected in all aspects of her life.. Do not know what its going to take for my daughter to know there is hope for her healing and a better life...The anxiety that our family is going through in watching the affects pf her spousal abuse has been devastating .I have gained so much knowledge in the application of redeeming oneself . I like the term redemption for some reason ,t seems to fit for me

im so grateful for this sesiones I learn so much with every one I watch, what Kile is commenting on about animal abuse, is so relatable I had that same experience when I went vegan and I got into animal advocacy, and I swear those videos ge talks about, man it's tough! to see the evil that humans are capable of, finally it came to a point where I stopped watching or subscribing to anything that shows that for my mental health, I felt not only anxious and sad, but also was losing hope for humankind..

I had a similar situation too. I began to notice that I often felt sorry for childrens. For example, if I saw a child (12-14 years old) without parents or poorly dressed, I would literally start crying, wondering where his parents were, whether this child was living in a good family, etc. Later I was diagnosed with depression and clinical anxiety. That's when I realised what it was all about, because a couple of years ago I wouldn't have even paid attention to such things

Why Kyle is struggling with meditating is the approach to meditation. Meditation is not about trying to focus on anything. It is about being with phenomena of thoughts, emotions, external stimuli without judging it, without forcing yourself to “get back on track and focus on meditating” Sometimes guided meditations where they have us focus on imagining and visualizing is not always what we need. For sleep perhaps try a body scan meditation. It’s difficult to calm the mind when the body is still holding tension. Instead of thinking “Oh no I’m thinking about work again” it’s more about observing the thoughts you’re having about work and not trying to shove them away because what you resist persists. The more energy you put towards resisting or getting rid of the thoughts, the more it will persist. Allow those thoughts to exist, but don’t entertain them , or believe them. They just simply exist. That’s all. And once you acknowledge the thoughts gently, they will dissipate. Meditation is getting in touch with the inner observer. Neutral approach. If you pressure yourself to meditate, or do it perfectly, it won’t happen. You will improve with practice like all things. Try gentler with yourself.

Love watching you two… and wanted to tell you Kyle that you are not alone in what you expressed re animal welfare… I have been doing pet rescue & fostering for over 20 yrs. Yet I still get upset when I see or hear anything about puppy mills, pet neglect & abuse.. (FYI- I did not look at that show you referenced either.. same reasons as you). I almost quit rescue one time because I felt that I just could not take the emotional impact any longer. But then I knew there would be one less person looking out for them. I don’t think there is anything wrong with how you feel. I had to accept that about myself as well. God created us with a heart for animals ❤️ probably because He knew there would be evil in this world and that animals would need caring ppl to look out for them…. Keep up the great work and do not change who you are! God be with you snd Dr Romani 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
