Well, there for a while you were being ask about what goes on as far as different sound patients make when they die. If it is normal to hear, different sounds can be scary. But my father when he was in the last stage of dieing he mad a sound that sounded like a growl only once, but load. I was wondering if that sound is normal?

I was on Hospice 13 yrs ago. I had everything you mentioned in this video. Im on Lactulose to this day and Xifaxin now, I had a "Denver Drain" and had over 17 liters drained from my abdomen. I did stop drinking when I was put on Hospice. 13 yrs sober in November. The drain was removed when I was taken off Hospice because I was getting better. My mama, who I lost 14 yrs ago came to me and told me "God's not ready for you yet". God gave me a second chance at life and I thank him and my Amazing Hospice Nurse, Katosha. I'll never forget her. I'm now a "Granny of 2 amazing grand daughters. I know God kept me here for a reason. I use to be scared but I no longer am. I just pray that God lets me stay around long enough to see those grand kids grow up.

My dad passed in 2019 from alcoholic cirrhosis. It was not easy watching him suffer. I was 33. Only child. I miss him and love him so so much. Ashley, That's the hope we hold in our hearts. Our faith. YES. We will see them again. The tears and pain will be long gone. THE loss Is there for life. It takes time to dilute that heartstabbing pain. I get by by forcing my mind to remember the laughter, All of those precious memories in our our heart. If my mind starts thinking of the end and loss , the pain. I flip the switch. Ok turning that light off going into the other room full of bright lights, happy memories. No pain. No bad thins we saw, felt and can't change. That special Birthday or Christmas. The laughter. Bless you .

My mom passed in March this year 🥺 Long story short, after she passed her funeral was nearly 30 days later. At the funeral her assigned nurse was the first one to get up and talk about my mom. Great video! I had end stage liver disease caused primarily by undiagnosed hemochromatosis and alpha -1 Antitrypsin Deficiency. I had all of those symptoms you discussed except ascites. But the jaundice and itching was bad. Lactulose was nasty stuff. After two bouts with sepsis and the discovery of a hepatocellular carcinoma, I was placed on the transplant list. Less than a month later, after two false alarms, I got a new liver. That was 2 years ago, and I’m doing extremely well. Incidentally, I volunteer with hospice. I was blessed with a second chance at life, and feel compelled to serve in this manner. Thanks again for the videos. Short, concise, and to the point. By the way, I would like to see a video about what you feel you need most from your volunteers. Dos and don’t?? I witnessed my grandfather die from Liver cancer(the result of alcoholic cirrhosis) and it was the worse thing I have ever seen. Apparently he had Esophageal Varicies so he had 2 episodes of massive hemorrhaging from his mouth before he finally, mercifully died. He was at home, on home health/hospice care. When the bleeding started we were tried to call the Agency, but they never answered the phone (after hours?). So my mother, sister and I had to manage these terrible events by ourselves, with towels. We turned him on his side and I held a tupperware bowl to his mouth. He was fully conscious and very terrified, crying help me, help me. We tried to be calm and told him he was ok and that he was just feeling a little sick. The nurse only came once a day to take his vitals, check his catheter, bathe him, and tell us how long she thought he had. We were completely on our own. She came after he died, completely unaware that he had passed. He had already been taken to the funeral home. This happened in 1995. I hope that hospice care has improved since then because I think that my mother, sister, and I have PTSD are going through this horrific event.

Ascites is the worst. I watched my husband deal with it in 2021. He had the drainage procedure paracentesis several times, they extracted the hospital's maximum of five liters each time. He got huge temporary relief from it, before the fluid started collecting again. I remember rubbing lotion on his belly when the swelling got big, because the skin gets stretched so taught like a drum, the moisturizing helps with discomfort, a little bit. God it was rough near the end. I empathize with anyone going through this with their loved one

In between those days, a young man I knew who just came out of rehab for alcohol, died. He had massive stomach pains. Especially having the implanted drain put in before going into hospice as some hospice companies kick you off hospice if you go into the hospital, even if it's for a procedure that makes hospice more tolerable. @terrijsm don't be afraid! Just take care of your liver. I'm on Methotrexate and a bio similar to Remicade called inflectra. Let me tell you that I went undiagnosed for 2 years. I could barely walk, could not open lids that had already been opened, could not reach up in cupboards, and even had to crawl upstairs. Once diagnosed and medicated properly, the pain diminished so much. I had to relearn how to walk properly because, due to favoring one foot over another for the 2 years prior, my tendons had shortened. I've been on this combo of drugs for 4 years now, and I've been declared on medical remission! There's hope! Take the meds. The doctor will monitor your liver through blood tests. Just make sure the doctor prescribes folic acid and take B complex because the meds seem to draw those nutrients out of our bodies.

Thank you Nurse Julie for this informative video. I have metastatic breast cancer spread to my liver 4-1/2 years ago. I’ve been on oral chemotherapy since I was diagnosed. The cancer mutated recently, so I was changed to another type of oral chemo, which has harsher side effects. I’m grateful to currently feel well with all things considered. My blood work was perfect today! This video was a huge blessing when I discovered it. I’m a positive and optimistic person who believes knowledge is power. This video brings me comfort to know what to expect when I approach end stage liver disease. Now, I am prepared with knowledge to make my final days more comfortable and without fear of the unknown. My oncologist doesn’t want to talk with me about what to expect at the of my life. I am extremely grateful to have found this video. I’ve saved and downloaded it. My mother died of this at 55 a couple years ago now. She was an alcoholic had liver damage but hadn’t drank for about 20 years. In 2020 she had an operation on her foot which got infected. This resulted in her not being able to stand up at my house so had to call an ambulance, she went into hospital that night then went into a coma then when in the coma had a seizure that the hospital couldn’t get under control. She was in a coma for a week then transferred to palliative care. I stayed with her pretty much 24/7 in palliative, she did regain consciousness but could never really talk, she did start to recover in my opinion, but had hepatic encephalopathy. One night I woke up to her having a seizure which lasted for 3 hours the hospital couldn’t get the seizure under control, she never regained consciousness after that and died a week later. I think more awareness of the seizure side needs to be made, it was a really horrible thing to witness, and to not being able to do anything to help. To me it seemed she was aware of what was happening and she looked scared.

My husband recently passed away from Wilson's disease. He had cirrhosis due to Wilson's disease. 4 years of suffering, I don't wish this on anyone. He was pitiful. When we came to find out what he had, his esophagus ruptured, not many people live through that, he was in a coma for a month. He lived 4 years after. He was unable to get a doner liver because his other organs had been compromised. At the end, I was the only one taking care of him, his mind was starting to get bad and I was the only one he would let take care of him. I know not every situation is the same, and I hope I'm not scaring anyone, but I wish there was more education on Wilson's disease. I will forever be torchered, he passed very quick, I was dressing him, he laid back in my arms and he was gone, that fast. He bled out from his mouth and nose. And that will always be what I see in my mind. Today would have been his 58th birthday..I'm a widow at 45. Thank you for the education that you give Nurse Julie, I think you are awesome.

They gave him 3 months to live, he did chemo and two clinical trials and lived for 16 months. They were not easy months and his death wasn't easy either. My wife had pancreatic cancer, which spread to the liver. This was 2002, and being given 3 months and lasted 10+…after her 2nd paracentesis, she mentioned once to me “I could murder a Bacardi & coke”. Instead, I pressed her dilaudid button, and the subject never came up again. Also: The hospice nurse refused to come out the night she died, because the roads were icy. I called the state police, they offered to drive her. Again, she refused. As I was preparing her Thorazine @ 4:30 am, her breathing began to get erratic, and by 4:35, she passed in my arms. No tears, just relief. However, I made sure the hospice nurse who promised her earlier that year that she’d be there “No matter what”, was fired. And 6 months later, the county coroner came by to lobby for her job. I went to where they were going to have a judge re-instate her, and gave testimony. She was not re-hired….My reasoning being I was able to handle it alone, but would the next people she bailed out on be able to? And she never said 2 words to me, or apologized, or disputed the facts. That small county needed a hospice nurse, and they finally hired a REAL one.

Hello Julie, you are such an amazing help and have brought such comfort. My mom is in hospice for Alzheimer's Dementia. She checks all of the boxes in your video that explained the end stages of that disease. However, I viewed this one because she is extremely jaundiced and had abdominal swelling. She was prescribed Lasix which she is still on. She is steadily losing weight and we just do our best to keep her comfortable at home. She is still eating (pureed foods and Ensure/Boost) and always wants lots of water (diabetes surfaced as well). I'm not sure what brought on her "sudden" liver issues. Her bloodwork was not good but not the worst. One of the nurses mentioned that some people have much higher bilirubin levels but don't always present as yellow as my mom is presenting. Is this just a part of the overall breakdown of the body?

Thank you Julie for this . As I wrote you previously my 82 yr old mother ( non alcoholic) is stage 4 liver cancer . As a continuation to this can you explain further what this means .. *She sleeps most of the day *She is lucid and has good conversations But moments later she seems to be in another world .. she stares into oblivion and stays there for long periods Pray tell what your experience is with this ? Thank-you greatly for your videos you are truly a Gift 🎁 💝

I have cholangiocarcinoma stage 4 that has spread to my liver. I already have 2 external biliary drains and I have paracentesis done regularly. I'm not at the hospice stage yet but your videos are very informative

Thank you, I'm only 44 but I have Lupus and it gave me NASH from fatty liver and I am end stage now. I have a 19 year old and I don't know how to explain this to him. I also wondered how I feel etc but my 5 specialists had ZERO information for me.

Thanks Julie, This is great info. I am NAFLD 3-4 and have been scared s**t less about eventually ending up in hospital debilitated and in pain. This video gives me a lot of encouragement. Thanks for demystifying all this about death, dying and what might be “out there”. My greetings from Sydney.

My father's non-alcholic end stage liver disease was diagnosed the week after he had moved into assisted living in his 90s. His only symptom was ascites and general unwellness that developed over several weeks as we prepared for the move. Two medical opinions estimated he would live only 6 more months. While he was in hospital, we agreed to have a permanent drain installed, begin hospice, and discharge him into nursing home care (I lived in another state, and moving to my home would have been difficult for him and reduced the level of his care, but I visited him frequently). Having the drain in place permitted him greater comfort. The hospice organization and nursing facility had a cooperative relationship at both the organizational and individuals level. The unusual aspects are that he lived 18 months and that he never showed marked jaundice, with barely a tinge even near the end of his life. The diagnosis, based on biopsy, was supported by all the other usual symptoms.

Every case is different, of course, but my father who was in end stage NA liver disease had no lasting pain other than the discomfort from ascites at first. We agreed to have the permanent drain installed, which allowed drainage more frequently and simply. As his condition worsened, there was medication to relieve pain that did not sedate him. He did become increasingly confused and not of sound mind, due to the disease progression and his advanced years, but he did not hurt. He entered his end of life stage and passed away peacefully.

My mil after vax and boaster got a turbo cancer where one evening she started to complain about pain in her arm and she unveiled her lower arm it was swollen like a sausage. By the time she was transported to the hospital the tumor inside her bone had exploded her bone. She had surgery to repair that bone but shortly after the cancer metastasized to other parts of her bones mostly the spine and it finally got into her liver. She’s still alive but her doctor said he was some kind of miracle! It’s so hard watching your family member succumb!

My mother in law died of liver disease. The hospice nurse didn't help manage her pain at all. We had to give😢 her morphine for the pain. Her last day she was crying out in pain. Her live in wouldn't tell us where her pain medication was, he wouldn't call the nurse, so in all fairness there wasn't much the nurse could do if she didn't know. It was the most horrible death ive seen to date. What should or could we have done for her?😢

The aide sold the morphine? U could have called the police on the side withholding her meds and then stayed there urself to care for her

I have two siblings w alcoholic cirrhosis. My oldest sister and oldest brother. My brother just had a transplant a week ago and is doing great! He's been sober a year before that. My sister is limping along and refuses transplant. I'm the youngest of 4, all my siblings are alcoholics, my parents were also. Please educate everyone you can about how toxic alcohol is. I've seen my siblings turn glowing yellow, get tapped for ascites multiple times, bleed out of their nose and eyes, my sis had an aneurysm. Low platlets. ICU multiple times. And nevermind the HE when they act completely insane or aggressive. This disease will break your heart in ways you didn't know were possible.

I would say this to for end stage liver disease from alcohol if they are big time drinkers suddenly stopping can bring on withdrawls and DTs so if they want to stop the hospice team needs to be aware of it.

My sister died of liver failure, auto immune hepatitis. She had to get drained so many times over the last year of her life. And they never put in a permanent drain and I don’t know why. The last six months of her life she was seen at the mayo clinic. Do you think they would’ve put in a drain there at least. But they didn’t.

I am curious have you had any patients with angiosarcoma? My mom was just diagnosed 89 years old, just went on hospice. It seems several of her drs have been mesmerized by her case because its so rare. It came from radiation treatment of breast cancer 19 years ago.
