When Liverpool and Everton were the two powerhouses of the game. both were fantastic in the 80s. 1989 was a fitting tribute to the Hillsborough victims highlighted the togetherness and spirit on Merseyside even in the aftermath of the suns bullshit story. fair play to both clubs
What a final it was. Remember watching it as a kid and it was just meant to be to win the FA cup after the tragedy. What a heart-wrenching final but Rushie had to score 2 to win it.
Agreat but sad watch in 2020, RIP to every football fan that has died at a football match especially at Hillsbrough, Ibrox, Heysel, Burnden Park and Valley Parade amongst many others.
I remember this March because Liverpool come together on the streets to Whatch red and blue side by side , food and drinks they were the best days off my life when ur a 12 year old kid with no worries in the world 🌎 pure class and I wish I was there again xxxxx
How good was that 3rd Liverpool goal. Almost every player got a touch in build up. Playing out from the back. Triangles passing getting out of trouble and switching play. What a great move
The 80s were a great time for Liverpool. Irregardless of who you supported, when the Tories and Thatcher were destroying the country, seeing the two Merseyside Clubs at their best was a great sight
Everton, the OG rival to Liverpool especially in a late 70s to 80s. If we ignore the trophy and just look at point goal record of all time league on both team, Everton & LFC are still tight despite Everton are so underarchiver now. I hope Everton will be back to its glory for catching up their legacy. Very underrated club, beside Aston Villa
Shame on the few nobheads that shouted out. Other than that, beautiful minutes silence. God bless those 97, and all those impacted by that awful tragedy. Football should be an escape from lifes problems, not where you go to lose your life. From a United fan🙏
There wasn't the same squad rotation then, and the decision was made that Rush & Beardsley was the first choice pair up front. From the club's point of view, the money offered by Real Sociedad was too good to turn down for a player not playing regularly and about to turn 31. From Aldridge's point of view, he wanted to be playing regularly. With hindsight, Beardsley missed quite a lot of games that season so Barnes played up front a lot, meaning Aldridge might have played if he'd stayed. Liverpool spent most of the money from the Aldridge sale on Ronny Rosenthal who, although he had a vital immediate impact, wasn't as good a player.
@@DaveWallerLFC Still hurt me to see Aldo go though even though he was getting on..He was still razor sharp in front of goal and when he left Real Sociedad i was praying that we bought him back but he instead went to Tranmere..The understanding that Aldo, Barnes & Beardsley had was absolute dynamite and one of the most vivid football memories of my childhood
Nicol's quality on his 'wrong' foot was unreal. So underrated. Even Everton stood off him before he crossed unchallenged for Rushie's first. Big mistake
The FA Cup used to be MASSIVE... Hours of build up on TV..Road to Wembley etc... Absolute shame what's happened to it over the years..The only way to save it is to give a UCL spot as incentive to potential winners but that won't happen
The finishing from Rush was outstanding for the third goal. I don't think he ever got credit for such intelligence in his football skills. Oh for an Aldridge/Rush partnership in the prem era. Great cup final this was.
Aldridge and Rush did partner each other quite a bit 88-90, but it wasn't a natural blend. Both were better playing alongside Beardsley, who tended to play deeper and feed passes through to them, while drawing defenders out of the area to make space. Aldridge & Rush by contrast tended to make similar runs and rather got in each other's way, while there was no 'pully' between midfield and attack. See some of the drab performances on the way to the title in 89-90, when A & R were playing together. Despite becoming champions again that year, the rhythm and cohesion of the Liverpool attack was not quite what it was when either of them partnered Beardsley.
Both teams Liverpool and Everton players and supporters were a credit to Merseyside. Fantastic atmosphere and a great match that unfortunately did not go in Everton’s favour. Trevor Steven had a solid game, Big Nev despite conceding three times had an otherwise good game as he kept us in the match. McCall was excellent, Sharp and Cottee did not play as well as I would have hoped. My favourite player in general was Kevin Sheedy.
Steven was shite mate, like Sharp went missing in another cup final, pissed myself laughing when commentator suggested we had the psychological advantage ha ha ha as if we NEVER have had over these spawney bastards, motson was a shite commentator, should have kept Coleman.
What a poignant moment as Merseyside stood side by side to show respect to the memory of every liverpool fan lost in the tragic Hillsborough disaster! Silence was deafening in its absolute ness! impeccably honoured minutes silence, emotional!
Everton totally switched off from start to finish in the move that led to Liverpool's 3rd....Then again not surprising. Very warm day....And they looked spent in extra time.
It was embarrassing watching ratciffe against Liverpool, they loved playing against him, stand next to him roll of him guarenteed goals, check out rushs goals against him/Everton,he had an absolute nightmare this match and the 86 final Liverpool murdered us in this match.
Souness had to repair a worn out side and an unrealistic set of expectations from a fan base used to winning. However, his interview and photo session with The Sun would ultimately prove fatal. Although it was not done with malice, it was a mistake to do.
I'm a Liverpool fan and i was 11 years old when i watched this in 1989 ....in my view? ..hooligism and tragedies on the terraces had blighted English football in the 1980s... Come the 1990s something had to change. And it did.. It came in the creation of the FA premiership, and the UEFA champions league in that very same year of 1992
Awe, lucky you's who were @ this Wembley Beauty (envious tbf). Everton's Defence seemed to just have a 'bad day on the pitch' eg: Kev' Ratcliffe + Liverpool missed a fair few (& so did Everton) though Rush grabbed 1 on return, but can't believe his fellow International compadre/Van Den Hauwe only got 13 Caps!!
What a bizarre comment about the amount of finals that had supposedly become the norm at that time. There'd been three that decade but 86,87 and 89 had all got either 4 or 5 goals in them
The team was questioning if it was right to play, but in the end it was such a huge tribute victory to the 96 just over a month after the greatest tragedy in English football. Even if the magnitude of the occasion was so great that it's forgivable, like John Barnes later described, it still somehow is awful to see that many fans invading the pitch again and again. However incited you were, that was not the moment to lose your head. It shows absolutely no respect or mindful reflection, only why there were high fences at many stadiums. The players obviously didn't appreciate it, and fans don't invade pitches anymore. I wonder what they think about watching themselves run around like mad men so many years after. It should be embarrassing at best.
The more i see of Bruce Grobelar the more i think he was as bogey as a 3 pound note. That last min Everton goal he gifted to them. And so many goals its the same thing. There's a bad smell around old Bruce for sure.
Strangely, Bob Paisley, Joe Fagan and Kenny Dalglish came to a different conclusion and made him first choice goalkeeper in teams that won everything. But maybe you know better than them?
Watching this reminds me of just how weak a link Grobelaar was, his stupidity was a constant reason for creating instability. Had we had Southall, I'm sure we would have won much more and with better scorelines......
This seems a bit over the top. Southall was probably the best keeper in the world at this time, but Grobbelaar was also a good keeper. His style of play - coming well out of his goal to catch crosses and out of his area to act as sweeper behind a back 4 that pushed up to play offside - was intended to prevent problems before they arose. It wasn't stupidity. He obviously made mistakes, but Paisley, Fagan and Dalglish thought he was good enough.
You are a fool. Although Bruce Grobelaar made mistakes he was one of the best goalkeepers in the world for 15 years. Neville Southall was the best, most consistent goalkeeper in football history. I'm a lifelong Liverpool fan . YNWA ⚽🇮🇪.
McCalls offside under the offside rules of the day. Ref and Linesman missed that. Glad Pat Nevin never got his medal he was a wee rat. And to top it off Celtic stopped the deidco winning a treble that day. it was a great day watching the football back then.
Nicol is goalside of McCall at all times for the goal that made it 1-1, so I don't think McCall could be offside. If you meant the player on the line (Cottee?) who jumps over the shot, I think it would be harsh to disallow the goal for that under any interpretation, but I suppose in theory he is in an offside position.
